In an effort to bring awareness of the resources available to wounded, ill and injured service members, the Department of Defense (DOD) has deemed November as Warrior Care Month. This year’s theme is “Show of Strength,” which focuses on the continuum of care for Soldiers- starting with recovery, rehabilitation, and reintegration back to duty or on to civilian life. One organization among many that provides care for wounded, ill and injured Soldiers and their Families, is the Army Community Service Soldier and Family Assistance Centers (SFACs).

SFACs are one-stop resource centers built to equip and aid wounded, ill, and injured Soldiers who are assigned or attached to Warrior Transition Units (WTUs). Key services include, help with education plans, benefits review, financial counseling, social services, information and referral, and child care services. SFACs also house Soldier for Life (SFL) employment counselors who assist transitioning Soldiers with opportunities to prepare for life after the Army. Key partners such as the Veterans Affairs OEF/OIF counselors, medical ombudsmen, Veteran Affairs Vocational Rehabilitation counselors, and Disabled American Veterans Service Officer also provide services at the SFAC.

“Warrior Care month is a great time to bring attention to the many programs and services offered to our wounded, ill and injured Soldiers that have given so much,” said Hank Cashen, SFAC Director for U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii.

“Our facilities provide a warm, relaxed environment where Soldiers and their Families can gather to foster physical, spiritual, and mental healing.”

USAG Hawaii along with Army Garrisons worldwide will host special events throughout the month in conjunction with WTUs, SFACs and the local community.

ARMY COMMUNITY SERVICE

USAG Hawaii let your voice be heard! Join us at our annual AFAP Conference Nov. 16 & 17, 2015 from

8 AM to 12 PM at the Nehelani Banquet & Conference Center, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

AFAP FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

What is AFAP? AFAP allows all members of the Army Community to be “Agents of Change”! AFAP is a grassroots program that allows the total Army

Community - active and reserve component Soldiers, Family Members, Department of the Army (DA) Civilians, retirees, and survivors - to identify,

develop, and elevate DA-level quality of life issues to Senior Army Leadership. Examples of past successful AFAP issues are: Paternity Leave

for Soldiers, Service Members Group Life Insurance increases, Transfer of the Post 9 / 11 GI Bill to dependents, and establishment of the Better

Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS) Program.

I’ve heard this year’s AFAP Conference will be different than what I’m used to. How is it different?

This year, the Army as a whole is using AFAP to focus primarily on soliciting DA-level quality of life issues and developing recommendations to address them. DA-level issues are those that may involve changes to Army policy and regulations.

The idea is to resolve issues at the lowest level so all issues will first be evaluated for resolution by local service providers or through the Garrison Commander.

What if I have an issue that affects the U.S Army Hawaii community only?

There are plenty of ways for the voice of the local community to be heard! U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii has several programs in place to ensure that community members have a voice, including the Interactive Customer

Evaluation system and the “Ask the Garrison Commander” initiative. More information about the various avenues to provide local community feedback can be found here: http://www.garrison.hawaii.army.mil/crmt/default.htm.

How can I “Be an Agent of Change”?You can submit DA-level quality of life issues online at http://www.himwr.com/getting-involved/army-family-action-plan. If you don’t have an issue but want to get involved, the AFAP Conference also needs volunteers to serve as Delegates, Facilitators, Recorders/Transcribers, and Issue Support persons. Contact the AFAP

Program Manager at Army Community Service for more information!

When is the next AFAP Conference? Nov. 16 & 17, 2015 from 8 AM to 12 PM at the Nehelani Banquet &

Conference Center, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

Where can I find additional information? More information is available from the Army Family Action Plan

website http://www.himwr.com/getting-involved/army-family-action-plan or you can contact the Army Community Service AFAP Program

Manager at (808) 655-4ACS.
