Introduction

Welcome to our new schools brochure. With the new curriculum comes an opportunity to discover new areas of our collection, and you will notice some new elements to our school’s offer such as the new sessions on the Stone Age and Iron Age. A visit to Tiverton Museum can inspire and educate people of all ages. We house a varied collection relating to life in Mid Devon from pre-history to the present day. The chart opposite is an at-a-glance list of our main workshops and loan boxes available to school groups. We also offer a comprehensive membership scheme for local schools, which offers excellent value for money and helps to foster a close relationship between the museum and local schools. All sessions are carefully designed to maximise effective learning and pre-visit planning with teachers ensures experiences are tailored to the individual group requirements. Our Education team is dedicated to lifelong learning and provides a range of activities and resources for both formal and informal learners. In the brochure you can find some of our more popular offerings linked to the curriculum from Foundation to KS3. If you think we might be able to help you with a topic that is not covered here, please contact the Education Officer to see if we can design something especially for you. In response to the new National Curriculum, we have developed museum sessions based around our collection of local objects such as stone age tools. Sessions cover:

Life in a Roundhouse— How people in the Iron Age became settled and how agriculture and domestication of animals changed their diet, with a chance to taste some Iron Age bread around the ‘fire’. Rot or Not? - How archaeologists discover treasures from the past and what might not survive and why in our simulated dig. Spinning, Weaving and Clothes of the Iron Age— A chance to try your hand at spinning wool on a drop spindle, to weave on an upright loom and a look at a typical Iron Age outfit. Stone Age Object Session— A chance to handle some genuine Stone Age tools–can the flint knife still cut up food?

Stone Age to Iron Age

The Romans

We have an interesting display of Roman artefacts, including the wonderful ‘Bolham Bowl’ found at the nearby site of the Bolham Roman Fort. The following sessions will support learners looking at the Roman Empire. Roman School— Learn how to greet your teacher in Latin, write on our reproduction wax tablets and practice your maths skills using an abacus and Roman numerals. Roman Kitchen— Discover some of the interesting ingredients in a Roman Kitchen and taste some delicious ‘Roman toast’. Roman Roads & The Roman Army - Discover how the Romans set up an efficient network of roads in Britain to transport troops and provisions. A chance to try on some replica armour and hold a replica sword and shield.

Discovering Roman Britain: An Archaelogical Session - develop an understanding of historical layers of refuse and artefacts that archaeologists dig through to discover the past. Handle original sherds of Roman pottery.

The Victorians KS1 & 2

We have a wide range of sessions to help your pupils discover more about the Victorian period. We have grouped the sessions into several sub-themes, but you can mix and match to cover your ideal topics.

Victorian Childhood These sessions help children relate to what it was like to be one of the children who lived in Tiverton–and maybe even went to the school that later became part of the museum. Victorian School— Experience a Victorian School lesson with our strict Mistress or Master, try writing on a slate, find out how lessons were different and what rules boys and girls had to follow. Victorian Toys - Looking at and handling some original and reproduction toys.

Victorian Homelife - Handling original objects to discover what life was like at home without electricity, running water or bathrooms. Make a Peg Doll or Magnetic Fishing Game— Find out how children whose parents couldn’t afford expensive shop-bought toys might have made their own peg doll OR make a game inspired by the handling session and take your home made toys back to school with you (please choose one option).

These sessions can be run for KS2 or are ideal for KS1 looking at Homes in the Past. Victorian Home Life— Handling original objects to discover what life was like at home without electricity, running water or bathrooms. The Victorian Kitchen— Looking at original kitchen artefacts and how they compare with what we use today. Victorian Laundry— In this very hands-on session, dress as a laundry maid and discover what hard work it was using the dolly tub, mangle and sheer muscle power to get clothes clean in the Victorian period. Victorian Christmas— Over the festive period, we can offer a seasonal Victorian experience in the parlour, decorating with home made paper decorations and finding out what Christmas was like for people in rich and poor houses 15O years ago.

Victorian Costume - Try on rich and poor children's replica costumes and find out what they tell us about the materials available and what the clothes can tell us about peoples’ lives in the Victorian era.

Our sessions on the two world wars focus on what life might have been like for those living in Mid Devon during that time - from women working to children living away from home as evacuees.

These sessions are only suitable for Y5 & 6 who have some background knowledge already.

Women and the War effort - What was it like for the women left at home to work in factories and fields of Britain during WW1 and what was their legacy? The Kitchen Front - What challenges were faced in the Kitchen and why? What would the troops have eaten in the trenches? Communications— From pigeons to field telephones, how did people communicate without email or mobiles? Design and make a 'silk' postcard - Look at original postcards sent home from the front before designing your own.

We have a long standing series of WW2 sessions giving children real insight into what it was like to live in Mid Devon during the war years. We'll Eat Again - Food and Rationing in WW2 - Find out about the hardships and ingenious food substitutions of families during WW2. Find out why rationing was needed and how it worked in reality. With a chance to handle genuine ration books and to taste some war time treats.

A Child's War - What responsibilities would you have had growing up in WW2? Looking at blackouts, evacuation, make do and mend and a whole host of objects to explain life for children at this time.

Meet an Evacuee - In the Anderson shelter, meet a real evacuee who arrived in Tiverton in 1942, hear his story and ask some questions.

The Americans are Coming! - Hear about the American troops who arrived in Tiverton bringing sweets, chewing gum and excitement with a chance to see an original military Jeep.

