TOTAL SEAMLESS INTEGRATION OF SURFACES

Designing with glass is a sophisticated endeavour, but unfortunately extremely inflexible. The high quality RAUvisio crystal glass laminate creates the visual appearance of real glass fronts, paired with the machining advantages of polymer laminate, providing maximum flexibility in terms of production processes. The intelligent product structure with surround edging meets all of the test requirements of the modern kitchen working group (AMK).

RAUvisio brilliant stands for the latest generation of high gloss laminates and can be used in the place of high quality laquered elements thanks to its brilliant depth effects. The invisible laser bond between board and edgeband creates a perfect component.

whether it is in the kitchen, in the bathroom or in the living room - glass is widely used in furniture design nowadays. Glass lends pieces of furniture an air of elegance and quality. Glass as a material is a highly valued component for furniture fronts due to its high quality look and feel. However, this look is also accompanied by extensive production requirements: customised sizing, positioning of handle elements and the free selection of handle solutions are made impossible or require a lot of planning. with respect to industrial production, this results, in particular, in considerable stocking requirements for each model. in addition, the propensity of glass to break also leads to higher reject volumes during processing. However, glass also remains sensitive to impact and susceptible to breakage during daily use. it is also difficult to clean, since after a certain period of time, dirt will invariably accumulate in the joints between the surface and the board.with the polymer glass solution RAUvisio crystal REHAU offers maximum flexibility for fronts, but also a framework solution with a glass effect. Customised and tailored cuts, flexible drill holes for handles, different shapes and the highlight: one single component for all versions. This is the ultimate breakthrough for industrial high volume

production. in addition, weight savings in compa-rison to real glass solutions also open up design possibilities previously not even dreamed about.

Test results according to the AMKRAUvisio crystal is the first polymer glass with the edgeband applied to the reverse that has passed the AMK test. This means that REHAU is setting new standards as a system supplier. The qualified product structure impresses with the perfect alignment of all individual components – surface, adhesive, wooden substrate, balancing foil and laser edgeband.

Welded on all sides with laser edgeband: visually and functionally “invisible joint” between RAUvisio crystal and RAUKANTEX visions results in an end product that is not only visually perfect but also easy to clean and hence a favourite all the way to the end customer.Total seamless integration in high gloss design: with RAUvisio brilliant REHAU demonstrates its expertise in surface design and polymer processing in an impressive manner. in the process, the surface and laser edgeband coordination guide opens up completely new perspectives for high gloss design and an appearance of total seamless integration.

with RAUvisio brilliant REHAU demonstrates its expertise in surface design and polymer processing in an impressive manner. The design match of surface and laser edge opens up completely new perspectives for jointless high gloss design with the appearance of total seamless integration.

Perfect continuous gloss effect

Radius machining presents a special challenge in the case of high gloss fronts. The finishing process dulls the cutter radius, which inevitably leads to undesired “frame effects”. This effect can be com-pletely avoided with special material formulations and new processing techniques together with RAUKANTEX laser edge. The result – a perfect continuous gloss effect over the entire piece – for a new quality of high gloss.

with its high gloss products (surface, edgeband and balancing foil), REHAU offers an exclusive coordination guide for a variety of application possibilities: the system package for high gloss from one source – including a laser version. From laminate to front – REHAU provides the entire product range in ten different colours. This makes RAUvisio brilliant the high quality substitute for expensive lacquered fronts.

REHAU EDGEBAND SYMPOSIUM 2013

TOTAL SEAMLESS INTEGRATION REHAU EDGEBAND SYMPOSIUM 2013

As before, the REHAU edgeband sym-posium started with a practical part in the industrial buildings of the machine manufacturer HoMAG, where partici-pants were able to obtain information about the innovations in the area of edgeband materials and the equipment and tool industry at various stations, and were given an opportunity to observe edgeband processing live.

Optimum finish quality – anti-stress whitening with dual scraper blade

By watching the operations of the KAL 310 LAsER machine, visitors were im-pressed by the optimum finish quality and invisible joint due to the use of the innovative dual scraper blade. The edgeband surface is compacted through the special alignment of the two blades. This prevents stress whitening and creates a perfect gloss effect across the whole edgeband .

