Welcome to the first Discover our city booklet packed with great ideas for you and the family to enjoy in Coventry city centre this summer! There’s a huge choice of things to do, either with the children and family or for yourself and friends, many of which are FREE, so take a look inside. In addition, there’s lots of special offer vouchers at the back of the booklet to make the most of your time in the city centre and save you and your family money this summer!
Although many of you may already know all about the city centre and what’s on offer, we’ve called this booklet ’Discover’ as we think there’s always something new to discover about our wonderful city. Our city centre boasts a building voted the most popular building of the 20th century, Coventry Cathedral and the finest medieval guildhall outside of London, St Mary’s Guildhall. We’re also home to the world’s largest collection of British road transport, Coventry Transport Museum and one of the best theatres in the country, Belgrade Theatre.
So if you are a city or Warwickshire resident looking to make the most of your family time this summer or wanting to discover ideas on where to go and visit, we’d all be delighted to see you here over the summer!

Monday 22 to Friday 26 JulyYou’re standing on it! - Coventry Cathedral(*)A trail around the Cathedral based upon the symbols and other interesting things embedded in the floor. ‘Make and Take’ activities on Wednesday 24 July from 11am to 3pm.
Wednesday 24 and Thursday 25 JulyCan You Dig It? - Herbert Art Gallery & MuseumDrop in between 10am – 1pm and 2pm – 4pmJoin the Herbert’s own experts for a free family-friendly dig activity, handle real archaeological finds, learn about the past and bring along your own finds for identification by archaeologists. Booking is not required, just drop in and join us. Suitable for everyone, but children must be accompanied by an adult.
Saturday 27 July Saturday Cinema Club - Millennium PlaceCome and enjoy Disney classics on Saturday mornings from 11am - 12.30pm. Limited seating available. See listings on pages 11 to 15 for film details and dates.

Summer programme highlights!
Saturday 20 July to Saturday 27 JulyRoller Rink - BroadgateThe popular roller rink is back! So get your skates on and enjoy a bit of retro disco fun on the open air rink which will be in Broadgate for a week. Boots are available for all ages and the rink will be open from 12noon - 5pm every day. £3.50 per hour including skate hire, or £3.00 per hour per family (2 adults and 2 children).

Sunday 28 July to Saturday 3 August Crazy Golf - Broadgate Put your putting skills to the test on our free miniature crazy golf course when it hits Broadgate on 28 July. The 9-hole course will provide plenty of fun for your young ones while you relax with a coffee. The course is free to use and all clubs, balls and scorecards will be provided.
Monday 29 July to Friday 2 August ‘It’s old and stained – we’re looking at our medieval glass’ - Coventry Cathedral (*) Rescued from the old Cathedral in 1939, we have the largest loose collection of medieval glass in the UK that is believed to be the work of John Thornton. There will be a trail looking for the evidence of this work and the opportunity to create your own design on the ‘Make and Take’ activities on Wednesday 31 July.
Monday 29 July to Friday 2 AugustBelgrade Theatre Summer SchoolNow running for its third year, the Summer School offers young people aged 8 – 16 years a unique opportunity to develop and share their theatre skills over an intensive week of workshops and rehearsals. Wednesday 31 July Mike the Knight - BroadgateCBeebies favourite Mike the Knight will be making appearances at intervals between 12noon – 4.30pm. For your chance to meet Mike, make sure you join us on the day.

Friday 2 August to 23 AugustKids Aerobics - West Orchards Shopping CentreEvery Friday from 2 to 23 August there’s a free kids aerobics session in West Orchards Shopping Centre between 11.45am and 12.15pm.
Saturday 3 August to Saturday 10 August Giant Games - BroadgateGiant versions of some family favourite board games will be in the city centre from Saturday 3 August. Bring the kids into Broadgate and all week they will be able to play a selection of games including Connect 4, Tumble Tower, Chess, Draughts, KerPlunk, Dominoes and Hopscotch. The games area will be open each day from 10am to 4pm and is free to use.
Monday 5 to Friday 9 August Stained glass gets a 20th century makeover - Coventry Cathedral (*)From the old to the new. There are hidden stories and symbols in our stained glass windows – see what you can spot. ‘Make and Take’ activities on Wednesday 7 August. Monday 5 August Musical Mondays - West Orchards Shopping CentreAs part of the Musical Mondays programme in the centre, come and see a Jessie J tribute act with 20 minute shows on the hour between 12noon and 3pm. Wednesday 7 AugustFireman Sam - BroadgateFireman Sam will be making appearances at intervals between 12noon – 4.30pm.
Wednesday 7 AugustAt the Seaside - West Orchards Shopping Centre, throughout the dayCome and join in the fun with a hand held windmill design and make workshop, Punch and Judy style seaside photoboards, plus a seaside costumed photographer will take a photo that is instantly printed and placed in a display card for customers to take away free of charge!

