Prepare to be ‘wowed’ at the Whittlesey Festival this year, on Sunday September 6th. Amongst the fun and excitement of the day, you will be treated to a nostalgic World War II ‘Dakota’ aircraft flypast. The ‘Dakota’ was the most numerous transport aircraft of the war, with over 1,900 aircraft eventually being supplied to the RAF, as they served in all areas of operation. On D-Day, they dropped some of the Parachute Brigade in Normandy and were also used as freighters, air ambulances and personnel transport. This is bound to bring a tear to the eye, as we are reminded of all those who served and sacrificed so much for us during the War. In contrast, sounds of laughter and music will fill the air as children enjoy the rides (some of which are free or subsidised) and many attractions, including free puppet shows and face-painting. There will be music to suit all tastes, including new this year a steel band, to really add to a carnival atmosphere. Singers performing a variety of genres of music, and dancers of many styles, are there to entertain you throughout the day. You will also be treated to the sound of pipes and drums by the Haverettes All -Girl Marching Band and the Peterborough Highland Band. Don’t forget to line the streets from 10am to wave and cheer on the Parade as it winds its way from Broad Street, ending in the Market Square, where the Mayor will officially open the Festival. Why not pay a visit to the Schools Art Exhibition where over one hundred entries will be on display at the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street? What a proud day for those students from Sir Harry Smith Community College, Alderman Jacobs, Park Lane and New Road School, who worked hard on their entries and will have their work seen by many on the

World War II Flypast at Whittlesey Festivalday. Come and enjoy looking around the many stalls that will line the streets and areas near the Market Square, together with the amazing display of vintage vehicles along Broad Street and Market Street.

Garden Jobs for Augustl Take advantage of the dry weather by painting fences, sheds and other wooden features with a preservative. Replace broken glass panes in greenhouses and fix leaking shed roofs before the autumn rains. Greenhouse guttering can also be checked to ensure it is not blocked with debris.

l Clean up patios and hard surfaces to get rid of moss and algae. Doing this job now will prevent them becoming slippery during the winter.

l Mow lawns lightly to avoid too much drying out and rake out old grass. On very hot and sunny days watering should be carried out during the evening to prevent scorching. Also, if you need to feed your lawn do it in the evening when it is cool and water any treatment in well.

When you are at home, take the time to prune summer-flowering shrubs.

l Cut back the foliage and stems of herbaceous plants that have already died back (e.g. Dicentra). Hardy geraniums can be cut back a little to remove tired leaves and encourage a new flush of growth. Prune climbing and rambling roses once the flowers have finished. Don’t cut off the flower heads of ornamental grasses - these will provide winter interest.

l Don’t neglect hanging baskets - deadheading, watering and feeding will help them last through until autumn. Deadhead plants such as Dahlia, Roses, Penstemon and bedding to prolong the display of colour well into early autumn.

St Mary’s Church Open at Festival

St. Mary’s Church will be opening its doors during the Whittlesey Festival, on Sunday September 6th. There will be refreshments available, and the tower itself will also be open for trips. Hungry visitors can take advantage of a cake and preserve stall, which is being held in aid of St. Andrew’s Church.

The church will be open from 10am until 4pm.

ART, BRIDGE, CARD MAKING/ PAPER CRAFTS, CYCLING, FAMILY HISTORY, GARDENING, GO (GRUMPY OLDIES!!),

HISTORY OF ART, MAH-JONG, RUMMIKUB, SINGING, TABLE TENNIS AND WALKING.

These are the Interest Groups already up and running, led by members for the members! Not only these, but Computer Skills, Film Club, French, Photography, Spanish, Woodcraft, Board Games and a Sunday Lunch Club are all in the process of being set up. Plus, a “Travel, Theatre Trips and Outings” Section has been mooted, and plans are afoot to progress this soon. You can see that things are moving on apace with the newly-formed Whittlesey U3A, an international charitable organisation specifically for retired persons or those no longer in full-time employment. The singers, known colloquially as “Whittlesey Warblers”, are in real need of a pianist. If you can play, and are willing and able to come along for ninety minutes on Wednesday afternoons, you will be welcomed with open arms! Our next Open Meeting is to be held at Childers in Station Road, 2- 4pm on Thursday August 20th, where the guest speaker will be Mr David Coombes, a solicitor, who will provide an insight into consumer and customer rights! Non-members are welcome to come along as guests to a single Open Meeting to see what the U3A is all about and hopefully, make a decision to join. Why not give it try? Stephen Barclay MP was guest of honour and speaker at a recent Whittlesey Conservatives celebration cheese and wine fundraising party. The event, which was held at the home of Robert and Julie Windle, was a double celebration with Mr Barclay being promoted to a government whip, and the Conservatives election successes in Whittlesey in May. Over forty attended the fundraising event, and £620 was raised for party funds. Mr Barclay spoke and answered questions about the role of a government whip. Coates Athletic, which is soon to become Whittlesey Athletic, have scooped some prestigious, off-the-field, awards. Firstly, the adult section was voted byPeterborough Referees Association as aworthy recipient of the “Hospitality and Attitudeto Referees Award”. This was followed bythe club receiving the “Peterborough YouthLeague Chairman’s Award”, for the way the clubconducted itself, as well as the “Under 15s FairPlay Award”. Alderman Jacobs School Fete