How have culture, fashion and technology changed over the past decades? 195O's - 196O’s - 197O’s —198O’s & 9O’s Look at an original copy of the Radio Times from Coronation Day - what were children watching then and how many TV channels were there? Discover the games on our 1981 school computor. See the interesting fashions of the 196O’s & 7O’s!

How and why do we conserve and display objects in Museums? How do we find out about the past from objects? How can you curate your own exhibition at school? Meet the Curator - Find out what our curator’s job involves and a chance to ask questions. Object Session - Rarely do items come to us with a label telling us all about them. What can we discover through historical enquiry? How can objects be part of a larger narrative? In the stores - A very special opportunity to see behind the scenes, where we keep the many items that we don’t have space to have on permanent display. Discover how we conserve our objects and keep them pest free.

An ideal topic for EYFS or KS1 to start to develop ideas of chronology and historical enquiry.

Victorian Toys - A handling session and chance to play with toys that were popular over 1OO years ago.

Grandma’s Toys- A handling session and a chance to play with toys from the 195O’s & 6O’s.

Make a Peg Doll - Not all children are lucky enough to have lots of toys. Find out how a poor Victorian child might have made a doll from an ordinary peg they found at home and take your own peg doll home at the end of the day.

Toys in the Museum— A look at the Victorian and post-war toys on display in the gallery cabinets and an activity where children have to use their knowledge and historical enquiry skills to sort toys into the correct cabinets.

We are happy to tailor visits to the needs of your group. Barney Bear can take your EYFS group around the museum to find out about the past with topics such as: journeys, toys, homes, seasons, harvest and much more. Call the Education Officer to discuss how we can support your topic.

Tiverton Museum provides a wonderful venue for gifted and talented extension days. We can provide challenging sessions related to History, English, STEM , Art. We may be able to coordinate extenstion days for small numbers of children from multiple schools. If you would like to be involved, please get in touch.

The museum provides ample opportunities for inspiring creative responses to historical artefacts. Why not bring your class here to sketch, write poetry, inspire drama and music back at school or call to discuss hiring our classroom for the day to conduct your own activities. The museum can be used in many ways in different curriculum areas. Use our transport collection to inspire science and engineering projects in the classroom, discover the wonderful old packaging and marketing materials with your graphic design class...the opportunities are endless!

Booking Your Visit

Call or email the Education Officer on O1884 256295 [email protected] to discuss booking a self-led or museum-led visit. Many of the topics offer a selection of mix-and-match sessions. Typically, you will choose between 3-4 sessions for your visit. The children will be broken up into 3-4 small groups and will rotate around all of the sessions which are held around the galleries and in the Education Room. Most museum-led visits will start at around 1O.OO, with a break for a drink and a biscuit which we will provide in the middle of your led sessions. After lunch, you will have some free time to go and look around the museum before leaving to return to school, usually at around 2pm. We are happy to alter this timetable to suit you. We regret that due to the size of the museum and the way that we work with very small groups, our capacity for led sessions is around 3O children. If you wish to visit with more than one class, it is advisable to book separate visits for each class. We believe that the special attention we can give children due to small group sizes makes for a very special day for all of our school visitors. Below, you can see a typical timetable for a class of 3O KS2 children.

We offer a free preliminary visit for teachers planning any self-led or museum-led visit. We recommend you take advantage of this in order to complete your risk assessment and familiarise yourself with the layout of the museum. Please speak to the Education Officer to arrange your visit.

The Education Room can be made available for lunch for both self-led and museum-led groups at no extra charge (subject to availability and prior booking). Please make your need for a lunch space known at the time of booking.

Tiverton Museum is a fully accessible site with ramp access and a lift to access all areas of the museum. Several members of our staff and volunteer team have undertaken My Guide Sighted Guiding training with Devon in Sight and it is possible to arrange special sensory tours for small groups of vision impaired or SEN students.

Coaches can currently park in the Howden Industrial Estate after dropping you off at the museum. A new coach park is due to be opened in Tiverton soon. It is the responsibility of your driver to make arrangements. We can sometimes accommodate minibus parking in the yard, please ask upon booking.

We run a school’s membership scheme which entitles you to certain benefits over the year. It is charged on a sliding scale based on the number of children on roll, starting at just £25 a year! Benefits include: six FREE loan boxes per year, FREE self-led visits to the museum and £1 discount on museum-led visits. Please contact the Education Officer for more details.

We stock a wide range of ‘pocket-money’ priced items and you are very welcome to visit the shop with your pupils. We ask that you split into groups of no more than 8 children and that an adult supervises at all times. Alternatively, ask about our advance order goody bags. These are ready made, pre-priced goodies that can be ready and waiting to be picked up on the day of your visit. Goody bags start at 8Op for a Tiverton Museum branded pencil, postcard of the Tivvy Bumper and glider aeroplane. These bags can sometimes be themed to fit with your trip e.g. Victorian toys for a group studying the Victorian era.

We currently have 23 loan box collections available for schools to borrow. If your school is not a member of the museum, or if you would like to borrow more than six boxes in a year, you can still borrow our loan boxes at a cost of £1O+VAT per half-term period (subject to availability). Details of loan boxes are provided on the next page.

We are always working hard to keep our offer relevant to our local schools. We are currently working on workshops relating to ‘Things That Move’ with a hands-on STEM element. If you would like to feed into research that informs the sessions we develop here at the museum, please visit www.surveymonkey.co.uk/s/XZV6MMH and fill out our online survey.
