So a team of community volunteers from Oak Park Township Senior Services had an IDEA
for Celebrating Seniors Week!
HOW DID CELEBRATING SENIORS WEEK COME TO BE?
Funds are raised through events during Celebrating Seniors week and through the ad sales in this book. We are
grateful to all the businesses who were able to advertise with us, you make a dierence in the lives of our older
community neighbors in a very special way. Thank you!
Annually since 2011, Oak Park, River Forest and Forest Park gather their resources and talents to celebrate seniors—the older adults who continue to play such a vital role in our communities.
The Celebrating Seniors Coalition originated after a flood (as many creation stories start) and today is a valuable resource for emergency needs, cooperation between agencies, raising awareness of services for older neighbors, and highlighting issues that impact those over 60.
Generous community members jumped in to help in the recovery eorts. The volunteers wanted to set up a resource bank for our older neighbors who may need some extra supports in the future.

With a stroke of luck, I stepped into the Celebrating Seniors Coalition at its inception eight years ago. Ever since, it has been a rewarding, educational
journey that has grown in not only my heart but the entire community’s.
It’s a wonderful thing to be a part of businesses, volunteers, non-profi ts, and government agencies coming together to honor and embrace aging. This year, we have nearly 50 educational and entertaining events packed into a single week hosted throughout Oak Park, River Forest and Forest Park. To learn more, check out our calendar of events
This year we added 60 more incredible seniors to our notable honoree list, bringing to well over 500 the total we have recognized in our history. The Class of 2018 is fi lled with kindness, generosity, wisdom, achievement and other inspiring qualities.
One of our missions is to provide support to our older community members in need. Through ad sales in this guide, generous benefactors and patrons, as well as others who donate throughout the year, we are grateful to be able to provide emergency funds as those needs arise.
This guide is also a valuable resource, with an extensive list of local providers of art, culture, housing, private care, attorneys and more. Hold onto it well after Celebrating Seniors Week ends!
In planning this Celebrating Seniors Week, it has been a privilege to serve with so many talented and dedicated community leaders. A heartfelt thank-you to them. As our special events get under way, I look forward to seeing many of you. Together, it will be a pleasure to celebrate seniors.
Jill Wagner, Celebrating Seniors Coalition Chairman

The Community of Congregations is delighted to work
with the Celebrating Seniors Coalition and support its important work of lifting up the wisdom and life experience of the older adults among us.
Not only does the coalition celebrate seniors, they provide needed support to many older adults throughout the year. We are grateful for the tireless efforts of those who support the mission of engaging and supporting people of all ages.
Regardless of your age, take advantage of one of the many scheduled activities throughout Celebrating Seniors Week, and we hope you will lift up our seniors as
an invaluable asset all year round.
The Community of Congregations currently is prioritizing ways to cultivate relationships with both congregations and people of faith in the Austin neighborhood. We want to especially thank those people who have contributed to our diverse, integrated community. And we encourage reaching out to older adults of diverse cultures and life experience. For the collective wisdom will broaden all the more.
Come join us for our annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service. This year it will be held on Sunday, November 18 at 7pm.
In the fall, we welcome your participation in the
Holiday Food and Gift Basket Program that provides gifts, food, and financial support to those in need in our communities during the winter holidays.
The Community of Congregations has a rich history of service. Our coalition launched West Suburban PADS that is now a program of Housing Forward. We also launched the Walk-In Ministry that became Prevail which also is now a program of Housing Forward. We launched the OPRF Food Pantry that serves not only our communities but surrounding ones as well. And Cluster Tutoring was launched by our coalition. We intend to add to this important list in the coming years!
If you would like more information about Community of Congregations, please contact Katie Avalos, Administrator at [email protected] or at PO Box 3365, Oak Park, IL 60303-3365.
Join us as we Celebrate Seniors and build relationships with the wider community!