The Friends of AJS Summer Fete was held on Saturday July 11th, and we were rewarded with a scorching hot day for the third year running. The fun started with a giant Minion officially opening the fete. We had an amazing turnout from the residents of Whittlesey. The AJS children had worked hard to perform a showcase in the arena for all to enjoy. A big well done to the choir, recorders and the early years children showing off their singing and dancing skills. Support from the local community was outstanding, with well over fifty prizes donated by local businesses, which enabled us to raise a substantial amount of money. Special thanks to Kescho/NISA and their very generous donation from the Make a Difference Locally Fund (MADL), and Round Table for their donation of £150. We would like to say a big thank you to all the local businesses who gave prizes, gifts and goody bags, and those who joined us on the day holding stalls. We are proud to be able to support our locally based charities and were joined by several on the day. The friends of AJS team started planning the fete back in February, and a lot of hard work is required to pull it all off. The fete is a real team effort involving FOAJS, partners, children, grandparents, teachers and school staff. The final thanks should go to all the adults and children who came along on the day. During my first month as Mayor of Whittlesey, both my wife and I have been extremely busy. We have attended civic services in various neighbouring towns and have also visited events locally. Recently, I had the pleasure of meeting Edith Wade, an amazing lady who has been fund-raising for over twenty-five years and enjoyed a strawberry and cream tea in her garden with lots of her friends. I have to thank Sue Juilian of The Gables for organising my visit to this event. Thank you Sue. On Friday June 26th, along with my wife, we attended an evening function for the new High Sheriff of Cambridge, Captain Victor Lucas RN DL. This was a delightful evening in the gardens of his house in Warboys. We were lucky to be entertained by the band of the Royal Marines. What a super event! The villagers of Warboys were able to view the event from the churchyard next door. I would imagine there are hundreds of photos and videos of the event going, by the number of phones and iPads around. Whittlesey Town Council was sad to hear of the cancellation of this year’s Circuit of the Fens Cycle race. This event has proved in the past to be a great crowd puller for Whittlesey and surrounding villages. It seems that circumstances beyond the organisers’ control have caused this cancellation. We can only hope that this event will return next year. By the time you read this, the town council will have organised a musical event on the Market Place, on July 26th, to entertain the public. A further event has been organised for Sunday August 16th, with music from Andy Coulson and Children of the Revolution. The entertainment will start at 2pm and go on until 6pm. This event

will then be followed by the Whittlesey Festival on Sunday September 6th, which last year drew the largest crowd since the festival started. The display of motor vehicles grows every year and, to a self confessed petrol head, is a delight to behold. It also brings revenue to the local shops and businesses from far and wide. This is a massive family event that we hope everyone will continue to support. We are now into July, and our first visit was to RAF Alconbury at the invitation of our American friends for their Independence Day celebrations. We were treated to a magnificent firework display at 10.30pm. Our friends from the USA sure know how to party! While I have enjoyed all my Mayoral duties so far, I am also a District Councillor and have important duties to perform. I do not intend to neglect any of my duties, so it looks like I will be a busy man. ime passes. We leap forward to 1539 and Whittlesey has been transformed. From Horsegate in the west, to High Causeway in the east, the town is full of thatched cottages and stone built farmhouses. The great Abbeys of Thorney and Ely still own most of the town, hamlets and fields. At Eldernell is the pilgrimage Chapel of Our Lady Mary. It had been raining all night and the sky was leaden grey as the stones of the gatehouse to St Mary’s. John Aveling stood under the archway by the stairs to the porter’s lodge, looking gloomily towards the High Cross. The day he had privately dreaded had arrived and he had the unenviable task, as the Manorial Steward, of collecting the keys to the chapels of Eastrea and Eldernell, to deliver to the Commissioners who would arrive the next day. Much of the legal work had been done; the chaplains and priests had taken their pensions, possessions and departed, or so he fervently hoped, and only this last task remained. Two figures stood by the High Cross. His heart sank as he saw that they were Andrew Ryppe and Richard Smith. Both were tenants of the Manor, and both had been vocal in their support of the Pilgrimage of Grace of three years past, to the point that they were fortunate not to lose their cottages. It was only through the benevolence of the Whittlesey court that their behaviour had been tolerated. The last thing John needed was these two making a scene, or worse, on a task he liked doing no less than them. “So it’s come then,” Andrew shouted, crossing to the Steward, Richard following. “It has”, he replied, “and it’s no more easy for me to do than you to say; but it’s to be done and better by one who will do it with dignity.” “Shameful, that’s what it is.” John nodded but said nothing, and the three stood under the arch looking at the rain. After a minute or two, John said, “Well I’d best be off then.” “You walking?” Richard asked surprised. John nodded. “Why?” “Seemed more fitting to me.” That appeared to take some of their antagonism away as if they appreciated the unpleasantness of the task that John felt. “Aye well,” Andrew muttered, “I suppose if it has to be done, best you do it, not one of them leeches.” John pulled his cloak around him and set off in the direction of Eastgate, thankful for the fact that the other two were not following. By the time he got to Eastrea he was soaked and

