““Where there is no vision the people will perish?” ~Proverbs 29:18. A little over a year ago, Sierra Presbyterian Church entered into a Church Revitalization process. We invited a member of the Go Vision! Team to come out and lead a Church Revitalization Workshop for us to assess where we are as a church and to give us an opportunity to catch a vision from God for reaching our community. Nearly 80 people attended that initial workshop. Soon after, we formed a vision team who began to prayerfully search scripture to see how the general revelation of God might intersect with our church’s unique gifts and our community’s

unique needs. We gathered prayer partners and pulled the church together to follow-up on areas of interest such as Healthy Living and Lifestyle, Ministering to Seniors, and Mentoring Families, Youth and Children. Gathering people’s input and opening ourselves up to opportunities that presented themselves in our neighborhood and through organizations that we have previously connected, like Kare Crisis Nursery, brought some confirmation. We have followed the adage that we heard at the initial workshop, of Ready, Fire, Aim! Trying a number of different things to get engaged and then seeing where God would have us focus. Through a ministry we are calling Sidekicks, we are preparing people to serve as mentors for families, youth, and children in our community. We will be having a Sidekick Launch Dinner Party on Thursday, March 8, at 6 pm to celebrate and help people prepare to enter into such relationships and one of our LINC (Love in Nevada County) outreach activities the weekend of April 28-29 will be a community dinner for members of our community interested in being connected with one of our Sidekick mentors.

The neat thing is that as we are preparing to do this for members of our community, we caught a vision for first doing this for our own children and youth. In January we launched 24 mentor pairings with a caring adult being linked up with the kids who were going through their Discover Your Bible Class and youth that are going through the BASE (Biblical and Spiritual Essentials) material. It was a joy to see these adults linked up with children and youth.

We have also experienced revitalization among our children and youth in other ways. This month we are launching a Student Leadership Team in which six of our students whom applied will serve to provide leadership for the Ankor Youth Ministry on Wednesday evenings, Sunday night in partnership with The Gathering and Sierra Kids Club. We are also preparing to offer two Summer Youth Internships in order to further develop leaders among younger generations. Session has approved these internships that will be supported through youth ministry funds both in order to make a difference in the lives of our youth but also to make a difference in the lives of these young adult leaders and our congregation itself who will support them.

As we are making a kingdom investment through mentoring and investing in younger generations, we are also following up on other areas of stated interest. At our next I.F. (Intergenerational Fellowship) on Saturday, March 24, Drew Speroni will be offering his excellent seminar on Healthy Living and Lifestyle.

Finally, we have felt the need to offer further training to equip the congregation to serve our

community in order to build relationships and share the gospel. Sunday morning Adult Spiritual Development Classes in the month of March will be facilitated by members of our Go Vision! Team and will focus on such topics as Missional Living, Gospel Fluency-Growing in our ability to share God’s story, having Christ-centered conversations and extending good invitations. We encourage you to participate in these classes and catch a vision for how God can use you to make disciples of people in our community.

If you ever wondered if teenagers’ voices and actions can make an impact in our world for change, just take a look at the headlines in the wake of the Valentine’s Day school shooting in Florida last month. When I was in high school my greatest fear was that the students who were tougher than I would pick on me, I cannot imagine what young people today experience in the wake of these all too common occur-rences. That said, we are excited for a new component of our Ankor program—the newly-launched Student Leadership Team. The six students chosen, Kennedy Blake, Drew LaFerriere, Autumn Legge,

Morgan Rumpler, Sam Schmidt and Danielle Schnitzius, have all acknowledged their faith in Jesus and their desire to live in such a way to impact their peers and others for Him. They have committed to regular participation in and planning for Ankor events, to attend leadership meetings and invest in a ministry outside of Ankor as well. It is exciting to see how this will manifest itself through the lives of these young people. The adults that have spent much time, prayer and effort to get this off the ground are: Renee Adams, Beth Griffin and Jeff McClelland. This same three are also working to develop the session-approved hire of two summer interns this year for Ankor Youth Ministry. More to come on this, but if you know of a college student with a passion for teenagers who is looking for a meaningful summer, let one of them or the other youth staff know. During March we will be having our Winter Retreat for the purpose of spiritual growth with some fun in the snow thrown in. On Wednesday’s we will complete our teaching on the Biblical and Spiritual Essentials, BASE curriculum. Mentoring relationships formed as a part of this season continue. Lastly, planning is underway for our summer camp week in June to Hume Lake so there will be a fund-raising opportunity this month as well.

