Well this is either ‘hello again’ or ‘welcome’ depending where you are in Hedge End, Botley or West End. This magazine was The Southampton Directory for a couple of years, and then earlier this year changed to Discover Hedge End which is of course its name now. However, even with the name change we didn’t feel we had our distribution coverage quite right, and so with some planning and a lot of map peering we’ve now settled on the areas of Hedge End, West End and Botley as the communities into which we are delivering this publication. So you may have seen us before or this magazine may be new to you. We print monthly alternating between two areas so you’ll receive your copy every other month.I talk of ‘we’ as if there was a big corporation behind the scenes, but far from it! Just two of us on the business full-time – Melanie who manages sales, marketing and distribution, and me (Tania) managing editorial, artwork and accounts. But there’s a small army of other people who help out part-time: Heather, our (talented and incredibly patient) designer, Jill our administrator, Kevin who chases the late-payers and our wonderful local distribution team who get the magazine through your door, whatever the weather.

REACH 100,000 HOMES AND BUSINESSESwww.discovermagazines.co.uk/advertising

Hello and Welcome

Our aim is to be a resource for householders, featuring businesses, useful numbers, supermarkets hours and events taking place in and around the area. We also include editorial of interest to all – children’s and adult's puzzles pages, beauty, motoring, business tips and a recipe if we have space. But we do love printing local news and views – we just need you to send it in. Are you doing a marathon for charity? Do you have something to say about development in the area? Is your child’s school doing something for the community? If you have news to share, please send it in.

Tania

PS: As you’ll see from the logos at the bottom of the pages, we do cover other areas too, and offer great deals for advertising in our magazines.

Community First Responders in Hedge End Volunteers WantedA Community First Responder (CFR) is a person available to be dispatched by an ambulance control centre in their local area. CFRs provide assistance in a medical emergency and most importantly to start and maintain the chain of survival in cardiac arrest patients until a fully equipped ambulance arrives. In the case of cardiac arrest, for every minute that passes without cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation a patient's chances of survival decreases by 14%.

CFRs use life-saving skills, such as the use of the automated external defibrillator (AED), to provide early and often vital intervention for patients suffering life-threatening emergencies in the immediate vicinity of where they live or work. Once an ambulance crew arrives at the scene, CFRs work alongside a clinically qualified practitioner.

How do they know what to do?Community First Responders are trained to provide life-saving treatment at a recognised level and they are always backed up with the nearest available ambulance. Every six months, there is a compulsory training to refresh skills. There is also an opportunity for CFRs to have monthly refresher training on skills or treatment.

Help NeededThe success of the scheme depends on two factors: firstly people volunteering to be CFRs and secondly fundraising and donations to support the efforts. You can give as much or little time to help the CFR as you have available. Interested in helping? Telephone 0800 587 0207 or email [email protected] now.

Library Longer Opening HoursFrom Wednesday 3 October 2012, the Hedge End library will remain open all day on Wednesdays until 5pm, increasing its weekly opening time by four hours. The County Council, Hedge End Town Council and Eastleigh Borough Council funded the library’s recent refurbishment and the installation of self-service terminals, in turn freeing up the time of staff. The work, completed in June, cost £50,000 in total and included an interior makeover, new carpets, books and fresh furniture. Following this, Hedge End Town Council and Hampshire County Council worked together to recruit volunteers from the local community to work alongside staff, enabling the library to increase its opening hours on a Wednesday. The volunteers will be able to help customers use the self-service kiosks and the public computers, while library staff will continue to provide the full range of services, from answering enquiries, maintaining a good range of stock and providing fun and engaging activities for children. For more information please visit - www3.hants.gov.uk/library/hedge-end-library.htm

Vet’s Tip:With warmer winters and central heating, fleas are a year round problem. The little horrors get onto your pet and into your home causing problems ranging from sore bites to skin irritation, infections, hair loss and anaemia.A female flea can lay 50 or more eggs a day. These fall off your pet and are deposited around the house in carpets and bedding where they can remain dormant for many months before developing via larval and pupal stages into adult fleas. In just a few weeks two fleas can multiply into several thousand.By contrast ticks live in woodland and heathland waiting to attach themselves to passing pets. Once attached they feed on your pet's blood. Ticks cause two problems. Firstly they can cause a tissue reaction at the attachment site and secondly they can transmit diseases such as Lyme disease and Babesiosis.Contact your vet for advice on prevention and treatment of pet pests.

