Hello againOlder generations enjoy entertaining the youngsters with storiesof their world without computers and mobile phones, thefirst computer games, the VHS vs Beta battle and yes, I evenremember music on 8 track cassettes!  They claim it was a simpler world thenbut technology has brought the freedom to work from home, to stay in touch withfriends and family, to shop online and to find out almost anything I want toinstantly - fantastic.

However, technology doesn’t stop us needing local businesses including someone tofix our computers when they go wrong! And that’s what this magazine is all about; achoice of local businesses in one handy guide.  This a community magazine, too sowhen you feel like interacting with the real world rather than just the virtual onethere’s lists of hobbies, clubs, local events and restaurants to help you choose whereto go.

www.discovercommunity.co.uk There’s too much to practically print in a magazineabout all the local areas we cover so our new website is a great source of communitystuff including a directory of local businesses which advertise in all our Discovereditions. If you are involved in anything that you’d like your community to know aboutplease tell me about it by using the Editorial Request form under Contact us or feelfree to call me.

Best wishes,

p.s My apologies for the absence of the Directory of Independent Retailers this month.  With

the unexpected acquisition of a local Winchester magazine and launching our 8th title

Discover Winchester, I simply ran out of time, hands and energy. But it’s coming, I promise!

Distribution - Discover Southampton is published every month and distributed by local distributors to two alternating areas. In January, March etcit goes to homes in the west side of Southampton In February, April etc it goes to the east side. Each distribution is around 7,500 homes, meaningover the two month distribution we reach 15,000 homes.

Advertising - We understand that the needs of a small business are quite different to those of a big company, and our advertising service is verymuch targeted at independent and local businesses. From advert design to general advice we are here to help you grow. For more details callMelanie 023 8026 6388 or email: [email protected]

WITH the Southampton Maritime Festival on the5th and 6th May, the line-up of confirmedamazing displays, wonderful exhibitions andexciting stalls is set to make for a trulysensational day out!

New additions that will be joining the S.T.Challenge, the S.S. Shieldhall and the flotilla ofDunkirk Little Ships around the Ocean Terminalinclude a food village of continental menus, an icerink and an octopus inflatable play park to keep theyoung (and not so young) ones happy. The not soyoung audience might also wish to inspect thecollection of steam engines of which the HMSSultan’s Super Sentinel Steam Lorry DX 9048 is aparticular master-piece of pre-petrol engineering. This is not to mention the Rolls Royce SilverGhosts, Aston Martins, Vintage AA vehicles andother classic cars. Meanwhile, in the dry dock, remotely operated boats will be joining the ‘hardhat’ divers as they demonstrate changes in divingpractices which can be compared with modern daytechniques that can be seen in the Hampshire andWight Trust for Maritime Archaeology’s MaritimeBus. And with the Lancaster bomber flyover above, you won’t know which way to look!

Explore the inside of the state of the art OceanCruise Terminal where you will discover a globe ofthe ocean floor alongside stunning models fromthe Jubilee Sailing Trust and Medway Queen alongwith stories of ships that sailed the high seas. Allthis is nestled amongst dozens of maritimeheritage exhibitors and traditional stalls. Perhapsyou would like to join in the fun with the war timetheme; help and advice on how to create your1940s look is being provided, and you will be ableto get the perfect 1940s style from the hair salondemonstrating in the Terminal.

Throughout the day and into the evening, dozensof live performances will be provided by a widerange of music from brass bands and 1940s swingto rock bands. The day long flow of music will beinterspersed with the melodic tones of choirs, seashanties and the occasional celebratory blast fromthe whistles of S.S. Shieldhall and S.T. Challenge.

The Mayor’s Maritime Art Competition for under18’s has recently been announced to provide astage for local talent with artistic or photographicflare. Entries of artwork or photographs on thetheme of the South’s maritime heritage are beingcalled for. Southampton’s Mayor and dignitarieswill judge the finalists who will have their artworkdisplayed in the Ocean Terminal over the Festivalweekend. Winners will receive a trophy and a prize, with the overall winner having their art work madeinto a mural inside the Terminal itself.

This event is only being made possible with thekind support of ABP Southampton who are hostingthe Southampton Maritime Festival in their OceanCruise Terminal and with the help of WilliamsShipping Holdings Ltd., the NationalOceanography Centre, the AA and theSouthampton City Council. The AA will beproviding the road signs for the Festival so therewill be no excuse to get lost. Access will be madetrouble free with a park and ride service betweencentral Southampton car parks and the docks. Aregular bus service, onboard rarely releasedHeritage Buses, will be provided free of charge bythe Southampton & District Transport HeritageTrust (www.sadtht.co.uk/main/mbr). It is a day tostep into the past and see Southampton’sdocklands come alive.