one of his boots felt like it was leaking. Holy Trinity Chapel stood round the corner from the Pilgrims Hostel on the road, down to the mere, and the churchwarden’s cottage was on the opposite side of the lane. He collected the key and went across to the Chapel, which was empty, and he turned back outside and locked the door. Walking across the field he came to the White Cross. How many pilgrims, he wondered, had paused here. He was not a particularly religious man, but as he travelled in their footsteps, so to speak, he felt the emotions stirring within. So many had come this way, often barefoot, in all weathers, to pray for a multitude of different reasons but with the faith that they would be comforted. By the time the great building, that was the Chapel of Our Lady Mary, came into view at Eldernell, he was in a turmoil. He had collected the key from Mr Ground at Coates, showing him the written authority and seal he carried in his leather bag. The farmer had said nothing after reading the vellum but the look on his face made John hurry to the door. He unlocked the Chapel, entered the building and the sun that had been fitfully showing itself between the clouds, now shone suddenly through the great stained glass windows in a glory of colour. Overwhelmed, John knelt in the silence and atmosphere. At last he came face to face with so many centuries of worship and the knowledge that here it now ended. He knew that the new farmer at Eldernell intended to turn the building into a barn and soon cattle, carts, hay and straw would change the atmosphere forever. It was then he saw, near the high altar, the statue of Mary, her smiling face looking down at him, forgiving what he was doing. Something that had been dormant within him awoke then. He knew what the countless pilgrims who had been here before knew. He found his faith.

The bench is situated on the corner of Whitmore Street and Windmill Street; we also plant and maintain a small garden and three flower barrels at this site. We are very grateful to Whittlesey and District Round Table who sponsored the bench, and to Whitmore Guest House and Caesar Smith who sponsor the barrels. Our group welcomes two new members: Emily Baxter and Richard Phillips. We are proud of our achievements and have carried out dozens of small, but significant, projects over the past nine years. None of this would be possible without the help we receive as a group from all of our friends, volunteers and supporters.

Be heat-aware, says elderly care specialistWith temperatures set to soar this summer, local at-home care company, Home Instead Senior Care (Peterborough), is advising members of the community to help older people to take precautions, as temperatures climb across the UK. In warm weather, we advise people to turn off non-essential lights and electrical items; open windows during the night; and to drink plenty of water and cold drinks to avoid dehydration. Amy, of Home Instead, said, “We provide care for older people, and their bodies in particular, are often unable to adjust to sudden changes in temperature, which makes them more susceptible to heat exhaustion and heat stroke. “They are more likely to have medical conditions that can change normal body responses to heat, and they may well be on medication which can also

impair their ability to regulate their temperature. So, for this group, it is particularly important that precautions are taken. “I would urge people to look out for vulnerable elderly relatives and neighbours if the hot weather continues. We are paying particular

attention to Public Health England’s (PHE) advice and their ‘Heatwave Plan’ which we are sharing with our caregivers. “We are also advising our clients and older people in the community to keep out of the sun between 11am and 3pm, and when they do go out, to seek out shady areas, wear sunscreen, a hat, loose cotton clothing and sunglasses, when being outside is necessary. “Keeping hydrated is also really important, so older people should drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, ideally cool drinks.”

Macmillan Cancer Care Support and the Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice have each received a cheque for £1,000, following donations made in memory of well-known Whittlesey woman Maureen Hunt, a long-time employee at the Co-operative store in the town who died recently after a short illness. Her husband Ray, daughter Anita and son Philip were on hand, along with some of her former colleagues at the Co-operative store, to present the cheques to Sue Ryder's Jo Marriott, and Macmillan clinical nurse specialist, Linda Launchbury. The donations were made at a packed St. Andrew's Church following the funeral, and from shoppers at the Co-operative store, where a book of condolence was opened in memory of Maureen, who had worked there in a variety of roles across several different departments, and in a supervisory capacity since 1991. A Co-operative spokesman said: “Maureen was a highly valued member of the management team and was well known and liked by the customers. She was a great friend to us all and

In memory of Maureen

Bus Services between Peterborough and WhittleseyFor almost two years now, I have been lobbying Stagecoach, through Fenland District Council and Cambridgeshire County Council, for improved bus services to and from Peterborough for our residents in Whittlesey and the surrounding villages, who rely on public transport for social and business reasons, particularly employment opportunities. I believe the need for improved services from Stagecoach has increased of late, with the demise of Judds Transport, which has left the area with a further shortage of buses, and handed Stagecoach a monopoly situation. The main issues are over-crowded buses in the early morning and lack of any buses after 6.40pm, resulting in anyone wishing to travel after this time having to pay taxi fares of between £15 and £20. The latest suggestion by Cambridgeshire County Council is for late night travellers to use the 19:50 or 21:45 train from Peterborough to Whittlesea railway station, at a cost of £4.50; a solution which I regard as impractical, particularly for those living further along the A605 in Eastrea and Coates. Community Transport (FACT) has been mentioned on several occasions, but unfortunately this method of transport is generally limited in this area to the hours of 10.00am to 2.00pm.

