Discover the university town of Marburg!Marburg Stadt + Land (town + region) combines town, active and nature experiences, as well as meetings and health on really every level – from the Lahnaue through to Schlossberg, from Ebsdorfer-grund to Burgwald.

In Marburg, tourism, culture and history have always inspired one another. That’s been the case since the 13th century: It is here that the German order constructed the first Gothic hall church on German soil to honour St. Elisabeth, who died here in 1231. St. Elisabeth’s Church became a destination for pilgrims from all over the country – an early form of tourism.

By founding the university in 1527, Landgrave Philipp the Magnani-mous laid the foundation for the cosmopolitan university town with students and visitors from all over the world.

Emil von Behring, the first Nobel Prize winner in medicine and founder of the pharmaceutical company named after him, boosted conference and convention commerce with his connection to science and business.

“DISCOVER MARBURG” – the name says it all: This booklet will informatively accompany you through the university town of Marburg.

Do you want to EXPERIENCE, EXPLORE and LEARN more? – Ask for our free information brochure or look online: www.marburg-tourismus.de.

The way to the top

From the Lahn river through the historical old town and up to the castle: That’s 100 m elevation, two upper town lifts and 400 steps. Even the Brothers Grimm joked that in Marburg, there are “more steps on the streets than in the houses”.

GÄSTEFÜHRUNGEN

Tip from the mayor Dr Thomas SpiesThe university town of Marburg is like a history book written over the course of the centuries. And in the thick of it, in the historical market place, is the prestigious town hall [6] – as the centre of social, cultural and political life.

For more than 400 years now, there has been consistently amusing drama to be seen and heard every hour on the hour: On the town hall’s renaissance gable, the cock raises its wings to the messenger’s tinny craw.

Every Saturday, the weekly market invites you to take a stroll and shop and in the sunshine, the place really fills up with people gathering in the cafés and restaurants and around the fountain.

Elisabeth church

The earliest purely Gothic hall church with trefoil choir was con- structed in as little as 50 years, from 1235-83, as a church of St. Mary of the German Order of Knights and Burial Ground of the later Hessian landgraves above the grave of Saint Elisabeth of Thuringia. An important pilgrimage site during the Middle Ages, today a noteworthy building steeped in art history.

The stained glass windows show the life of Saint Elisabeth and her works of mercy and are counted among the most significant examples of Gothic glass work. The ornate golden Elisabeth shrine, adorned with gems, is also spectacular. Today, the protestant parish church is an outstanding monument of religious architec-ture and the destination of many tens of thousands visitors every year.

Landgrave Castle

The founding residence of the Hessian Landgrave was built as a castle to crown the land of the so-called “Gisonenfelsen” rocks. Origins date back to around 1000 whereby the Landgrave castle was counted among the first hill castles in Germany and the start-ing point for the development of Marburg.

Landgrave castle, princely residence, fortress – the Gothic and late Gothic structures with renaissance fixtures represent a unique, multifaceted history. The casemates located at the castle moat and park are evidence of this.

An important part of the castle, which is now in the possession of the university, is the university museum for cultural history which includes collections on Hesse’s pre and early history, religious art and civic urban living.

In summer, the beautiful castle park, the “3 days in Marburg” town festival and the open air cinema on the castle park stage are cen-tres of attraction for Marburg residents and its guests.

Philipp University of Marburg

The university, founded in 1527 by Landgrave Philipp the Mag-nanimous and thus the world’s first protestant university, shapes modern city life with over 26,500 students of medicine, natural sciences, humanities and social sciences. The science and medi-cine departments are primarily located on the Lahnbergen hills. Humanities and the university library will move from Krummbogen by the motorway to the new campus around the old botanical garden in the next few years.

The old university [5] was built in 1873-91 by Carl Schäfer in a neo-Gothic style on the foundation walls of the Dominican monastery from the late 13th century. The old auditorium located here offers a unique insight into the history of the university town of Marburg with its large-size historical paintings by Peter Janssen.

A tactile model of the former synagogue, glass panes for a view of the building’s relics and card indexes on the lawn turn your visit into a memorable experience.