Sierra Kids Children’s Ministry 5

The kids, mentor buddies and Mike and I had a great experience with the Bible class that concluded at the beginning of February. The connections made between the kids and the mentors have been sweet to watch and we are confident that those relationships will continue on. In January, we started something new on Sunday mornings where one of the students gets chosen each week for me to bring them lunch at their school from their favorite fast food restaurant. This has been a lot of fun for me, the kids are very excited and I’ve been able to connect with their friends too. I have also started to do a chapel time with the Sonshine Preschool children twice a month, once on a Wednesday and once on a Thursday. What fun it has been to spend some time with those sweet kiddos. We are excited for the opportunity to have some elementary students attend summer camp at Hume Lake this year. Those students will be participating in the next few fundraisers to help them raise the money for camp. One of our fundraisers, which will take place on multiple dates, will be an art show sale. On Sunday nights at Sierra Kids Club, all of the students—children and youth—have been creat-ing artwork that will be displayed and available to purchase. Be looking for more information about those dates. Because Jesus Loves Kids, Stacey

Sonshine Preschool

Sonshine Preschool has been off to a great start for 2018! The new year has been all about giving and receiving love and kindness. The students gave love and kindness through making meals for a friend in need and through their service project titled “Operation Giddy-Up Sparky!” Sonshine’s alumnus, 5 year old Liam Meenan, provided the inspiration for the project. This February, Liam began collecting items for the Oroville Dam evacuees who were staying at the Nevada County Fairgrounds since he remem-bered making Valentine’s Day cards for them last year. Liam did not realize that the evacuees have been back in their homes for nearly a year now. Liam’s love and kindness inspired Sonshine’s teachers and students to collect helpful items for some of our area’s homeless population; things like gloves, chapstick, hats, socks, etc. Once the items were collected, a group of men from Sierra Presbyterian delivered the items to the homeless. During this time of love and kindness, Sonshine Preschool also received love and kindness from a couple of parent volunteers who graciously gave their time to rake pine needles from the playground and install window shades in the classrooms.

The students also had fun spending some time outside these past couple of months. In January, the students went on a snow walk as it began snowing a bit during one school day. Then, in February, the students enjoyed some unexpected warm weather by working the garden area in the playground and having some outside nap time during one of the extra warm, sunny days. All in all, it has been a great January and February!

Prayer And Healing

Gusty March Winds Have the winds of life tossed you about and left you tangled and confused? Prayer Warriors can help you pray to get things sorted out and back in order. They are available to pray with you for any concerns or needs of healing. Prayer teams are available after each service on Sundays. They are stationed in front of the sanctuary on the 3

rd Sunday of the month and in the Prayer Room on other Sundays. Other prayer

times are available upon request. Contact Dave and Linda Anderson, Prayer Team Leaders. A SPECIAL REQUEST In some cases, people let us know when they have received answered prayer. What a pow-erful testimony! If you have received prayer from one of the prayer teams, they would love to hear from you again if you feel that your prayers has been answered or how they can continue to pray for you. Re-member all prayer is kept in strict confidentiality.—Submitted by Selma Wright

HOPE Team & Décor Team Update THE HOPE TEAM: This was formed in 2006 when seven women decided that the Ryosa kitchen badly needed remodeling. There was a freak accident that badly burned the leg of one of the ladies while pre-paring for a Hospitality House dinner that evening. We were fortunate that she recovered but we knew that the 1970 era kitchen was too small and dated. It also had cracked flooring and counter tops which were not sanitary. It was crowded if more than two people were working in it, and another accident could easily happen. There was no money for remodeling, so these resourceful ladies decided to do Garden Tours, Seated Teas for 126 Ladies and a cookbook to earn money. They named themselves The Hope Team (Helping Other People Eat) and these fundraisers went on until 2014. This is how the coffee and beverage room was funded. These funds, plus donations from the craft fair food booth and generous gifts from our congregation, are what finally funded our kitchen expansion. THE DÉCOR TEAM: The people who had been doing the seasonal decorating of the sanctuary/lobby moved out of the area. As we had been decorating for teas, the same seven ladies felt strongly that God was calling them to take on this job. Our church needed to continue expressing a hospitable and welcom-ing environment to our congregation and guests. Some have had the misconception that we also did Ryosa. The sanctuary and its lobby were the only areas that Decor decorated on a routine basis, unless we were asked to do a special event. Pam Sufleski occasionally decorated Ryosa for special occasions. Any decor in Ryosa was supervised by members of Properties, including the previous lobby’s God- inspired art wall that was done by all ages in our congregation. This art work now resides in the Sanctuary on the big wooden cross by the coat closet. Appreciation and thanks to all of the people below and to the original special seven ladies, Armie Bonelli, Judy Doyle, Lynne Dirga, Ruby Foster, Janet Lowell, Pam Sufleski, and Meryl Wilson. Through the 11 years we have had other angels who volunteered: Darlene Moberg, Rena Criss, Deni Dax, Nicki Meenan, Ceceila Shampay, Greg Lee, Dick Dirga, Mike Bonelli, Pe-ter Criss, and Brad Kalstein. These ladies and men graciously showed their willingness and creativity to serve the Lord, used their spiritual gifts and spent countless hours volunteering their time. There are also many other angels who came to our aid and many who prayed for us. While a renewed decor team is forming, we are thankful for all those who have contributed to this important area of ministry over the years