The comments that I have received from Stagecoach suggest that there is little or no demand for extended bus services. Whittlesey Town Council has given official backing to a publicity campaign to challenge the assertions of Stagecoach that there is no requirement or evidence to support improved bus services. However, the evidence supporting the need for improved services can only come from the general public and if there is sufficient support for this campaign, the findings will be put to both Cambridgeshire County Council and Stagecoach. I will also approach other bus companies with a view to their tendering, in competition with Stagecoach, should the public deem this to be necessary. Therefore, if you wish to support this campaign, I would urge you to write to me at the Whittlesey Town Council offices at Grosvenor House, Grosvenor Road, Whittlesey PE7 1AQ or by e-mail to [email protected]. The past can, as many are proving today, either become: A Springboard To Greater Things A Drag Factor To Progress Because our current experiences very quickly become part of our past, how we handle it will determine whether we look back on it with joy or grief. But what of those who were left to muddle through life without any reliable help or guidance? Many are carrying so much negative baggage that even the pain of self-harm, or the fear of their suicide attempt not working, appears better than the never-ending internal conflict.Keeping The Past In Its Right PlaceMany times I’ve heard the phrase: ‘You cannot change what has happened in the past’. But think of this - ‘You may not be able to change the past, but you can change the effect it has on your present and future’. The Northwestern Wildcats, an American football team, had not won a season in twenty-four years and, after losing twenty-four consecutive games, had become known as the college football losers. However, in 1995, under their newly appointed head coach Gary Barnett, who week by week had inspired and challenged them not to live under the cloud of their past, they were now ranked eighth in the nation. Gary Barnet himself had won seventeen national Coach of the Year awards. As the team gathered for a prestigious award

ceremony, to the roars of the gathered crowd, the coach handed each player a placard stating their accomplishments. Finally, to a deafening roar, he lifted high the placard representing his personal seventeen national Coach of the Year awards. As the applause subsided, he took one final glance at his placard, then to the amazement of the crowd, dumped it in a bin at the side of the stage. Seeing this, one by one, each team member dropped their placards on top of his until the bin overflowed with their 1995 awards. They understood why he had done it, but the crowd didn’t. Taking the microphone he said: “Look at the calendar, it’s 1996; the only way to achieve great things in the present and future is to leave the past behind us”. Around 4000 years ago, the very wise and powerful King Solomon, wrote: “God will bring to our memory the lessons learned from the past”. We don’t have to be a slave to our past, or let it spoil our future, we can learn valuable lessons from it, even those negative things in our past.

| Policing your area by Paul Harris, Whittlesey Geographic SergeantSizzling weather and long summer nights have resulted in a large demand for police services across Fenland. We have responded to a large number of incidents, and officers have been working hard to help keep the community safe.We have had a month of mixed results with some excellent arrests made for robberies, shoplifting, thefts, burglaries and cultivation of cannabis. Some other excellent results have been achieved with drink drivers. One driver was found to be five times over the legal limit. These kind of arrests do not come easy. They take investigation, planning, time, investment in our community, and yes, sometimes a little bit of luck. Being in the right place, at the right time! The arrest itself does not mean the end of police involvement. We have to safeguard our victims and very often network with partner agencies, or specialist departments, to

make sure every effort has been made to minimise any risk highlighted to an individual or sector of the community. This process, interlinked with managing calls of anti-social behaviour, means there is much work to be done. I am lucky; I have a passionate team that work hard to deliver. However, no matter how hard we work, sometimes an event or series of events, will bring concern to the community. Please be assured, we, your policing team, will do all we can to reduce the risk of harm, protect vulnerable people, investigate crime/anti-social behaviour and address concerns you have. We have in the past, and will continue to do during busy periods, enlist the services of specialist departments in the police service to support us in delivering our priorities. I hope this message brings confidence to you, and that you will continue to help us make Whittlesey, and the surrounding areas, a great place to live.

Amounts of cash were taken from safes, and one or two other objects. Everything had been securely locked away. All of the thefts, except St Andrew’s and one from St Mary’s, occurred whilst the buildings were locked, which resulted in damage to windows. At St Mary’s, this involved a Victorian stained glass window. On the Tuesday afternoon, St Andrew’s and St Mary’s were open and access was forced into the vestries. Although not much was taken and the damage is repairable, these incidents have shocked many people. Some have made their feelings known personally to members of the congregations and their ministers whilst others have made use of social media. We would like to thank you for all the concerned expressions of sympathy and support. St Andrew’s and St Mary’s are open daily again and will remain so. As sacred spaces they serve the needs of people who visit. Along with our sister

churches, we have taken seriously the advice given by the police. The police provided prompt support and investigation which has resulted in the arrest of one suspect. We thank them very much for all their help and work. These incidents have unsettled us all. The experience will make us feel vulnerable for some time. If you have had a burglary at home, you will know how it feels. We share with you that sense of invasion and helplessness. We will keep on and continue to provide a Christian ministry and presence in Whittlesey and district, with the local support we depend upon. No money is received from the State for any of our churches. We give thanks for, and appreciate, all your support. May God bless us all

On Tuesday 9th and Wednesday 10th June there were a number of thefts from church properties in the town: St Andrew’s, Queen Street,

the Salvation Army charity shop and two at St Mary’s.