Preparing for the future can be challenging. I
spend most of my days caring for people who are dealing with the entirely unexpected, and I’ve found that even the most prepared still struggle at times to grasp new realities.
As a rehabilitation physician, I deal with a generally older population, treating everything from arthritic knee pain to strokes to hip fractures.
Regardless of the impairment, most people want the same thing: to regain their independence and live as fully as possible, for as long as possible. As our population is living longer and longer, however, we must prepare for more years toward the end of life with deteriorating physical abilities. One of the best things I’ve seen my patients do to start preparing is to have honest, thoughtful conversations with family about what is truly important to them. Getting everyone on the same page while you are healthy and fully in control will help inform the response when you’re confronted with unexpected life changes. If you really want to stay in your home, start thinking about the possibility of not being able to climb stairs easily one day. Are your bathrooms wide enough to accommodate a walker? Do you have to step into
a big tub if you want to bathe?
Most families want to do everything they can to honor the older generation’s wishes, but it is important to have contingency plans in place, just in case. If you can, start saving now for potential homemaker or caregiver assistance. And look into possibly purchasing a long-term care insurance plan. It’s not easy to talk about these issues, but doing so can mean the dierence between living out your days according to your wishes and having a plan dictated to you.
Of course, even those with the best laid plans sometimes have to be flexible. But even if the situation isn’t exactly what you envisioned, you can still make it work. For instance, if you need to transition into assisted living, take it as an opportunity to meet a new
community of people and let someone else handle the chores of cooking and cleaning.
I love working with seniors in this community because of the rich stories and experiences you all have to share. My wish is for everyone to keep living life on their own terms. So, as I frequently say at the clinic and in the rehab unit, “Plan for the worst, and hope for the best.”

Art surrounds us. Though we may seek it out at
Harrison Street galleries and Oak Park Art League (OPAL) shows or stumble across it during the Sculpture Walk in the warm months, it also shows up in places we may not expect. There are gallery spaces
in the community, courtesy of businesses and the art entities that partner with them, which showcase the creations of local artists on a rotating basis. One place with a sizeable exhibition space is West Suburban Medical Center, which partners with OPAL.According to Stasia
Thompson, director of marketing and public relations at West Suburban, having gallery space integrates art into the fabric of the community while
supporting local artists.“We are a community hospital — more than just a place
to come when people are not well,” Thompson said. “They come for information and education and the art is there on display for everyone.”Accessible during main hospital hours, the audience also
includes patients and employees.“It reaches someone in a vulnerable place in their life
as well as our employees,” Thompson said. “It creates an artful environment and can infl uence their healing process.”Opening Friday is “Fleeting Fragrances,” acrylic works
by Bala Thiagarajan, infl uenced by her Indian heritage and henna art. Vivid colors reference the saris worn in South India and mandalas with a central mirror represent centering oneself and regaining balance.A di erent gallery space, this one run by the Oak Park
Area Arts Council (OPAAC), can be found at Oak Park Village Hall. Currently on display is “Women of Quiet Confi dence,” composed of charcoal and acrylic mixed-media drawings of African American females by Jesse Howard, who grew up in Austin and teaches at OPAL.Howard sees his audience as the village employees and
the people coming in for code enforcement or getting a ticket, i.e. “the people who are trying to make it out there.”

His art keeps things real, reflecting a population he didn’t see when going to galleries — disenfranchised African Americans.“I am depicting the rawness of what I see,” he said. “My
series at village hall shows the African American women who made me who I am today. They are the backbone of the community.”Another OPAAC gallery space is the Oak Park Township
Senior Services Dining Room on the 100 block of South Oak Park Avenue. Painter and illustrator Jack Stockman has been exhibiting there for the past two months. His pieces include art designed for a children’s book,
one of 20 he has illustrated in his career, and paintings he has done for family and friends. Stockman, who also has six paintings along the Metra train track embankment, believes OPAAC is putting “wonderful artwork” into dierent venues.“I enjoy putting [my art] in a dierent context,”
Stockman said, “and I enjoy the fact that people viewing it don’t always have opportunities to see artwork.”While everyone is welcome in the Senior Services Dining
Room during open hours, a low-cost lunch is served weekdays to those over 60, bringing in another audience for artistic viewing. Passersby on Oak Park Avenue are welcome to peek into the windows to view the art as well.Yet more work is up for viewing at Forest Park National
Bank & Trust Co., 7348 W. Madison St., coordinated through OPAAC. In February and March, the Oak Park Photography Club will exhibit there.
“We want to aord artists, who don’t have one, a gallery space to showcase their work and have it out in the public,” said OPAAC Executive Director Camille Wilson White. “And they may have it purchased.”Like any fine art gallery, some of the work may be
purchased directly from the artists.