Jointless high gloss – surface, edgeband and radius with visual flawless appearanceThe KFL 610 LAsER machine focused on jointless high gloss polishing during the course of the process. The dual scraper blade optimally prepares the surface for polishing. This is followed by a unit developed by Riepe, which uses hard wax and compatible poli-shing discs to polish the cutter radius within the edgebanding equipment. This creates a homogeneous glossy front that could previously only be achieved with elaborately lacquered pieces. starting this year, the method also works with ABs materials in addi-tion to PMMA.

Design and material freedom for substrate and narrow surface

The presentation of laser edging with current design trends using the KAL 330 LAsER machine has become a fixture at the symposium. in addition to edgeband innovations, visitors were able to see, for the first time, how different substrate materials such as medium density fibre boards, chipboard, core board and PP

honeycomb sandwich boards can be edged using laser edge by varying the machine parameters.

Shaping the invisible joint – proces-sing of laser edgebands on the machining centre

Demanding geometries were the topic of choice for the laser stationary technolo-gy segment. A machining centre was used to present the edging of elaborately shaped worktops with narrow external and internal radii for kitchen and office applications. in addition, the presentati-on effectively showed how jointless and frameless appearance can be achieved with thick edgebands.

Stress whitening optimisation on the machining centre

By using a microscope, participants were clearly shown the difference between a standard and anti-stress whitening scraper blade, and between laser and glue processing. The optimum interplay between the two new technolo-gies creates a perfect component.

From practical experience for practical experience – informative presentations by specialists

in the second part of the symposium, practical demonstrations, were supple-mented by presentations by specialists from the areas of edgeband develop-ment, machine and tool technology, as well as polymer surfaces.

At the beginning, Frieder schuler from HoMAG provided information about the latest machine technology for the laser processing of edgebands, whilst Matthi-as Hacker from REHAU reported practice

examples relating to RAUKANTEX laser edge. Jens-Uwe Affeld from REHAU fol-lowed with a presentation on additional edgeband and technology innovations from REHAU.

Ewald westfal from Leuco discussed innovations in tool technology for pro-ducing a perfect finish quality by using a dual scraper blade and the polishing unit.

Finally, Axel Kulke and Thomas Tossmann from Renolit reported on trends and innovations in surface structuring and the new PP light construction panels.

This year’s REHAU edgeband symposium, which was held at HoMAG in schopfloch, focused on the latest developments in the processing of edgebands using laser technology. This was the 22nd time this event had been held, and approximately 200 national and international participants from the kitchen, office and residential furniture industry, and the furniture supplier industry accepted an invitation to attend the event.

The innovative laser welding technology, which can be used to permanently connect the edgeband and board without the use of adhesives and without creating a joint, is becoming increasingly important around the world. Edgeband processing without the use of adhesives has now also made its way to China, where furniture buyers – and hence also manufacturers – are becoming increasingly quality-conscious. REHAU fully meets these requirements with the RAUKANTEX laser edge.

The laser technology, which ensures a perfect high quality finish and a maximum quality of end products, was first intro-duced to a Chinese trade audience at the interzum trade fair in Guangzhou. This was where visitors were able to experience the revolutionary quality of laser-welded components for the first time. since the trade fair, REHAU has been offering its customers in China a selection of the product range with a laser functional layer.

LASER TECHNOLOGY

BRILLIANCE ON THE FURNITURE FRONT THROUGH TRENDSETTING KNOW-HOW IN LASER PROCESSING

The functional and visual advantages offered by laser

technology are clear: by doing away with adhesives and the distracting glued

joint, a perfect visual appearance is created that lends a high quality

and exclusive appearance to the front or worktop. Quality

with total seamless integration.

No adhesiveinnovative laser welding method completely does away with adhesive.

No jointwelding creates a permanently in-visible and functional invisible joint – with a perfect surface finish.