At the start of the year, Whittlesey AA embarked on a radical change to their fixture list, and it has to be said that there were more than a few eyebrows raised when it was announced that, through the summer months, the club would be fishing local stillwaters, and would not start fishing their own fenland drains until October. A lot had to do with the continuing

weed problem all clubs have suffered over the past few years, but also to attract more anglers to the club, presenting them with a variety of waters throughout the whole of the 2015/16 season. It did not start too well, but as the weather picked up and the fishing improved, so did the attendances, and the forward-thinking club committee deserve some credit for trying something new. They do have one of the most comprehensive fixture lists of any club in the area and deserve to

Quite a few of their matches have been on Float Fish Farm Fishery, a complex that has really caught the eye of our local anglers; both match and pleasure fishermen have had a great time. Don’t forget, this venue also has a specimen lake with carp to 30lb plus, and some very big cat fish too. There has also been an added bonus for anglers that still prefer to fish natural venues, as with very few matches, pleasure anglers have had the choice of mile upon mile of the Twenty Foot Drain, Cock Bank and Glassmoor Bank to fish as and when they want to, all for the price of just £17 for the season - remarkable value. To be fair, the fishing has been a little patchy, due in part to the weed and the extremely hot weather we have had. Those after tench and bream have had some good nets from Glassmoor Bank, particularly from the bottom end. One or two dedicated carp anglers have also taken fish well into double figures from the same stretch of water. The hot pegs close to Burnt House Bridge on Cock Bank are always reliable for the odd tench or two, and anglers have also reported a good head of perch in the same area. It’s not been an easy summer so far for pike anglers, small fish have been taken regularly on lures and spinners, but few anglers have reported any specimen fish. That’s all to come though, once we head into the winter months, so for now if you are looking for some pike fishing, your best bet could well be a roving approach, casting out spinners but keeping on the move to cover as much water as possible.

Eye-catching posters designed by children at a Whittlesey primary school are to be displayed around the town in the latest move in Fenland District Council’s campaign to combat dog fouling. The four brightly coloured posters were the winners in a competition held at Alderman Jacobs school. Each one is headed “The children of Alderman Jacobs say…” followed by slogans such as “Your dog’s business is nobody else’s business” and “Dog Poo – pick up your poo or it will be blamed on you”. The winners and runners-up from two age groups –Years 1-2 and 3-6 – were each presented with prizes today [July 7] by Councillor Peter Murphy, FDC’s Cabinet member responsible for the environment. The idea for the competition came from Sally Mitchell, one of the council’s Street Scene officers, after she had received a complaint from one of the parents about dog mess on the school run. Sally and fellow officer Ann Marshall attended an assembly to highlight the need for people to clean up after their pets. They asked the children to design an anti-fouling poster to support the council’s current campaign, which is running alongside the Dogs Trust’s national “Big Scoop” campaign. Cllr Murphy said: “Getting children on board is so important for getting our message across - they go home and pass it on to their parents.

And these posters are terrific – they show this is a problem they really care about that affects the whole community. I’m sure they’ll make a real impact.” The four winners were Adam Simpson and Harriet Neal (Years 1-2) and Sophie Lawrence and Ben Peters (Years 3-6). Each received a free family swim pass at FDC’s Manor Centre and 25 per cent off the cost of a birthday party there. They were also given promotional rosettes and Scooperhero capes provided by the Dogs Trust. The school received 25 per cent off the price of a group swim.

WHITTLESEY & DISTRICT NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

Following on from the July article, Whittlesey Neighbourhood Watch had their AGM on July 30th, and we welcomed new NHW co-ordinators in Hemmerley Drive, Snoots Road and Turves. Neighbourhood Watch is about being a ‘better neighbour’. We receive regular updates from our local policing team and hold four meetings a year. NHW promotes safe neighbourhoods and we have direct contact with our area policing team. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 15th September 7pm at Grosvenor House, (Whittlesey Town Council offices/side door). Why not re-join or become a NHW Co-

A free guide giving the latest details of all the public transport schemes and providers now operating in Fenland is now available. The Fenland Transport Directory brings together information about bus and train operators, taxi companies, community car schemes, dial-a-ride and NHS Patient transport, including their contact details. The guide has been compiled by the Fenland Transport and Access Group (TAG). It was originally produced in 2012, when it was the first of its kind in Cambridgeshire. It has now been fully updated to include advice on how to get bus and train information on your mobile phone, tablet or computer. It provides details of electronic services such as the My Bus Trip app, Traintracker Text and National Rail Enquiries’ Train Alert service. It also includes email and Twitter addresses for Fenland’s public transport providers. Councillor Simon King, FDC’s Cabinet member responsible for transport and TAG’s chairman, said: “We are obviously particularly keen to help people who don’t have their own cars to see what other means of transport are available. But

we also want to encourage car owners to make more use of public and community transport as an alternative to driving. “There are many different services on offer but one of the big problems is that people don’t know who provides what. This updated directory contains details of all the operators and summaries of their services, as well as all the essential contact information.” The Fenland Transport and Access Group includes representatives from Fenland District Council, Cambridgeshire County Council, FACT, NHS Cambridgeshire, Care Network and the Fenland Strategic Partnership. | A word from Councillor Chris Boden - one of Whittlesey’s Town, District and County Councillors