The true purpose of humor [is] to help people cope with the fears and horrors of the world.– Keegan-Michael Key,
Jordan Peele
I have been a professor and a writer for more years than I care to
reveal in print. It all started with my first “mid-life” crisis and my fascination with how we are aected and identified by our jobs and our careers (My Job My Self, 2000). The topic of work led me naturally to the topic of no-work and how we recreate and use our vacation time (The Importance of Being Lazy, 2003). My curiosity about the dierences between good behavior and bad behavior led me to my next project, (Why It’s Hard to
be Good, 2006). I then focused my attention on the dierences between good and bad behavior in business, (The Ethics of Business, 2012). And my fascination with business as an unorganized process led me to explore the role of leadership in doing business, (10 Virtues of Outstanding Leaders, 2013). But for the last 30 years,
the topic I have really wanted to write on is the role that humor and joke-telling plays in our lives. And happily, I finally did it — The Importance of Being Funny: Why We Need More Humor in Our Lives.Humor and comedy is
more than just foolish fun. Humor is a sword and a shield to defend
us against reality. Humor allows us to poke fun at our limits, our frailties. Jokes can de-fang, de-escalate, and domesticate our fears of the absurdity and complexity of life. As someone much cleverer than I has pointed out, we need humor in order to not die of the truth! The simple fact of the
matter is that life is harsh
and fraught with trials and tribulations. Although humor and joke-telling is neither a permanent cure nor a direct answer to all of life’s challenges, jokes can serve as a temporary reprieve and antidote to the tribulations of life. To paraphrase the satirist Christopher Buckley: Humor, like alcohol, at least

makes our problems and other people momentarily less troublesome. Jokes are weapons made
of words. They allow us to take on taboos, poke fun at life, and mock human frailty. At least for a while, humor can detox the mysteries and make the unknown, the intolerable, and the utterly unavoidable more bearable. Of course, there is a caveat we must always keep in mind — humor is not a cure for life, but it can be a helpful temporary anesthesia! To joke about politics,
illness, death, God, sex or age is my way to detox or defuse something that essentially cannot be tamed. It is
a way of being in charge of something that we really cannot control or completely understand. Joking about a “deep topic” or “dangerous topic” is a way of talking about it, examining it in a way that doesn’t scare us, numb us and rob us of our joy for life. Humor gives us the courage to endure that which we cannot understand or avoid. As the late, great American “philosopher” Joan Rivers succinctly put it, “If you can laugh at it, you can live with it.”

Looking out his window on a rainy February day, Warren Udelson encountered a view
that he had not seen in over 50 years from the vantage point of his Clarence Avenue house. Udelson is a lifelong resident of the 1000 block of Clarence, save for college and the few years afterwards. Born in 1948, his parents brought him home to the house at 1028 Clarence, and after he married, he and his wife bought the house next door. This week, when rehabbers across
the street at 1027 Clarence removed two layers of siding, they revealed a painted message that brought back a flood of memories for Udelson. Painted in broad brushstrokes across the wooden clapboards fronting the house, the message reads: “Welcome Home!! Butchie!! Grab a Paint Brush Boy!”Butchie was Edwin “Butch” Grottke,
older brother to Don Grottke, Warren Udelson’s best friend growing up in Oak Park. Udelson recalls that Butch was eight years older than him and one of five Grottke children raised in the house. According to Udelson, the two families were like one in a time that seemed idyllic with football games in the streets, no locked doors and playing until all hours in the alleys behind houses.“Don and I were like brothers, and
his parents were like having two sets of parents.” Butch left to join the army in 1957,
eventually joining the Green Berets. Udelson recalls of that time, “It was a big deal when Butch went into the army. He was full of adventure and life.” Butch Grottke left home right around the time Udelson’s younger brother Jerry was born, and the senior Udelsons gave Jerry the middle name of Edwin after the neighbor the family was so close to.
When the painted message resurfaced, Udelson tracked down Barbara Grottke, now Barbara Tuttle, to tell her the story. She is the last of the five Grottke children.Tuttle remembers
that her parents painted the welcome home sign for her older brother Butch when he was returning from the army for a visit. “It would have been almost 60 years ago. They were going to paint the house and decided to write a message for Butch.”Butch Grottke was killed in Vietnam
in 1969.Tuttle says Butch was a great
brother and a colorful character who died far too young in Vietnam. He left behind a wife and two daughters. When the house next door to his
parents came up for sale shortly after he married in the 1970s, Udelson and his wife bought it to be near his parents and his brother, Mark, who had cerebral palsy. Of the Grottke house, he says, “I’ve been looking at that house my whole life. It brought back all those memories to see the words painted on the wall. I’m probably one of the only ones here who remembers Butch.”Like so much of childhood, Udelson
observes that much has changed even though he has remained on the same block for most of his life. He says that in 1968 you could stand on his block and see the smoke from the fires that enveloped the city’s West Side after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. When integration began to take hold in Oak Park, a neighborhood that was