Seasonal Recipe

Autumn PuddingPlace the sugar and 200ml of cold water in a large pan and heat gently until the sugar has dissolved. Add the sliced apples and simmer for 5-10 minutes until just tender. Add the rest of the fruit and simmer for a further 2-3 minutes. Leave to cool.

Remove the crusts from the bread slices. Use a round cookie cutter to stamp out a circle from one slice of bread to fit the base of a 1.2 litre pudding basin. Cut the remaining slices of bread in half.

Carefully strain half of the fruit syrup from the cooled fruit into a shallow dish. Lightly dip most of the slices of bread into the syrup and arrange around the side of the pudding basin, overlapping them slightly to completely line the basin. Dip the bread circle into the syrup and press into the bottom of the basin.

Spoon the fruit into the lined basin, pressing down gently with the back of a spoon. Use the remaining slices of bread to cover the fruit filling completely and spoon over any remaining syrup.

Place a saucer on top of the basin and weigh it down with 2-3 food cans. Chill in the fridge overnight. To serve, carefully turn the pudding out onto a plate and decorate with extra sliced fruit.

Serves 6Ready in 1 hour(plus overnight chilling)

Try this variation on summer pudding making the most of the early Autumn fruits, such as plums, blackberries and delicious English apples. Serve with

softly whipped double cream flavoured with a splash of Calvados for a really

We’ve all felt the impact that scent can have in our lives - a momentary waft of a familiar smell can instantly evoke memories of a certain person, time, place or stage of life. Our sense of smell is so compelling that it allows us to unlock forgotten moments stored away deep within our minds in an instant. Indeed fragrance seems to have a magical ability to affect our mood - lifting our spirits, making us feel good about ourselves, as well as happy and contented. It also defines people - we remember their fragrance long after we’ve forgotten their clothes, or even their looks. This is why it’s so important to find a fragrance that you love, and to make it your own signature scent. There are thousands of perfumes on the market nowadays - fashion brands, designers and even celebrities have their own fragrances on offer, and many smell very similar to the untrained nose. But, chances are you instantly know what you like, and what you don’t. This is because scents are categorised according to ‘notes’ - characteristics that define overall similarities. And we all, knowingly or unknowingly, tend to be drawn to a particular ‘fragrance family’.

Fresh - Scents described as ‘Fresh’ often contain a blend of ‘green’ notes that are evocative of things like spring-time, citrus fruits and freshly-cut grass. The overall scent is light, clean and refreshing.

Floral - Encompassing a multitude of aromas taken from flowers, this family’s fragrance is totally floral. With inspiration drawn from the scent of a single bloom, or a vast bouquet, ‘Floral’ fragrances can contain notes of rose, lily

of the valley, jasmine, cherry blossom, honey flower, violets and many more. These fragrances can be sweet or powdery.

Oriental - Extravagantly exotic, ‘Oriental’ scents are often formed with notes of amber and vanilla. Known for their sensual fragrance, Orientals tend to be ‘heavier’ than other groups and are altogether more powerful fragrances.

Chypre (or Woods) - Inspired by the ‘woody’ fragrance of oak, sandlewood, cedarwood and moss, this family is heavily aromatic and masculine - many of these notes are used in men’s fragrance. Patchouli, vetiver and pine lift the woody notes, for a crisp scent.

It’s a great feeling to find your signature fragrance. And once you discover what elements make it perfect for you, you can buy a range of scents within that family that are different variations on the one you love. This means that your favourite fragrance can be adapted for various occasions, seasons or even for day and night.

Shortly after taking office as Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown said that he intended to free Britain from the cycle of ‘boom and bust’. What a vote winning proposition; most of us would be willing to forgo a boom if it meant the economy was on a bit more of a level and our current lifestyle was assured.

10 years later during his short tenure as Prime Minister he was eating his words. The economy was sliding towards a recession and the downturn was worse than in the Conservative days.

All economies are prone to boom and bust and whilst not totally understood, there is one major factor that is acknowledged and it’s this: Our economy exists because there are human beings buying, selling and using, and we are emotional creatures. We can swing very quickly from optimism to pessimism, spendthrift to miser and vice versa.