No problemThe processing process, the quality and the design are highly optimised, revolutionised even. A new standard has been set. And all of this possible in a single processing step.

Duo scraper for perfect geometries Finishing unit with polishing deviceRAUKANTEX laser edge

As a powerful system supplier and development partner for edgeband pro-cessing, REHAU has developed new high gloss solutions on the basis of its own material and process expertise. working with network partners, radius machining in the high gloss area was further enhanced and new standards were brought as far as being ready for series production. it is only the combina-tion of laser processing, optimum edge- band materials, finishing blades and polishing unit that create the perfect “all over gloss effect” on the furniture front.

The processors‘ objective is to achieve the profitable production of high gloss fronts on their own. This is made possi-ble by the “seamless” processing flow in one cycle, without additional production steps.

Radius machining without “frame effect”At the same time, radius milling pre-sents a particular challenge in the case of high gloss fronts. Up to now, finishing processes have resulted in a matt finish on the milling radius, which inevitably led to a “frame effect” on the finished component. But now, thanks to the new production process, it is possible to create visual unity between the surface and edge-band. A high gloss radius requires a finely sanded profile surface.

Together to the finish lineTo avoid this distracting effect, REHAU and Hunger together with iMA, Riepe

and Leitz developed a package of solu-tions to which all companies contributed their specific know-how in edgeband processing. The group found a solution that does not require a multi-stage process, but instead can be integrated into an existing continuous process. in this context, three components play a major role: the right edgeband, the right radius machining for edging and the suitable polishing tool.

Optimum prerequisites provide optimum resultswhen it comes to edgeband materials, REHAU supplies the right solution with RAUKANTEX laser edge in the materials RAU-PMMA and RAU-ABs. The edge-band materials also transfer the brilli-ance of the surface and edgeband to the sensitive radius area. Laser technology melts the board and edgeband into one front without a joint. An added factor is that REHAU, based on its many years of expertise in the area of colouring and decorative design, manufactures edge-band materials that are ideally matched to the surface. in addition, ABs and in particular PMMA are excellent perfor-mers compared to other materials due to their good polishing ability.

Perfect form with new finishing aggregatesTo polish the edgeband or radius proper-ly, it must be machined in a special way, which cannot be accomplished with a conventional scraper blade. The solu-tion: an innovative dual scraper blade with two blades developed by REHAU

and Hunger together with Leitz. The new scraper blade features geometries that are ideally aligned for this particular process. The first blade functions as the “pre-cutter” and creates a defined edgeband overhang, which is then removed with the second scraper blade. This finishing blade is configured in such a manner that it always removes a razor-thin splinter of the same thickness. it therefore forms a radius with a minimum level of roughness, and without any tears. This is a revolutionary development in the processing of laser edgebands in the high gloss segment. without reductions in the gloss level and with an extremely impressive finishing quality.

Polished to high gloss in one goThe high gloss lacquered laser edge-bands are subsequently polished and finished during the same cycle. The processed edge is polished to high gloss on the top and bottom by oppo-sing polishing units. To this end, Riepe developed an aggregate unit which uses hard wax and compatible polishing discs to polish the cutter radius within the edging equipment. The hard wax is applied directly to the polishing disc via a special feed unit. The use of a laser function level prevents the formation

of a joint. This creates a homogeneous glossy front that could previously only be achieved with elaborate lacquered pieces. All this happens literally “se-amlessly” in one continuous processing step. The method can also be used with all RAUKANTEX product lines using the RAU-PMMA and RAU-ABs materials, and guarantees the appearance of total seamless integration.

A process of intensive exchange and po-sitive collaboration between the network partners has made it possible to offer components with a flawless appearance to the market, which can easily compete with other more expensive lacquered surfaces.

TAMBOUR DOORS WITH A PURISTIC DESIGN

RAUvoLET pure-line, a joint develop-ment with Lista office Lo, has done away with the “slat appearance” of conventional tambour door systems and replaced them with a homogeneous surface. in this way, RAUvoLET pure-line cleverly combines the advantages of polymer tambour door systems, such as excellent running properties, space saving and unhindered access to the entire cabinet contents, with a flat appearance, which could previously

only be achieved with panel or sliding doors. in addition, the smooth front can be cleaned very easily, in contrast to the segmented surface of tambour door systems.

