Letter from the Mayor

Dear Friends, Welcome to the District of Columbia! I want to thank you for contributing to the tradition of cultural diversity in our city. In the District, we have more than 7,000 African-born residents. That’s the highest proportion of any major city in the United States. One of every ten African-born immigrants in the entire country lives right here. A large group of newly-immigrated residents has a set of needs far different from that of the general population. This includes language access, as many of our neighbors speak limited or no English. Our new Office on African Affairs (OAA) is here to help. Consider OAA your entry point for all things related to the District Government, from buying a home to starting a business. My Administration’s goal is a better life for all District residents, whether they’ve recently arrived or been here for generations. Please let OAA Director Nebiat Solomon know how we may be of service. Sincerely, Adrian M. Fenty, Mayor

About OAA

Vision

OAA envisions the District of Columbia as a commu-nity that thrives on the full engagement of its culturally and socially diverse residents. OAA empowers the Afri-can immigrant community with knowledge and re-sources necessary to enjoy the unique opportunities that the District provides. Equipped with the cultural com-petency required to cultivate strong relationships among diverse groups, OAA will nurture the links between Af-rican immigrants, District government, and the broader community.

Mission The mission of the Mayor’s Office on African Affairs is to ensure that the full range of health, education, em-ployment, business, and social opportunities are accessi-ble to the District’s African immigrant community. By serving as a liaison between the African immigrant com-munity, District government agencies, and the Mayor, OAA seeks to improve the quality of life for African born constituents and their children.