So a government could implement even a small economic tweak e.g. an interest rate rise, with the aim of slowly deflating the balloon rather than popping it, and the markets and the general public can react to an unanticipated degree – either negatively or positively. The press, full of articles written by humans, loves to do a bit of doom mongering and can influence our behaviour.

Some say that human experience is also an important factor. Say ten years ago you were 30 and borrowed money on credit cards and from banks. At 40 you are still struggling to repay that debt having seen a downturn in your income. In 10 years more if your income returned to the same relative level as when you were 30, there’s just no way you’ll take out big borrowings again. Give it 30 years more though, and a new generation won’t have that previous experience to learn from and a new boom will go off.

Throw in a few unpredicted events too e.g. 9/11,

and all economies struggle to stabilise.

Clearly we are not in a boom at the moment. But it’s been a few years since the economy first went into recession and few years more than that when growth started to slow. Whilst nobody would be brave enough to predict that we are at or near the bottom of the curve yet, you could say we are nearer to going back up than we were a while back.

What a recession does do though is to consolidate. Those that run a good business (selling something people want, offering a good service, and having efficient processes and systems) will survive, while their competitors will be forced out. This in turn reduces the competition in the market, meaning what business is around has fewer people going after it. The point being: make sure you tick all the boxes.

Undoubtedly though it’s a tougher market out there so keeping your eye on growing – or at least maintaining - your business is essential. For example, if you are a small business, how often do you email people you’ve done business with before? They are far more likely to buy than a brand new cold prospect because they know you and they trust you. But they might have forgotten about you and it’s your job to remind them.

clean out of any unneeded kit in your car and stash it away in your garage instead.

CHECK IT OUTWhen your car is serviced regularly it’s not only less likely to break down, but it’ll be more environmentally friendly too. Good quality oil, fresh spark plugs and air filters are all essential – neglect any and your fuel consumption will be worse and your carbon footprint higher.

PLAN AHEADUsing sat nav is not only a great way to make motoring less stressful, but it’s green too! By avoiding getting lost and taking the most direct route to your destination you’ll cut fuel bills. Use one with traffic jam detecting capability and you’ll cut CO2 even more.

AT YOUR SERVICEEven things as simple as insurance, breakdown cover and vehicle inspections can be green. The Environmental Transport Association provides all of them in a carbon neutral way.

GREEN OPTIONTry a fuel saving tyre – such as the Michelin Energy or Firestone Fuel Saver – which claim to reduce fuel consumption by adding silica to their compounds. And you could try ‘green’ cleaning products, like the CarPlan EcoCar range which offers a host of environmentally-friendly products derived from vegetable and plant extracts.

DISCOVER MOTORING

by James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)

There are some eco-warriors out there who believe the humble automobile is the devil on wheels. But in recent years car manufacturers have worked hard to change the car’s planet killing image with hybrids, electric vehicles and fuel-sipping eco models like VW’s Bluemotion range. But what if you can’t afford a new car and still want to go green? Well, fortunately there are ways you can cut your carbon footprint – and it doesn’t have to mean walking!Planning trips to coincide with one another, not going out especially to buy fuel, and sharing a commute can all help. But it’s not just about how and when you use your motor – just as important is the way it’s looked after. Here are our practical tips to make car ownership greener.

CHANGE YOUR STYLENo one likes to be told how to drive – but if there’s one guaranteed way of slashing your CO2 output it’s by changing your driving habits. Avoid harsh acceleration and braking, drive with the windows up to avoid drag and remove any unused extras such as roof racks. Stick to the speed limits and change up at the most economical point – roughly 2,500rpm for petrols and 2,000rpm for diesels. And think about switching off the engine if you’re going to be stationary for more than two minutes

IN A LATHERA clean car might be a pretty car, but do you need to do it every week? If you really must spruce it up, use a bucket and sponge instead of a hose to save water or cut it out completely with a waterless cleaning agent like Miracle Drywash which lifts dirt with a cloth.