RAUvoLET pure-line is available in solid colours and also with customised prints. Any print can be applied to the flat tambour doors, ranging from subtle patterns, creative decorative finishes, photos or logos. This creative freedom

enables the optimum coordination of designs in the kitchen or office – and creates new dimensions in room design.

REHAU offers this system for both horizontal and vertical application – including accessory components mat-ched both in terms of appearance and function. RAUvoLET pure-line is now also available as a PvC-free complete system for office applications.

RAUWORKS: QUIET WORKPLACE

RELAXED WORKING ATMOSPHEREIT CAN BE DONE – WITH ACOUSTIC SOLUTIONS FROM REHAU

in addition to these aspects, pleasant room acoustics also contribute to a comfortable workplace, particularly in the case of “open space” concepts, as sound and the associated room acoustics have a major impact on em-ployees‘ perception and concentration.

with its diverse “Acoustic solutions” range, REHAU combines the require-ments for soundproofing and the ab-sorption of noise with functional and aesthetic aspects. REHAU acoustic solu-tions are innovative solutions for modern working environments – from acoustic cooling ceilings to intelligent room tem-perature control, from the patented and multi-award-winning sound-absorbing RAUvoLET acoustic-line tambour door system to the most recent REHAU deve-lopment: RAUwoRKs.

RAUWORKS – a comprehensive range for workplace design

with the development of the RAUwoRKs range, REHAU is taking another step forward in terms of system solutions for the office segment: RAUwoRKs screen, RAUwoRKs partition and RAUwoRKs front are complete modules that cleverly balance room acoustics in modern office environments.

RAUWORKS screen for undisturbed working

The highly-effective acoustic partition element RAUwoRKs screen was desi-gned especially for use at double work-stations. it stands for modern design in combination with sound shielding and absorption in the range in which speech is perceived. Continuous height adjustment, which can be used to adjust each employee‘s workplace to his or her personal requirements, ensure that employees can work without interruption whilst supporting communication at the same time.

RAUWORKS is available in three versions:

- RAUwoRKs split screen: segmented, variable, attached to the desk, customised, manual height adjustment

- RAUwoRKs lift screen: one-piece, free-standing, motorised height adjustment

- RAUwoRKs fixed screen: one-piece, attached to the desk, with the option of placing orga-nisation elements such as pencil holders, storage compartments, etc.

RAUWORKS partition – the perfect room organiser

The REHAU RAUwoRKs space-dividing system offers a flexible solution for acoustic shielding. The partition wall range, the design of which is perfectly matched to the desk partition walls of the RAUwoRKs screen range, can be individually configured thanks to an extensive range of accessories. They are available as individual, free-standing elements and also as variable, linked groups. Changeable fabric coverings in different colours and sizes are custo-mised to adapt to the respective room situation.

RAUWORKS front for a variety of applications

The modular fronts are the special strength of RAUwoRKs front, the ver-tically sliding lifting door module for carcass furniture. Depending on the requirements and office situation, they can be used as, for example, a dis-play, whiteboard, flexible presentation area or pinboard. The module therefore stands for a new dimension in multi-functionality and also plays an important role in optimising room acoustics.

Many companies believe that their employees work more efficiently in open-plan office environments. However, the new workplace concepts can also have some disadvantages. Noise contributes to stress and has a negative impact on performance. in addition, these types of concepts offer little in the way of privacy.

A healthy working environment is not just good for employees, but also increases the performance and productivity of the entire company. office landscapes play a fairly significant role in this context. They organise rooms, lend an air of atmosphere and identity, and also place an emphasis on design.

INTERNATIONAL DESIGN AWARD 2013THE WINNERS HAvE BEEN DECIDED

on 7th and 8th March, it was that time of the year again: the Panel of judges convened for the 9th international Design Award at the MARTa Museum in Herford. Five top international design experts evaluated submissions from students from 46 countries under the motto “Beyond the edge” and selected five winning designs from Germany, Belgium, Korea and Russia.