I’d like to thank “Discovering Whittlesea” magazine for the opportunity to write a monthly article, so that residents can be kept updated with relevant developments in our local Councils. It will be useful in this first piece to summarise the major functions of each Council, since many people don't know which Council is responsible for which service. Cambridgeshire County Council looks after highways, public health, transport, libraries, refuse disposal [but not collection], social services, some planning applications and education (although recent changes mean that the County often just passes money from the Government to schools without influencing how it is spent). Fenland District Council’s main statutory functions include housing (but most day-to-day management is now devolved), most planning matters, recycling, refuse collection [but not disposal], collection of council tax and non-domestic business rates, housing/council tax benefits administration, licensing (including taxis, premises serving alcohol, keeping potentially dangerous wild animals and a wide range of

other licensing issues), emergency planning and electoral services. Whittlesey Town Council deals with more local matters including allotments, giving grants to local organisations and consultation on local planning applications. But all levels of local government try to work together and there is considerable co-ordination between their areas of responsibility. The County’s budget (excluding education) is £690 million this year, FDC’s is £16 million and the Town Council’s is £152,000, which gives a stark financial context for these authorities’ different roles. Both of the Town’s County Councillors (Ralph Butcher and myself) are also Fenland District Councillors, and all seven of the Town’s FDC Councillors are also Town Councillors, so we strive to protect the Town’s interests at all levels of local government and all of your Councillors are very willing to help with problems or concerns regardless of which authority is technically responsible.

Ingredients (makes two flatbreads):

• 175g self-raising flour• 5 tbsp milk

• 2 tbsp thick Greek yoghurt• 1 red chilli, seeded and

finely chopped• 2 tbsp fresh mint

• 2 tbsp olive oil• 12 cherry tomatoes

• Good splash of balsamic vinegar• Salt and pepper

Method:1. Heat a large, non-stick frying pan and a small saute pan. Sift the flour into a large bowl with a

good pinch of salt. Make a well in the centre and add the five tablespoons of milk with the yoghurt, chilli and mint. Quickly mix to a soft but not sticky

dough, adding a little extra milk if necessary.

2. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured work surface and gently knead to a smooth dough.

Divide the dough into two portions and then, using a rolling pin, roll out each piece to a rough oval

shape, about 1cm thick.3. Add a thin film of oil to the large frying pan, and cook one of the pieces of dough for 2-3 minutes on each side until cooked through and lightly golden. Remove from the pan, pat dry with kitchen paper and keep warm. Repeat with a little more of the oil

and the other piece of dough.4. Meanwhile, add the remaining olive oil to the saute pan. Tip in the cherry tomatoes, tossing to coat them in oil. Pour in a little balsamic vinegar

and continue to cook for a couple of minutes until the tomatoes begin to burst, tossing the pan

occasionally.5. Season the balsamic tomatoes and spoon on top

of the flatbreads. Arrange on a chopping board and garnish with chopped fresh basil or coriander.

Cherry Tomato and Balsamic FlatbreadsThese are great to make up for a family BBQ, as a starter, or just to put on

your table with some meat and salad. Be adventurous with your flavours - try chopped coriander with green chilli on top, it’s a real winner!

Charity shop manager takes on Thames Path ChallengeWhittlesey charity shop manager, Lorna Hazeltine (44) who lives in March, will be lacing up her walking boots this summer as she takes on a 100km endurance walk in aid of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH). The Thames Path Challenge is an organised event, which is now in its fourth year, and sees participants push themselves to their limits with a range of distance challenges. Lorna will begin her journey on Saturday September 12th, walking through the night, and aims to complete the walk from Putney Bridge to Henley, in around twenty hours. Lorna, who has worked at EACH since it opened, said: “I’ve never done anything like this before, but I’m really looking forward to the challenge! I have worked at EACH for four years

- I am so passionate about the charity, and the care and support they provide to families”. As the summer term draws to a close, New Road Primary School in Whittlesey will be going to the ball. The children have been busy rehearsing for their end of year production of ‘Cinderella

and Rockerfella’, a lively musical tale of Cinders and Rocky, the artist formerly known as Prince Charming. With humour, songs and dancing, the children are looking forward to entertaining family and friends at their performances this week. Playing the parts of the ‘Ugly Sisters’ are Chloe and Lyla, who have been bringing their own special brand of humour to the rehearsals. “We have created a very good partnership and had a lot of fun,” said Lyla. “Our favourite part is definitely our song, ‘I’m so in love with me’”, added Chloe. Head of School, Mr Stuart Mallott said, “A production like this gives everyone in the school the chance to work together, and the children have definitely risen to the challenge.” ‘Cinderella and Rockerfella’ is one of a range of school musicals written by Out of the Ark.

Neuroplasticity is the secret to our success on this earth. Other animals are stronger, faster, more dangerous, can see/smell and hear better, etc, yet we humans have dominated the earth.

What does neuroplasticity mean? Simply the ability of our nervous system to adapt. This extraordinary ability has enabled us to live in all corners of the earth. What other complex creature do you know which can claim the same feat?

From an evolutionary perspective it gives us the edge, because our wiring [of our nervous system] modifies with each year and varies greatly with each generation. Thus we are evolving weekly without having to wait for the rare occurrence of gene mutations. Other species like insects work on the basis of numbers. Their life spans are short and their families large. Therefore they will go through a thousand or more generations for every one of ours. However they are relying on a gene mutation to occur somewhere along the linage which gives them an edge. But if that mutation does not occur then they change very little. Hence why the common flies behaviour has changed very little since humans have evolved from cooking on an open fire to landing on a moving comet!

