BAs MatterComprehensive University Education

Students leave CMU with:

• a capacity for analysis, perspective, and commitment

• the ability to employ clear and careful thinking in all facets of life

• the inspiration to make a difference through active engagement in society

• the interpersonal skills and awareness to work collaboratively with others

• an awareness of how politics, philosophy, religion, art, economics, and environmental realities shape our world

The first observation made in a recent Business Council of Canada survey, Developing Canada’s future workforce: a survey of large private-sector employers, reported that companies are increasingly looking to recruit or develop employees with strong soft skills (also known as non-cognitive skills).

These skills are especially important when identifying and developing future leaders.

According to the survey report, the soft skills most in demand are:

· collaboration and teamwork

· communication skills

· problem-solving skills

· people and relationship-building skills

While grades and educational credentials are certainly important to recruiters, companies are increasingly focused on finding people who can work in teams, solve complex problems and show a willingness to learn.

Practica (Work-integrated Learning) CMU is unique among Canadian universities in that every degree student completes a practicum, a supervised off-campus work experience. CMU’s practica program:

· is connected with over 500 community partners in education, healthcare, business, church, legal, social service, agriculture, government, and NGO organizations—both locally and globally· enriches academic learning· offers hands-on work experience in diverse settings· helps students clarify vocational interests and create career options.

According to Canada’s Business/Higher Education Roundtable, work-integrated learning is a fundamental part of the Canadian undergraduate experience. Work-integrated learning has been a cornerstone of the CMU experience for nearly 20 years.

“My practicum placement at the Assiniboine Park Zoo has left me quite reassured that I’m headed in the right career direction. A practicum experience is very much a process of discovery and exploration, regardless of where you choose to do your practicum or where you find yourself.” Esther Derksen (Bachelor of Arts & Science major)

Vibrant Community Life

18

International StudentsCMU greatly values the addition of students from other countries and cultures who bring new perspectives and customs into the diverse CMU community. During the 2016–17 academic year, CMU had 78 international students from 25 different countries from around the world—Africa, Europe, Latin and South America, Asia, United States, and Australia.

Indigenous StudentsCMU supports Peguis First Nation's Post-secondary Indigenous Transition Program, housed on the CMU campus. Indigenous teachers lead this unique10-month program, which supports Indigenous students in their transition from reserve to an urban setting and from high school to post-secondary and career opportunities.

The CMU community reflects an expanding network of significant and diverse relationships. At CMU you will develop leadership skills, make friendships, and strengthen your academic experience and achievement.

95% of CMU students surveyed say that they would recommend CMU to others

Student Leadership Join Student Council, organize and participate in student-led events, and support a variety of initiatives. As a returning student, grow your leadership skills by serving as a Residence or Commuter Assistant.

Service Opportunities CMU students serve in the volunteer ranks of many local organizations. For example, the annual voluntary Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) trip during reading week provides an additional, unique opportunity to learn and serve.

Sustainable Community CMU faculty, staff, and students are committed to environmentally sound practices. A dedicated cycling community, a student-run campus bike co-op, and an on-campus organic farm attest to CMU’s “green” campus initiatives.

Peer-Assisted Learning At CMU, students help students through the PAL (peer-assisted learning) program. Stop by to get help with an essay or assignment from a student who can offer valuable insights and support.

Grow in Your FaithParticipate in chapel, fellowship groups, and Wednesday Night Worship. Join the forums and recitals that happen weekly on campus. Make use of the campus prayer rooms, as well as visit with a spiritual director or counsellor.

Life on campus offers unique opportunities to experience a supportive environment and develop lasting friendships. Each year, about 200 CMU students choose to expand their experience at the university by living in residence.

Receive personal support With university comes transition. Whether you live on-campus or are a commuter, there are Residence and Commuter Assistants as well as other Student Life staff who provide support and advice.

Develop great friendships It can be easier to meet people and make friends while living in residence. Often these develop into meaningful relationships that extend far beyond your years at university.

Enjoy flexible meal plans CMU’s dining hall is a popular meeting place for students throughout the day. Our staff provide a varied menu of healthy, home-style meals—nightly snack time is a highlight. Students can purchase meal plans offering full weekly meals or select flexible meal options to suit individual needs. Special dietary requirements are met through a personalized approach.

Be close to everything When you live on campus, you’re at the heart of the action. Campus events, student services, academic buildings, the library, and the fitness room are never far away.

Explore great housing optionsCMU’s campus includes double or single residence rooms, apartments, affordable parking fees, a locked bike shed, a pool table, foosball, TV lounges, and more. Find the right fit for you!

Winnipeg recently ranked in the top 10 most visited Canadian cities thanks to its many attractions. A cosmopolitan and multicultural city, Winnipeg offers an array of cultural experiences including Folklorama, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Winnipeg Folk Festival, and the Winnipeg Fringe Festival. Enjoy recreational activities such as skating the Assiniboine River ice trail, trips to some of the world’s best beaches—and, of course, cheering on the Winnipeg Jets and Winnipeg Blue Bombers!

