In 2012, OPEN WORKSPACE has created a unique opportunity and warmly invites you to discover and learn one of the most inspiring techniques within the Art of Acting – the technique of Michael Chekhov, the greatest actor of the 20th century.OPEN WORKSPACE has invited the most innovative masters of the Chekhov technique to share their skills and their inspiration in our three leading Master Classes, which will take place in Lisbon, Moscow and Copenhagen.

Michael Chekhov represented the theater of the future – independent theatre – where the creativity of the actor exists as a living organism. We invite you to the path where all of us can join together to fulfill this intention of the living theater. The actor of the Michael Chekhov technique is not just a performer, but also the creator of the theater.

An actor can go beyond the playwright or the play. The secret lies somewhere outside the theatre and life, somewhere deep in the performer’s imagination. It is the stage’s ineffable, magical elements that truly bring the actor and audience together: the field of energy or vitality that radiates from the actor’s creative work, an actor’s profound and startling character choices, the kinesthetic sensation of perfectly executed corporal movements and sounds – all create a powerful atmosphere, the pure atmosphere of the stage. It is the theatre with a heart.

We firmly believe that our masters at OPEN WORKSPACE will present to you and give you “The keys to the magic of theater,” as Chekhov also strived to give to all his actors. So let us all aspire to evoke the free and spirit-based creation of theatrical art!

Welcome to OPEN WORKSPACE!

THE SUBLIME THEATRE MASTERS IN COPENHAGENIt is our greatest honor at TELLtoJOY to welcome the sublime theatre masters Slava Kokorin and Zoja Zadoroznaja, and to introduce them to our dearest friends and colleagues within the performing arts community in Copenhagen.

These nine days of highly intensive and creative training are titled by the mysterious name “THE ALCHEMY OF PERCEPTION” and will be held in Copenhagen from 5-14 November 2012.

This offering has been designed especially for the advanced educational training program OPEN WORKSPACE. OPEN WORKSPACE is hosted annually by TELLtoJOY Theatre and offers the greatest acting Master Classes in Lisbon, Moscow and Copenhagen, taught by the world’s leading experts in the Art of Acting.

THE NECESSITY FOR THE DRAMATIC ACTORThis Master Class will help actors to finesse their understanding of Michael Chekhov’s comprehensive acting technique. Taught by Slava Kokorin, the Stanislavski Prize winner in nomination of ”The best theater pedagogue,” Slava gives a unique Master Class within the contemporary art of acting.

An action... What is an action? ... What do I do? But what do I do when I do something? What exactly am I engaged with at this moment? What do I experience? With what secret reality am I communicating? What sizzles when a drop of water lands on a hot frying pan? The water? Or the frying pan? I can hear the sound of the hissing and spitting, but where did it come from?

For the select participants of this master class, an indescribable creative path awaits – where you will experience topics such as:

• The Real Space and The Imaginary Space

• Space and Real Time

• Infinite Reaction and Imagination

• Reaction as a Tool for Cognition

• The Role as the Composition of Selected Reactions

• Inner Impulses and Reaction

NEW ‘DISCOVERING AND MEETING VENUE’ FOR ACTORSActors from Portugal, the United States, Denmark, Bulgaria, Norway, Finland, Russia, Belgium and Ireland will meet for these inspiring and unforgettable days in Copenhagen where new discoveries and friendships await. In this amazing venue, our actors will experience the essence of an acting community, including the opportunity to share their experiences with each other, improve artistic skills, obtain new sources of inspiration, and most importantly, to forge new friendships and international connections.

WHAT IS THE ALCHEMY OF PERCEPTION?It took Slava Kokorin approximately thirty years to develop the unique technique that our participants will experience in the Master Class “THE ALCHEMY OF PERCEPTION.” The great Polish reformer and innovator of experimental theater in the last century, Jerzy Grotowski, said, “The system: this is the terminology.” Each director actually produces their own language, and this is perfectly normal.

Page 9: DISCOVER THE HEART OF ACTING WITH THE MICHAEL CHEKHOV TECHNIQUE

“And I did the same,” said Slava. “For me, it is important. For example, the concept of ‘the space’ — real and imagined, is the bearer of important qualities and prepares the actor for the role. Just as a piano can be set with the key intentionally to not be classic; while it may seem that the key is the same, but the sound is totally different. And so it is with the reaction of the actor which arises from and within the scene.”