So how does neuroplasticity work? Well it essentially means that there is no stringent plan for the wiring of our brain and body. The complexity and number of nerve cells {i.e. Billions - trillions} means that there are hundreds of ways to perform a given task. This is why we see stroke patients recover their ability to walk or use their left arm to open a door. The original path has been permanently damaged however with time, practice and the right rehabilitation they are able to rewire a new pathway which performs exactly the same outcome.

This process of rewiring applies to all aspects of our lives. If you more from a hot climate to a cold, after a few months the rewiring of your temperature control will change, the metabolism rate and absorption rate of your food will alter, etc. Thus giving you the greatest chance of survival in that altered climate. In a negative sense this also applies. It our emotions (e.g. fear, depression, anxiousness) forces us to limit our exposure, our bodies will start to break down those learn pathways because they are not being used and thus a waste of valuable energy to keep them functional. This then makes it harder to do those activities (whatever they are) because our wiring has changed. However, these activities can be wired again but that takes the courage to return to those ceased activities. .

The conclusion to this article is a positive one, we have the greatest gift in the world; our ability to adapt and learn. The more we use it, the greater we and our next generations become.

Baby birdsIf the bird is not injured and has most of their feathers, it is probably a fledgling. These baby birds leave the nest not being able to fly very well, or for long distances, and the parent birds are usually nearby, feeding the baby until it is able to fend for itself. If you have cats, it’s best to try to keep them away, as these young birds are easy to catch. Unless you think the baby needs help, they are best left alone. It is probably not an orphan and will thrive in the wild, but if the bird is in immediate danger, place it in a sheltered spot, a short distance away. No feathers, or only a few, suggests the baby bird might be a nestling. Nestlings will not survive long outside the nest, and should be taken to a wildlife rehabilitation centre for treatment and care. Any injured adult birds can be taken to your local vets, or rehabilitation centre.HedgehogsHedgehogs that have spines, and their eyes open, are young animals, but are usually able to fend for themselves. If it’s not in immediate danger, then you can offer it some food. Suitable foods include dog and cat food (not fish-based), minced liver, or mealworms. Never give cows’ milk, as this can give them diarrhoea. If the young hedgehog can eat the food, it is probably weaned

and can survive alone. You can give fresh food and water, but if you suspect an injury, you can contact the vet or local wildlife centre. Any young hoglets that have their eyes closed, should be taken to a rehabilitation centre or to your vet.RabbitsMother rabbits usually keep their young underground. They emerge from the burrow at around eighteen days and look like miniature adults. If you find a baby rabbit with its eyes closed, then it’s likely something has dug them out of their burrow. In this case, they will need rescuing.BatsAdult bats can be small and are often mistaken for young or baby bats. Any bats should be handled with gloves, and kept in the dark. There are special centres all over the UK that can help and you will need to call Bat Conservation Trust. Any wild animals should be approached with caution. Injured animals can lash out in fear and administer a nasty bite or scratch. With the world descending on England for this year’s Rugby World Cup, the time to get involved with rugby couldn’t be more exciting – and ladies, we don’t mean just the men: women play rugby too! With participation currently at an all-time high, there are multiple reasons why women’s rugby is becoming increasingly popular. Despite being formally known as a man’s sport, the women and girls at Peterborough Rugby Club’s new campaign is proving that we can hold our own on (and off) the pitch. We are inviting you to give it a try, and join our growing team of strong, independent women. Peterborough Rugby Club is delighted to be a club for everyone to enjoy. At Peterborough Ladies, we pride ourselves on having a variety of personalities with different occupations and talents. We are built up of: mums, serving military personnel, doctors, lawyers, scientists, paramedics, teachers, students, and business owners, but on the pitch we are one team with

a shared interest of fun. However, it’s not all about playing rugby: our team also has an active social side. Joining the team this season is an exciting time: we are celebrating the World Cup, and our recent promotion to NC South East North 1. If you would prefer not to play full contact rugby, then we are also taking part in touch fixtures; this means that you can participate in fitness training. Training starts in August at 6.30pm on Thursday evenings, Fortress Fengate, Peterborough, with fixtures starting in September. Anyone is welcome to join regardless of experience (this includes those that have never held a rugby ball)! We are also recruiting girls to join our growing girls side. The team aims to provide more opportunities for girls in sport, as well as building their confidence and social skills. Training takes place on a Sunday morning at Fortress Fengate. Children at Park Lane Primary and Nursery School in Whittlesey are at the forefront of using technology to enhance their work, and that’s official! Following an extensive external assessment, Park Lane Primary and Nursery School have been awarded the prestigious ICT Mark. The award recognises the schools’ success in developing the strategic use of technology in both administration, and across the curriculum. Parents will have proof that their children are attending a school at the forefront of modern technology. Whittlesey Learning Trust said, “Cambridgeshire County Council is determined that all local children will have the best opportunity to excel in the jobs market of the future. Park Lane Primary and Nursery School should be congratulated on this wonderful achievement. This demonstrates the excellent ICT management and teaching that is taking place in local schools.”

Executive Head teacher, Yvonne Waring, commented, “On behalf of Park Lane Nursery and Primary School, I am delighted to be awarded the ICT Mark. Congratulations to Whittlesey’s Aliwal Manor Care Centre’s resident, Jean West, who successfully completed the Race for Life course on Wednesday July 8th at Ferry Meadows. Jean, aged seventy-four, was accompanied by two of her carers, Kera Deane and Julia Allison, and managed to raise over £100 for her chosen charity, Cancer Research UK. Well done Jean!