lost touch as childhood friends are wont to do, and Don passed away in the 1990s. Barbara Tuttle says that her mother
and Mrs. Udelson were the best of friends. “We were a huge part of their lives and vice versa. We were together constantly. It was wonderful growing up on Clarence Avenue.”She and her niece and nephew plan
to visit Warren and see the painting on the house for a walk down memory lane. When Udelson travelled to
Washington D.C., he found Butch’s name on the Vietnam Memorial and made a rubbing of it.Noting that it might not be
significant to most people, Udelson says the few painted words sparked a lot of memories of people and a period in his life that meant so much. “It’s really something to see this and remember all those days. Is there anybody left who will remember the Grottkes?”

HOSPICE CAREConsidered to be the model for quality, compassionate care at the end of life, hospice care involves a team-oriented approach of expert medical care, pain management, and emotional and spiritual support expressly tailored to the patient’s wishes. Emotional and spiritual support also is extended to the family and loved ones. Generally, this care is provided in the patient’s home or in a home-like setting operated by a hospice program. Medicare, private health insurance, and Medicaid in most states cover hospice care for patients who meet certain criteria.
ASSISTED LIVINGAssisted Living communities are for persons who need help with daily living activities but do not require nursing home care. Typically they provide help with meals, bathing, dressing, housekeeping and other needs. Services are either included in the rent or provided at an extra charge. The Illinois Department of Public Health regulates and licenses assisted living facilities as “Residential Care” providers; however, many assisted living facilities are not licensed, so be sure to ask when considering a community.
NURSING CARENursing homes are facilities for seniors in need of 24-hour nursing care. They provide many of the same care options oered in other senior communities such as room and board, personal care, protection, supervision, and other types of therapy. Many are combined with short and long term rehabilitation facilities to aid in the recovery of individuals from major illnesses, injuries, or surgeries.
ADULT DAY CAREAdult Day Care is a planned program of activities designed to oer both mental and social stimulation to older adults who can no longer manage independently or who feel isolated and lonely. Nutritious meals and snacks are provided as appropriate and medication reminders can be incorporated in the program. Activities may include: arts and crafts; musical entertainment and sing-alongs; stretching or gentle exercise; Wii games and other hand/eye coordination and more. All of these activities are oered in a safe and secure environment to ease the concerns of their family members.
HOME CARE EXPLAINEDHome care agencies allow seniors to receive personal care and maintain independence while remaining in their own home. These services can be a viable alternative to relocating into a care services community and can include rehabilitative care, respite care, & skilled nursing. There are two main types of Home Care Agencies: Licensed Non-Medical Home Care, & Licensed Medical Home Care. Non-medical care services are typically covered by private pay, long term care insurance, or by veterans benefits or Medicaid if the care recipient qualifies. Medical home care services are typically covered by Medicare if the recipient is over age 65 or otherwise qualifies.

If you think DYING SUCKS . . . imagine a stranger making end-of-life decisions for you!
Thursday, April 26, 2018 from 4:30 to 7 pm (light refreshments available) in Pine Room at Ascension School, 601 Van Buren, Oak Park, 60304.You’ve tried everything, you face a critical decision, you can extend your life
by a few months with treatments that have serious side effects. Would you want doctors to stop, or continue to do everything possible? If you have not
already completed the legal forms that state how you want to be treated when you cannot speak for yourself – someone will be appointed to speak for you.
Don’t let this happen to you. Come to our session to learn which forms will give you your voice. Once you complete these forms and “share them” with your loved ones, closest friend(s) and medical professionals. You can check this important planning tool off your “to do” list.
[Background: In 2014 it was determined that 96% of the adults in LaCrosse Wisconsin had completed these forms and now the conversations around town include gossip about who HAS NOT filled out their advance directives.]
Can the residents of Forest Park, Oak Park and River Forest equal that percentage? We need YOU to help us get a significant percentage of our residents to complete their forms.
e SCSCC provides education and networking opportunities to members who provide services to older adults in our communities.Member Agencies meet on the 3rd ursday of the month and oer a Spring Event to the older adult community each year.