Partners In Christ Update TROY WILSON and his family have just MOVED AGAIN. They are our missionaries in San Fracisco who started a ministry and church called “THE TABLE.” This will be their third move, and as usual, it is always a stressful and busy time, even though it was only eight blocks from their previous home. The church is still at the same place—at the corner of Market St. and Van Ness Ave. They ask for prayer for their ongoing outreach and discipleship ministry to Chinese friends. Hao is a new Christian and studying to be a concert pianist. Pray for him as he witnesses to his classmates and his family back home in China. Troy asks that we pray that God would provide more leaders for the ministry at The Table in the midst of a very transient demographic. From the beginning, The Table has attracted mostly singles, but they desire to be a church full of families and kids. So they are starting to plan a kids ministry called KIDS TABLE.. Pray that God would give them the infrastructure, creativity and volunteer base to start this new ministry. CHRIS AND CAROLIN JACKSON serve in Cameroon with Wycliffe. Right now they are very involved with an adult literacy program. It is hard for adults who have never had the opportunity to go to school to learn to read and write. They are experimenting with digital tools in the advanced class to cultivate number awareness and basic arithmetic. They are using “KA Lite,” an off line version of Khan Academy. The languages available are English and French, so Chris is investigating what it would take to get the material into Fulfulde. This may be available for courses next year. They also use flash cards, and have started typing lessons. They are hoping to get low cost Android tablets for the students to use, such as used by Samburu women in Kenya. In Cameroon, the culture for the Muslim and Fulani women is to be a “yes” persn. So it has been wonderful to see how these women students blossom as they learn more and can participate in Biblical discussions. The men in their lives embrace the changes they see in the women because they too have embraced the idea that God created men and women equal. Pray for Chris and Carolin as they continue with this valuable ministry to adults. Exciting news from DAVE and JULEE SCHOCH in Albania regarding their daughter RACHEL. Rachel is a sophomore at William Jessop University, just down the hill! She has been invited to serve on the Global Outreach Team at Jessop to go to East Asia from May 1-16. She will be going with students from other universities and colleges. She is learning some basic language of the area and is excited to have this opportunity to share Jesus with those who have never heard His name. Rachel would love for us to pray for her. Pray that she will have language ability, that she will enjoy the new friends she will make on the team and for boldness as she witnesses to those who God brings in her path. She also needs financial assistance to meet the cost of the trip. If you feel the nudge to help this sweet young lady financially, please contact Emily Dyer (Missions Elder) or any Mission team member, and we will help you.

Kitchen Update/Need 9

HELP WANTED! OUR KITCHEN IS GOING TO

NEED SOME TLC! I don't think there is anyone in our church family who is unaware of the fact that our kitchen is being remodeled! We don't know when the project will be completed, but when it is, there is a lot of work that needs to be done to make it functional once again. Right now, all the contents of the kitchen are in storage here and there, and are getting dusty. The items in the drawers are also covered with a white film. The new cupboards will need to be prepared for the newly washed dished, glasses and food items. Who's going to do all this? HOW ABOUT YOU?! In the past we have had some wonderful volunteers who have stepped up to keep the kitchen clean and organized. Initially we need people to make the kitchen func-tional, and then we need those who will be willing to come once a month to clean a certain area. Many hands make light work! If this sounds like something you would like to do please contact: Meryl Wilson at 477-5342 or 913-5342. Email [email protected] Looking forward to hearing from you!