IF you have a mobility scooter and the mea-ns to transport it, why not join HampshireRoamAbility?

We ramble all over Hampshire and fringes ofneighbouring counties, three or four a month in thesummer and one or two in the winter, and welcomethose who are mobility challenged, as well asanyone able bodied and family members. We planrambles that are free of stiles, kissing gates andother obstructions. The New Forest, in particular, isone of our favourite destinations as well as manycoastal rambles.

It is a lifeline for those of us who are unable to walkvery well; it means being able to get out intothe countryside and offers the chance to meetnew friends and see interesting places. A seat of learning, a testament to timelessBritish architecture, a sanitary sanctuary forinjured servicemen and women and, of course,a family home.

Townhill Park House has transcendedtime in numerous guises but throughall has retained a certain proud andmajestic heritage.

The use of this grand and prestigioushouse has changed many times andyet unlike many of its contemporarybuildings, Townhill Park Houseremains a building of generousproportions and designed beauty. The house itself has undergone manychanges but nothing can take away

the heritage and deep history that lies behind theheavy oak doors that guard, retain and hide theidentity of the house.

In its formative days, Townhill Park House waspart of the originalmanor farm and laterduring the late 1700s itwas converted tobecome a gentleman’sresidence. By 1897Townhill Park Housewas acquired by thefirst Lord Swaythling,Ivor Montagu for hiseldest son and heir,Louis Montagu, for theimpending marriage ofLouis to Lady GladysGoldsmid. On the deathof his father, Louisbecame the secondLord Swaythling.

In 1911 Louis Montagu started a programme ofimprovement and renovation for Townhill ParkHouse. Louis employed the eminent youngarchitect, Leonard Rome Guthrie who oversawimprovements and renovations to the building.Louis also employed the famous garden designerand horticulturalist of the time, Gertrude Jekyll,to establish the detailed gardens, designingframed views, yew hedging, dry stone wallingand the magnificent sunken garden. Togetherthey planned, built and created the gardens thatsurrounded the house.

In 1927 the house was occupied bythe third Lord Swaythling, Stuart - sonof Lord Louis - after his father’s death.Lord Stuart moved into the housewith his wife Lady Mary. When theSecond World War broke out in 1939,Lord Stuart loaned the house to theRed Cross, where it became aconvalescent home for soldiers. After the war in 1948, Lord and LadySwaythling divorced and TownhillPark House and the estates were sold.

The estates weredivided into lotsand most werebought for housingdevelopment. However, thehouse and 30acres were boughtby MiddlesexCounty Council.

Under the ownership of Middlesex CountyCouncil, the House was used as a residentialboarding school for girls; the use remainedunchanged until 1970.

In the years from 1970-85, Townhill Park Houseafforded yet another use as it provided a suitablelocation for a hostel for Merchant Navy cadets. After the Cadets left occupation in 1984, thehostel closed and the estate ownership changedagain, this time being acquired by HampshireCounty Council. The House was then brieflyused as a conference centre until 1994, when theexpanding Gregg School acquired the house andgrounds to provide a facility of education andlearning. Today Townhill Park House isflourishing under the ownership of ‘The Gregg’and is benefiting from the school’s efforts toregenerate the property to its former glory.

Historical note... The lake at Awbridge Daneswas excavated in the 1920s to provide work forthe local unemployed, each man being paidone shilling (10p) a day and a loaf of bread.Roman occupation of the area is confirmedby tiles, pottery and coins being found atAwbridge House, dating from the late romanperiod of AD 307. The names Danes Roadand Awbridge Danes record the presence ofDanish occupation of the area, possibly fromthe 11th or 12th centuries.

Mottisfont church is a Grade I listed buildingoriginally of 12th century origin that initiallyclaimed pastoral responsibility for Mottisfont,Lockerley and Broughton. Its earliest parts pre-date Mottisfont Abbey.

Among its artefacts, the church contains a17th century clock which has no face and nopendulum. Its movement derives its energysolely from hung weights and a bell is rungon the hour. Which hour is of course any-bodies guess.

The modern road that runs between Awbridge,Lockerley, the Tytherleys, Broughton and theA30 was originally a turnpike {toll) road in themid 18th century. Similarly, the short stretchof road from East Dean joining this road wasalso a toll road.