Whittlesey Masonic Association presents funds

for children’s charitySt. Andrew Whittlesey Masonic Benevolent Association have presented a cheque for £1,750 to East Anglia's Children's Hospices (EACH). EACH is the groups chosen charity for this year, to support with their range of fundraising activity. The impressive amount has been raised locally through a number of raffles and fundraising events. Richard Phillips, Treasurer for St. Andrew Whittlesey Masonic Benevolent Association, said: “Nationally, Freemasons make donations to both Masonic and Non-Masonic charities, in 2014 alone the amount given was over six million pounds. On a local level we organise events during the year and distribute the money raised to regional and local good causes. “This year our Worshipful Master, Ian Fawcett, has chosen to support EACH in recognition of the charity’s exceptional work, and we are proud to be able to present a cheque for £1,750 to support their endeavours.” Beccy Gillings, EACH Cambridgeshire Fundraiser, said: “We would like to say a big thank you to the Whittlesey Masonic Association for their fundraising efforts and for the impressive amount they have raised for EACH. “EACH cares for children and young people with life-threatening conditions across Cambridgeshire and supports their families. Whittlesey Allotment and Gardeners Society (WAGS) will be holding their annual Autumn Event on Sunday September 20th at the St. John’s Ambulance Hall, Plough Road, Whittlesey. The hall will be open to accept entries between 8am and 11am, and judging starts at 11.30am. Refreshments will be served whilst judging is taking place and we will also be holding a raffle. There will be classes for fruit and vegetables, baking and preserving, flower arranging and several classes for children as well. You don’t have to be a member of WAGS to enter. This is a friendly family event, open to anyone within the Whittlesey Town Council area. First of all, a big thank you to everyone who came to see us at our teddy tombola stall at Alderman Jacobs Fete on Saturday July 11th. We raised a total of £101 for the Poppy Appeal. Thanks also go to those people who kindly donated cuddly toys for us to use. Please keep them coming; we will collect any more that you may have in the local area. We advised in the last issue that the RBL Riders commemoration service for Pte Hutchcraft at Whittlesey cemetery, would take place at 11.00am on Sunday July 26th. This was correct at the time of going to press, but later changed to 1.00pm on the same day. Our apologies to anyone who has been inconvenienced by this change. A few months ago, we did advise that the method of annual membership renewal was changing this year. All current members should, by now, have received a letter from RBL Head Office advising of different ways to pay for the membership renewal. You need to select a method most suitable for you and send the form back in the enclosed envelope. If you select to pay by direct debit, they will send you new details. If you select to pay by any other method, they will send you an invoice for you to pay. Once they have received your payment,

they will then send the membership card to you. Please remember that our branch will no longer receive your card under this new system, so we will not be able to deliver it to you. If you have not yet been contacted by Head Office requesting a method of payment, please call the national helpline number listed below. If you have any worries concerning the new changes to the membership subscriptions, please do not hesitate to call either myself or Judy Darby. Our contact numbers are listed below. In a world divided into strict “Factions”, the non-conformist ‘Divergents’ Tris (Shailene Woodley) and Tobias ‘Four’ Eaton (Theo James) are on the run after standing up to faction leader, Jeanine (Kate Winslet). But she will stop at nothing to track them down. Insurgent is the second instalment in the Divergent series, based on the young-adult novels by Veronica Roth. Insurgent returns with Tris as its lead, and the young actress certainly puts in another great performance. The young heroine, who was earmarked as a troublemaker in the first film, grows up quickly and symbolically chops off her hair. The future-earth has been highly regimented, and humanity is divided into five skilled factions: Dauntless are brave, Candour are honest, Erudite are smart, and so on. As a fugitive, Tris is left to try to save humanity, whilst she is tested on five virtual-reality tests. It’s these tests where the stunning visual effects and emotional heart-strings are really pulled together to create a spectacular film.

Avoid Care Home FeesNFU Insurance revealed last year, that over one million homes were sold to pay for care home fees. With average costs of staying in a care home at £40,000 p.a, many people are forced to sell their homes to pay for these costs. NHS local authority care home funding is means tested, so anyone with a certain amount of assets, are not allowed to claim. This means people with homes are usually exempt from applying. However, many people are unaware that they can claim free, long-term funding through the NHS, which is not means tested. Continuing care assessments focus on parents health care needs, such as complexity of their health care, how immobile they are, severity of their condition, etc. Around 58,000 people receive continuing care home funding a year, but

it is estimated that 150,000 more are entitled to it, but do not claim it. There are several steps you can take to avoid care home fees:

1. Be pro active. Consult our expert legal team and set up property trusts. As well as offering future wealth planning guidance, these trusts, the sooner made, offer a high level of protection against care home fees.

2. Apply for Care home funding. This is a complex area so please consult us before you do so in order that we can offer the appropriate level of guidance and support.

3. Have full access to your parents’ medical records. We will help you apply for a Lasting Power of Attorney and to register it with the Court of Protection.

4. Don’t take no for an answer. Many mistakes have been made during assessments, and millions of pounds have been wasted in paying for care home fees which are not necessary.