SPRING CLEANCarrying around your golf clubs and a set of tools can seriously inflate your fuel consumption – 100kg of unnecessary extra weight can increase it by as much as six per cent. Have a

Argonaut Community EnterprisesArgonaut is celebrating the end of its second year this September. Established by Stephen Dering and Gill Winstanley who are both deaf, Argonaut is a not for profit social firm that delivers cleaning, gardening, plumbing and electrical services to homes across South Hampshire. What makes Argonaut unique is that all the employees have a disability from deafness to learning disability to cerebral palsy. “Our staff value the real work opportunities that we are able to give them,” says Gill. “Many will be have been out of work for a long time and lack the confidence to do well in job interviews.”Gardener Richard has never worked since leaving college despite holding qualifications because of his learning disabilities and there was no support to find work. Yet he is part of the Argonaut’s Gardening team in demand in across Portsmouth, Southampton, Fareham and Meon Valley.Cleaner Julie from Hedge End was lacking in confidence and would not travel far from her home. “I started working at Argonaut in September 2011. My new job involved working

with different customers and I was nervous about meeting new people. My confidence has improved a lot for part of my job I visit peoples homes and communicate with different people every day. I learned to try and communicate in different ways so that customers can understand me.” “I was also not confident about going to new places by bus, train or even driving. Thanks to Argonaut I am beginning to feel more confident about getting around independently.” The more work that Argonaut can take on, the more local disabled people that will be able to benefit from the same opportunities that Jase and Catherine have had.

At an impressive 250 metres long it is believed to be the longest Double Border in the country and possibly Europe. A key element of the new design is the stunning white granite paving which provides a front edge detail to the beds. Importantly it also allows visitors to enjoy the border all year round and in all weather conditions. Together with the Art in the Garden displays (up to 30th Oct), a trip to the Gardens makes for a wonderful day out. www3.hants.gov.uk/hilliergardens.

DISCOV ER G A R D E N I N G

Tulips are amazingly good value and have the potential to transform your flower beds and tubs next spring with their silken-petalled, strikingly coloured blooms.Late PlantingTulip bulbs are best planted from the last half of October and well in to November. Plant too early and the bulbs will be far more prone to damage by the fungal ‘tulip fire’ disease which wrecks the leaves and flowers.Gritty BedIf your garden soil is inclined to be clay and rather heavy, tulips may suffer and are certainly less likely to come back after their first wet winter. A heavy loam works well but anything that isn’t well drained may cause problems. You can solve this to a good extent by digging an extra large planting hole and putting an inch or two of horticultural gravel or grit in the base of the hole before planting the bulb. Don’t use grit or gravel left over from the local building site, as this often contains salts and other contaminants which may harm or kill garden plants.Contained ColourTulips make great plants for containers such as window boxes, tubs and decent-sized pots and planters. Shorter varieties generally look best (check the front of the pack or catalogue for heights). Good drainage is essential so make sure that there are plenty of crocks in the base of the container and that it’s well supplied with drainage holes. Try either a loam-free multi-purpose compost or mix 50:50 a loam-based compost and a bit of added grit.Fantastic FoliageMany tulips also have good looking foliage which can help to bring colour and texture to your pots and beds. Try the Kaufmanniana types such as ‘Johann Strauss’(dark red flowers with yellow edges and mottled leaves), or even better the Greigii type tulips which all have maroon patterning on the leaves, such as ‘Red Riding Hood’ (richest red with black). by Pippa Greenwood

Tulip PartnersRichest red tulips surrounded by a mist of pale blue forget-me-nots are dreamily pretty. This wonderful combination is easy to achieve; you can sow the forget-me-not seed now, as you plant the bulbs, or if you prefer sow them early in the year, just before the bulbs emerge. The display you achieve will be breathtakingly beautiful.Long-lived LoveliesIn most gardens tulips are not the longest living bulbs, however you can always try growing the so-called species tulips such as Tulipa sprengeri or Tulipa turkestanica. They have smaller, less-showy flowers and will be considerably more expensive initially but they look gorgeous, tend to last longer and, better still, also spread extensively in the right spot. After a few years a carpet of species tulips can be achieved, and will take your breath away.Good CompanionsTulips look great with each other. Try combining the richly purple-black leaved Pittosporum ‘Tom Thumb’ with any purple tulip such as ‘Passionale’, or for a wackier effect chose one of the frilly petalled parrot-tulips with green streaks on their petals, or the green ‘spring green’ tulip, combined with any low-growing shrub. Now is the best time of year to think tulips - start planting and transform your garden for spring.Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com. While there, visit the new products area for a great selection including signed copies of Pippa’s books, Grower Frames, cloches, pop-up plant cloches, raised bed kits, delightful terracotta herb planters and wall plaques, Nemaslug and other natural pest controls and lots, lots more! You can also sign up for Pippa’s newsletter and get a free ebook on organic gardening.
