What Story Does Your Face Tell?

We don’t do facelifts – we do ImageLifts. Consider that a “facelift” can mean many things. Most often, people associate this with a clinical term. A facelift

is perceived by the lay public as sterile, technical, traditional, often overdone; it is about surgical anatomy; it has commonly been done in a hospital setting under general anesthesia, using drains and surgical staples, and requiring more downtime than most want to undergo. Is this about plastic surgery or a horror movie?

Kathy’s StoryKathy’s husband was asking for a divorce. When she came to my o# ce, Kathy looked older and more tired than her age of mid-fi fties. She was facing a major battle in her life, though you could still see the fi ght in her. Sophisticated and well put-together, she knew what she wanted, having obviously invested a great deal of time into researching her treatment options. When I prodded her to share some more about her background, I found out that Kathy had been married for over thirty years, during all of which she had been a homemaker.

Kathy began to get choked up at this point. “I’m here today because my husband left me,” she explained shakily.

“I’m sorry to hear that,” I told her.

“He has moved in with a younger woman, and I have to see him again in court in a few months,” she continued. “I need something for myself so I can face him again and move forward with my life. ! is past year has been very stressful.” She looked me straight in the eye and said, “I want to look more like the person whom I feel like on the inside.”

I wondered whether Kathy was more interested in building her self-confi dence that had been shattered from this ultimate rejection, or whether she just wanted revenge on her husband to show him what a hot and good-looking woman he was missing out on!

Kathy built her whole life around her husband and their marriage, never dreaming that she would be single again, dating, or much less have to enter the workplace. ! e dating scene can be frightening to women of any age. Any kind of trauma or signifi cant stress can indeed age a person, and Kathy was no exception. Just as we go through “growth spurts,” we can also have “aging spurts” during trying times. Her inner voice began to prompt her to take action, and she recognized that adaptation was necessary to start a new life and construct an identity apart from her soon-to-be ex-husband.

Even though this wasn’t the fi rst time I heard the story of someone’s long-term marriage ending, I still get excited when I see the opportunity to help someone achieve his or her dream of a more youthful appearance and emotional identity. In cases such as Kathy’s, it is important to clarify that the procedure would not undo the personal trauma she had endured. It is critical that patients have realistic expectations about what can be accomplished with these treatments. ! e opportunity to help Kathy feel better about herself and take charge of her life was a special gift that I felt proud to be a part of. One month after her procedure, she came to greet me with a big hug. “I still look like myself, just ten years younger!” She was thrilled with her results, and we brought in almost the whole o# ce to see her amazing before and after pictures.

Research has shown that when we are happy with our appearance, our self-confi dence and self-esteem is higher, which can translate into being happier and more e" ective in what we do. ! is is one of my favorite quotes, and I believe it totally. Maxwell Maltz says, “Self-Image is the key to human personality and human behavior. Change the self-image, and you change the personality and behavior.”

Women know this intuitively. When a woman goes to a salon or hairdresser, she feels better about herself. Isn’t that true? As we said earlier, we live in a visual society, and people make decisions about us within seconds of meeting us, especially in the dating game. Kathy is just another example of how a youthful appearance can infl uence our self-confi dence in a positive manner.

Keep Your Partner GuessingFinding “the one” does not give you permission to slack o" , especially where your appearance is concerned. Sexual attraction is part of a healthy relationship, and couples who do their best to preserve this component have a much better chance of going the distance. If you have been in a relationship for a substantial period of time, you have obviously both aged since the early days of your courtship. However, keep in mind that the one you fell in love with sees the face he or she fi rst saw those ten or twenty years ago. Following that logic, the closer you can keep your real facial image to the memory of your younger face, the better.

The Longtime Lovers

Ed and Mary Ed and Mary had been married for forty years and were still very much in love when I met them. Today, relationships like theirs are not as common as they should be, so I was interested to know how they made it work for such a long period of time. When I asked them what their secret was, Ed answered without hesitation.

“Mary makes it so easy; she is such a wonderful and beautiful person.” You could tell that Ed still did it for Mary. She basked in the glow of his

adoration and smiled like a little girl. ! ey seemed to complement each other perfectly.

Ed and Mary came to us wanting to look younger. Clearly, they still wanted to please each other. Mary was eager to discuss potential treatments for her neckline, which was the area she wanted to improve upon. After deciding on a small ImageLift and laser treatment of the face, we turned our attention to Ed’s concerns.

