Class of 1943 Meets MonthlyThe Class of 1943 agents, Richard Blodgett and JaneWashburn Grant, have the following to report.

At our 60th class reunion, some of the more socially mindedmembers felt that numbers were declining rapidly and that it wouldbe prudent to begin having a monthly luncheon gathering.

Shortly thereafter, Ed Craine was chosen to serve as coordinatorfor the venture and has performed admirably in this position.

We have met monthly at various locations, from cottages atSebec Lake, homes, restaurants, and even the State House Cafeteriain Augusta.

Our most productive endeavor was, no doubt, the meeting ofMay 2004, when we successfully nominated for the Dr. MaryChandler Lowell Award, as an alumni with an outstanding career inthe teaching and education field, Madelyn Ballard Betts.

We, who regularly attend these “Festive Fellowship” soirees, arecompelled to extend our sympathy to those so far afield from FAthat they are unable to participate in these eventful occasions.

On a more serious perception, we all note that the list ofclassmates who could not attend is exceeded in numbers by a roleof those who have graduated to that large and distant final assembly.

FOXCROFT NEWS

Foxcroft Academy studentsplaced first in the 59th Annual

Maine State Science and Technology Fairheld at the University of Maine in Orono.Steven Tatko, in addition to taking first placein Technology Talks and Demonstrationsfor his project on “Steam System Efficiency”(see story below) was also awarded theMaine School of Science and Mathematicstop award in technology. Kate Richardsonand Amber Oldfield were awarded theNaval Science Award, given by the U.S.Navy and Marine Corps in recognition ofquality science and engineering projects.

The State Science Fair is sponsored bythe Maine Principals’ Association in partner-ship with Fairchild Semiconductor, NationalSemiconductor and the University of Maine.Over 160 students from all over the statecompeted in the areas of chemistry, physics,

environmental science, technology, consumer science, psychology, biology/zoology and biology/botany. FoxcroftAcademy had the largest competing team inthe state with forty-seven students makingpresentations in various areas ofcompetition, with our students taking fivefirst place finishes, five second placefinishes and six third place finishes.

Foxcroft Academy’s five first place fin-

ishers included: Henry Obrey, Grades 9-10consumer physics with a project entitledGoin’ Ballistics; Tiffany Lougee with a phys-ics project entitled Static Electricity and FluidsDo Mix!; Jodi Randall, biology/zoology witha project entitled Heart Thumping and BloodPumping; Steve Tatko, Grades 9-12 in thetechnology category with a project entitledSteam System Efficiency; and Laura Swettwith a project entitled Doggie Wheelchair.

This is a small excerpt from an article thatDiana Bowley, a reporter for the Bangor DailyNews, wrote on Steve Tatko’s steam plant:

Tatko’s steam plant consists of a verti-cal fire tube boiler with a large drum perchedover a “furnace” dotted with a series ofvalves. Combustible gases are carried fromthe furnace through several fire tubes. Insidethe fire tubes, the heat is transferred intothe water and then the smoke passes outthrough a smoke stack.

The steam generated in the boiler isthen sent to the engine. The engine runs onone reciprocating feed pump that delivershot water back to the boiler to replace thesteam that goes to the engine. To heat theboiler, Tatko uses a propane burner rated at250,000 BTU’s an hour which delivers ampleheat for his needs.

”It’s a very compact little boiler; it canheat up to a working pressure in about sixminutes at 35 pounds per square inch,” Tatkosaid. His system is about 89 percent efficient.

”Hopefully, I’ll be able to go beyond 89percent by using steam to directly heat the

feed-water,” he explained. To do that, thestudent plans to connect a condenser tothe engine to reclaim the water droplets inthe steam. Because steam condenses atabout 212 degrees Fahrenheit, the waterwill be extremely hot, so it won’t require alarge amount of heat to feed it back intothe boiler at working temperature.

Tatko’s emphasis now is on improvingthe efficiency and making the steam plantmore ergonomically correct for the opera-tor. “I have found myself thinking aboutsteam at all hours of the day and night tosave that extra BTU [British thermal unit]here and there,” Tatko said. “It’s a projectthat I’ve enjoyed.”

ANNUAL FUND

Report of Charitable Giving

2 0 0 4 - 0 5 A n n u a l F u n d

On behalf of Foxcroft Academy’s Board of Trustees, I want to thank parents, faculty and staff members, community membersand alumni, as well as our Trustees for your participation in this year’s Annual Giving Campaign. Your gift shows anunderstanding of the challenges inherent in funding independent school education and plays a critical role in bridging the gapbetween tuition revenues and the true cost of an FA education.

We exceeded this year’s goal by raising over $85,000 in unrestricted gifts which directly supports the instructional budget. Inaddition, $176,662 in charitable cash and in-kind gifts were received to support specific academic, athletic, and scholarshipprograms. Again, thank you for your generosity to Foxcroft Academy.