Saturday 10 August Godiva Awakes – The Homecoming - Coventry city centreOn Saturday 10 August, Imagineer Productions’ Godiva will make her triumphant return to her home city. This year, as part of a joint event with Coventry City Council and Cycle Coventry, Godiva will return to her home city accompanied by a cavalcade of cyclists travelling with her on Coventry’s iconic ring road. Join Godiva as she enjoys a day of street theatre performances, or get on your bike and take part in a range of cycling events in and around Broadgate. Monday 12 to Thursday 15 August Join In Sports Week! - BroadgateBe part of a summer of sport and ‘join in’ to take part in a number of sport taster sessions. Come down to Broadgate to take part in sports tasters, with football, volleyball, tennis, fitness classes, community games fun activities, bowls, basketball and much more. The activity timetable is available on www.visitcoventry.co.uk. On Tuesday and Thursday there will be a mobile climbing wall. Each day will run from 10am to 4pm. No need to book – most activities are free of charge.

Saturday 17 to Saturday 24 August The Beach - Shelton SquareThe popular beach returns to Coventry for its third consecutive year! The beach will return to its original location of Shelton Square and will be open every day between 10am and 4pm.It is free to visit the beach and there will be deckchairs, bucket and spades, a surf simulator and a bouncy castle.

Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 August Coventry Festival of Motoring - Stoneleigh Park/Coventry city centre - 10am to 5pmCoventry’s much-loved Festival of Motoring returns for 2013, after a hugely successful 2012 event saw 20,000 visitors enjoy a fabulous weekend of motoring at Stoneleigh Park. A packed programme of activities is planned across the two days of the Festival, including the flagship ‘historic vehicle run’ on the Sunday morning, which will see 600 classic

There will be an Alice inspired art activity to do as you eat your picnic, helped along by costumed characters. Each participant will be given a trail linked to the exhibition to take part in afterwards. Fancy dress is welcomed! Booking is required. Please arrive promptly. Exhibition: Looking in Wonderland - Herbert Art Gallery & MuseumFree - Sir John Tenniel’s Illustrations to the Alice Books.Continues until 8 September. The exhibition introduces an amazing set of characters encountered by Alice - the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the King and Queen of Hearts, the Cheshire Cat, the Red Queen and the White Queen – and the strange situations she finds herself in.

Exhibition: Sir Quentin Blake - As Large as Life - Herbert Art Gallery & MuseumFree - Opens 27 July and continues until 3 November. Sir Quentin Blake is one of Britain’s best loved and most successful illustrators. The works in this exhibition have been commissioned by hospitals and health centres in the UK. This exhibition was organised by Compton Verney in collaboration with the House of Illustration.
Exhibition: War Effort - Coventry Transport MuseumContinues until 5 January 2014, 10am to 5pm daily.A major new temporary exhibition throws the spotlight on the British motor industry’s huge contribution to the wartime production, during World War II.The exhibition tells the incredible story of how in the 1940s, the UK’s motor companies supported the military, by building so-called ‘shadow factories’, and turning over production to building thousands of military vehicles, staff cars, munitions and other military equipment. Admission is free.
Wartime Summer Holiday Activities - Coventry Transport MuseumContinues until 1 September 2013.To tie-in with the new War Effort exhibition, Summer 2013 is Wartime Summer at Coventry Transport Museum.But the fun certainly won’t be rationed, as there’s a massive variety of crafts and activity trails for families to have a go at, all the way through the school summer holidays. Getting aroundCoventry city centre is easy to get around and all the attractions and venues included here in the booklet are within easy walking distance. The map on pages 16 - 17 marks the main city centre car parks, Pool Meadow Bus and Coach Station and Coventry Railway Station to help you get from A to B. The Tourist Information Centre, based inside the Old Cathedral Spire can also help and is open Monday - Friday 9.30am - 5pm; Saturday 10am - 4.30pm and Sunday 10am - 12noon/1pm - 4.30pm during the summer.