When asked to elaborate on “THE ALCHEMY OF PERCEPTION” Master Class, Slava explained, “In my life, I learned something and I want to teach it to others. While conventionally, I have called this Master Class “THE ALCHEMY OF PERCEPTION”, this section of the Stanislavsky system has not really been mastered yet. I think one of the problems, a perpetual issue with dramatic theater, is a problem of the input, and not the output. We are becoming more and more fixated on the action itself, which means that we are fixated on the vector from the actor to the partner, to the audience, to the world. But what about from the world back to the actor? This is actually an interesting topic. The audience sees the actor in the action, and sees the action itself – this is a response to a pulse from the outside.”

THE TRAINING OF THE ACTORThinking about the so-called “problem of the entrance,” says Slava, is best done with toolkits created by the famous Russian actor, director and teacher Michael Chekhov. ”In my concept of this Master Class, I include the work of Michael Chekhov and the theory of psychological attitudes. This is new and also old and well-forgotten. At this Master Class, we are going to do exercises that are more than one hundred years old.”

”The Community of the Theatre is a single entity, much like a stringed instrument and the musician are to one another. Without the first two, the music will not exist. In the theater, it’s the same.””Actors must become adjusted to the idea of the author and his feelings. Only then will we get mutual reactions and a real game. In training actors, the important aspects are the psychology and physiology – although some teachers try to avoid this, considering it improper to explain natural laws. But without real emotions and feelings, you can’t act or play,” explains Slava.

The main task of our Master Class, “THE ALCHEMY OF PERCEPTION”, is for Slava to lead actors to grasp the sense of ”the present day,” and through the role to help the actor to edify his understanding of himself. ”When I perceive myself, then I get to be another; I can better understand the world.

Thus, a human released from the hospital will look at life differently, truly seeing what had not been noticed before. I will also teach the actors to speak with the objects and obtain information from them. I’m learning not to play for the game itself. There must be delight and greatness in our work. In acting, as in love, we cannot be false; we must give ourselves fully and completely. Just like on your wedding night, when you have to shout out from the joy. But if you lie down on your side and fall asleep, then it’s not real love.

Go and work with Slava Kokorin! He is an extraordinary man who has developed on his own, his unique approach to the Michael Chekhov Technique. Slava presents high principles and a wonderful approach to opening the actor to impulses and images which live all around, and helps you to discover that which you never thought you could. He is the greatest teacher. Meeting him has changed me.– Lenard Petit (USA), Actor, Stage Director and Acting Teacher, Artistic Director of the “Michael Chekhov Acting Studio” in New York City

Slava Kokorin’s knowledge of acting, his experience as a teacher, and the combined rigor and joy that he radiates when he works, are infectious. Slava is a generous artist and a friend to the Chekhov Community, large and small. I know many of us wish we could jump on an airplane and join him in Copenhagen. All my love and my best wishes for OPEN WORKSPACE work!

– Jessica Cerullo (USA), Actress, Managing Director of the International Michael Chekhov Association, MICHA

IN MY OPINIONQuotes on Slava Kokorin

Page 12: DISCOVER THE HEART OF ACTING WITH THE MICHAEL CHEKHOV TECHNIQUE

This remarkable artist, Slava Kokorin, has made impressions on me that have informed my career as a theatre artist and teacher. Slava gave me a way to look at theatre through his unique lens. So many of the things I now accept as part of my knowledge of theatre, I realize were given to me from what Slava taught — ideas about what acting and theatre could be, the creative process, and the human meaning that makes the act of making theatre a profound experience. If you have an opportunity to work with Slava Kokorin, embrace it! It will change you forever!

– Dawn Arnold (USA), Artistic Director of “The Moving Dock Theatre Company” in Chicago, United States

– Per Brahe (Denmark), World-renowned Mask Teacher and an expert in Balinese Mask, Master Teacher of Michael Chekhov technique and Artistic Director of “Studio 5″ in New York City

If you are an actor who cares about the truest theater, cares about being on stage giving the audience the ultimate experience, than you must join this amazing opportunity to work and experience this genius stage master, Slava Kokorin, at the OPEN WORKSPACE in Copenhagen, November 2012. Kokorin is an outstanding artist, and the teacher who knows what it means to have a good theatrical heart and to lose yourself in artistic development.”