THE EXPERT PANEL OF JUDGES

Michel Dallaire, born in Paris, is a successful designer from Montreal, Canada. He has received

numerous awards for his work. in 2010, Dallaire received the Good Design Award from the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design, and was nominated for the German Design Prize in 2011.

Andreas Enslin from Germany has been managing the design centre for Miele & Cie. KG in Gütersloh

since 2006. He is a well-respected industrial designer and has received many coveted awards for his work. Enslin believes that the primary role of design is communication: “it is about knowing what customers understand and what will be mea-ningful to them in the future.”

ivens Fontoura is a professor of er-gonomics, colour theory, design history, design theory and interior

design at various universities in Bra-zil. He possesses several university degrees, including a master‘s degree in industrial design with a focus on ergonomics and a master‘s degree in design.

Natalya Maltseva studied journalism in Moscow and is a well-known Tv presenter in Rus-sia. interior design

plays a big role in her life. As part of the “Flat‘s answer” Tv project, she magically turns flats and houses that are in need of renovation into beautiful living spaces.

Liming shen from China is a univer-sity professor of furniture design and technology at Nanjing Forest Uni-

versity. As part of his research activities, he focuses on ergonomics in furniture design. shen has received numerous awards for his work. in 2011, he recei-ved an award for his book “Ergonomics for furniture and interior design”.

The competition The “international Design Award”, which is given out by REHAU and Hettich every two years, aims to promote young talent and identify the trends and visions of tomorrow with new thinking. Taking into account the product portfolios of both companies, students from all over the world were asked to design an intelligent furniture solution for the living room, office or kitchen, which could quickly become a fixture in design planning. Above all, the solution should be characterised by design, comfort and technology.

The international panel of judges (see right) was impressed with the many creative designs submitted by the participants. This did not make their job any easier. The panel of judges finally selected five designs from students from Germany, Belgium, Korea and Russia.

THE WINNERS OF THE “INTERNATIONAL DESIGN AWARD 2013”

INTERNATIONAL DESIGN AWARD 2013

Franziska wagner from the Münster Uni-versity of Applied (Germany) impressed the panel of judges with her design “Let it Dry” – a space-saving and flexible-to-install shelf for easy clothes drying, which is particularly suited to small apartments. when closed, it can be used as a stylish side board. Pulling out the front of the shelf gives way to a practical clothes drying rack.

Another winner from Germany is Ralf Holleis from Coburg Technical College. His design “Türmli” is a creative and multi-functional furniture unit for the kit-chen, dining room or living room, which, as required, can be used individually as a chair or stacked to form a puristic shelf unit. This design impressed the panel of judges on account of its func-tionality, and particularly its clear lines and simplistic design.

Lieven Hendrickx and Emke Gellings from Thomas More University in Belgium also made the top of the list with their creative design “Kitchen Hang Back system”. A multi-functional apron that can be clipped to a track underneath the kitchen worktop and glides along the same, creating three practical benefits for modern users: a relaxed posture by relaxing the spine, protection against contamination and a practical storage space for small kitchen aids such as scissors, towels and others.

Another impressive submission was “Hair” by soyoun Kim from Kookmin University in Korea. “Hair” is a lamp with a “hairy” and rather mystic look, which turns the act of switching on the light into a visual experience. The student was inspired by the phenomenon of electrostatic charging. Turning on the lamp makes the hair on the lamp stand up, giving it the appearance of a floating magical object.

Dmitriy sergeev from Bauman Moscow state Technical University in Russia also im-pressed the panel of judges with his design. “CookPit” is a complex and space-saving stove top system for people who have little space in the kitchen but still want to do a lot of cooking. The idea behind this concept is the integration of a multi-functional stove into the kitchen segment, in which pots of several sizes can be stacked inside each other. inside heating elements make it possible to use the “Cook Pit” as a stove, steamer, slow cooker and deep fryer, which leaves nothing to be desired, even in small kitchens.