The CMU campus boasts an art gallery, market garden, third-wave coffee shop, and is next door to Assiniboine Park, the Winnipeg Zoo, and North America’s largest urban forest which features walking and cycling trails.

In Nov., 2016, Narcity.com named folio café as one of the "15 Winnipeg coffee shops you should go to at least once in your life."

From their review:folio caféThis large, sunny space is usually flocked by CMU students (and their ability to make a single cappuccino last the entire three hours they spend studying is impressive). The cafe’s floor-to-ceiling windows look out onto the beautiful campus grounds, and I promise the study-hall vibes will make you feel shockingly studious (that, or tempted to skip class and order another vanilla latte).

"Our teams are like family—we really have each other’s back. My team is an amazing friend group—I have people that I can trust and that I can go to when I'm struggling in school or experiencing an issue. Competitive Conference PlayCMU is a founding member of the Manitoba Colleges Athletics Conference (MCAC) that includes six universities and colleges in Manitoba. A competitive conference schedule in women’s and men’s soccer, volleyball, and futsal is further enhanced by an out of province schedule that allows each CMU team to challenge themselves against other universities and colleges in Canada.

CMU’s men’s and women’s basketball squads also compete in the Northern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (NIAC) against nine other universities and colleges from Manitoba, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota.

Great FacilitiesVolleyball, basketball, and futsal home games take place on-campus at the 250 seat Loewen Athletic Centre. Recognized as one of the liveliest university gyms in Manitoba, CMU is known for creating an exhilarating playing experience for athletes and an exciting atmosphere for fans.

Though practices take place on campus, the site for CMU soccer games is the nearby Winnipeg Soccer Complex which has seating for 800 spectators and served as a training centre for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

An on-campus fitness room provides access to weight training and cardio equipment, and is accessible seven days a week.

What Faculty Say About CMU“ At CMU, I’ve been enriched by walking with

people who have different perspectives than I do. I’ve learned to listen and to build relationships, and not see those who view faith and life differently as a problem to fix, but rather as an opportunity to learn from and journey alongside.

Irma Fast Dueck, Associate Professor of Practical Theology

Getting our hands dirty, and working with multiple forms of inquiry that take context seriously, are radical acts characteristic of our commitment to education.

Kenton Lobe, Instructor, International Development Studies

I long for students to feel as though they’ve been challenged and pushed, but also nurtured along the way. I want students to feel that they have a voice and that they’ve had opportunity for that voice to develop and grow.

Janet Brenneman, Dean, School of Music; Associate Professor of Music

One of the things I appreciate is that at CMU, we have our four commitments: Educate for Peace – Justice; Learn through Thinking and Doing; Welcome Generous Hospitality… Radical Dialogue; and Model Invitational Community. To work at a place that’s seriously trying to make those sorts of things the undergirding aspect of an education is exciting.

DISCIPLESHIP SCHOOL

Outtatown’s mission is to inspire and nurture students in their life of discipleship with Jesus Christ in a journey towards: knowing God in truth and relationship; knowing yourself in personality, character, abilities, and gifts; and knowing the world in its beauty, diversity, and pain.

Students earn up to 18 university credits.

Become part of a community committed to learning what it means to follow Jesus in our world.

Travel. Learn. Serve.

Outtatown is for any student (age 17-22) with a high school diploma and the courage and willingness to dig deep and take risks. Students explore their faith, combining classroom and experiential learning with service, adventure, and travel.

You can choose one of Outtatown’s two-semester programs, which spend their international time in Guatemala or South Africa, or practice your French with our one-semester bilingual program that travels through France and Burkina Faso.

You will be inspired, encouraged, and challenged as you travel around the world.

“What I've learned on Outtatown gave me an incredible foundation to better use my gifts—gifts to further the church and to share the love of Jesus Christ with all.” Liam | Burkina Faso 2016

Guatemala: Journey through Latin culture and the Spanish language. Make new friends as you spend six weeks living with a Guatemalan family, take Spanish classes, and volunteer in various communities. Swim in the natural pools of Semuc Champey, hike up volcanoes or through Mayan ruins, and enjoy God’s creation.

South Africa: Learn from a variety of people groups throughout the country. Partner with local organizations as they serve their communities, and engage in dialogues about reconciliation and conflict resolution. Hike the Drakensburg Mountains, worship in local churches, and of course see a few wild animals along the way.

Burkina Faso: Journey across three continents while exploring the importance of the Church in Canadian, Parisian, and Burkinabé contexts. Practice your French with French speakers and your fellow travellers. Ride a camel in the Sahel Desert, share a coffee with someone on the streets of Montreal, visit the Eiffel Tower, and experience Burkinabé hospitality first hand—all in just three months.

Canada: All of our programs begin in Canada, whether it’s travelling east to Quebec with our Burkina Faso program, or from Manitoba to the coast of British Columbia with our two-semester programs. Much like their time internationally, students spend time learning in a classroom, serving at camps and in inner-cities, and pushing themselves with new adventures.

Travel. Learn. Serve.

Each international location we visit is unique.