Many women help their husbands with fashion, hairstyles, and grooming, and this trend actually extends to cosmetic procedures and treatments as well. When I asked Ed what his goals were, he turned to Mary.

“Honey, what are my goals?” he queried with a smile.It was clear from his response that Mary was the one who had instigated

Why Do We Do This?We love getting to know our patients, and more than once during a procedure, I have had patients ask me if I get tired or bored doing the same procedures over and over again. While I am performing their treatment is a great time to tell them that it will absolutely push me over the edge if I have to do another facial procedure – and we laugh it o" together. We also tell our patients that we can do much more than face treatments to keep it interesting. When you pull really hard with the ImageLift, we have noticed that the tummy tightens and the breasts and bottom lift a bit as well too (well, not really, but it is fun to talk about)!

My daughter Ella loves to draw and create artwork, and I tell her that daddy gets to do artwork at the o# ce every single day. Consider the patterns we get into in life. Relationships, jobs, family – sometimes we get stuck in a pattern or expectation, and we can feel like victims of our circumstance. Society will often tell us how to act once we get to a certain age, though our goals for an increased quality of life may lead us in di" erent directions. People yearn to break these patterns in their lives. Patterns are very helpful to us, they are e# cient and e" ective at conserving our brain energy with the multitude of tasks we complete every day. Consider the pattern we all have when driving home. Have you ever had the experience of driving home realizing you have arrived at your destination, and not recalled how exactly you got there? And did you run any stop-lights or stop-signs or knock over any garbage cans while your brain was on cruise control? We get stuck in our patterns and they become a rut!

Here’s another good example: have you ever noticed the pattern of how we look at ourselves? Have you ever noticed how we tend to look at the same things when we see our face? Do we say the same things to ourselves, and even feel the same way when we look at our refl ection? Would you say that this can be a rut? Many of our patients do.

Consider Dale’s picture. She just turned seventy years old and her mother is ninety. Can you imagine what Dale’s pattern is when she looks into the mirror? Can you see what she may focus on, or hear what she may say to herself considering how she has lost her youth? And what feelings does this inspire within?

giving to others, serving and supporting as much as we may. ! e more you do, the more you can do. Yet, can we really fi ll other people up when our

cup is empty? If you truly want to serve others, take the time to serve yourself fi rst.

! ink very carefully about this, and consider the voice we have in our head that tells us what we should or shouldn’t do. We often hear that voice telling us we are selfi sh for not spending the money on family, or asking why we need such extravagances. Instead of

giving into guilty feelings, consider that being selfi sh is being smart when you do it the right way. Our patients see ImageLift as an opportunity to invest in themselves in a way that they most appreciate. Investing in oneself is the most important reason one should elect to enhance and feel good about one’s facial appearance.

AfterimagesDo you know what an afterimage is? Allow us to demonstrate with thirty seconds of your time. Simply look at this unusual image viewed as a negative of the photo. You must stare at the dot in the middle for thirty seconds straight – if you come and go or do it for less than thirty seconds, this will not work. AFTER you are done looking at the image, to receive the e" ect, you must look at a nearby wall for a few seconds and you will see a surprise!

To view the afterimage, follow these instruc-tions carefully: Stare at only one point in the center of this picture for a full 30 seconds. No looking away! After 30 seconds, look away to a white wall for a few moments. What do you see?

Now that you have looked at the image for thirty seconds, and looked away to a wall, isn’t it amazing what you see?!? ! is phenomenon is called the “AfterImage.” What you have witnessed is a very powerful way how the mind works and learns.

When you look at something long enough, that image or pattern will stay in your brain in some way, shape, or form. What is amazing about afterimages is that, in some circumstances, your mind will see things that aren’t really there anymore. Just like your mind saw the afterimage when you stopped looking at the image and looked at the wall. ! is happens in other areas of life, and sometimes we can get stuck in our afterimages, even if they aren’t consistent with what is going on in reality.

Now, consider how your mind forms an afterimage of your facial appearance from when you were a child looking at your face. Have you ever considered that your mind forms an afterimage of who you are? It is fascinating to see that our mental afterimage of our face may not change that much, while our physical facial appearance actually does change with age. When our actual physical appearance and mental afterimage are so di" erent from one another, our mind will say, “Wait a minute, what has happened! When did that wrinkle show up? When did I get my mother’s/father’s eyes or neck?!?” ! is is often a painful moment to endure this realization.

Our afterimages are very powerful, and they help us to shape our self-image. Have you considered what your afterimages are of your appearance? We actually form afterimages for any stimuli that are intense enough or sustained for a long enough period of time.
