Cutter Shaft Material Wrapping, Causes and Effects:

Wrapping is a condition where the grass or other growth being mowed will wrap around thecuttershaft instead of being cut and mulched. This condition is caused by the cuttershaft speed beingtoo slow.

Different grasses, vines etc. cut differently and require different minimum speeds of thecuttershaft to keep it clear and free from wrapping. Tough fibrous growths are the hardest to cut withoutencountering wrapping and in some instances may require more than the normal cuttershaft speed of2000 RPM. Usually 2000 RPM cuttershaft speed is enough to cut cleanly without wrapping.

The cuttershaft speed may be too slow just because the tractor engine speed (in case of the self-powered models) is being operated throttled back. The solution in such situations is to increase thethrottle to recommended settings and drop to a lower ground speed gear. (See operating instructions forthe particular model involved)

The Cuttershaft speed may also be too low if not enough power is available to do the job. If themower is taken into a cut too tough for the power available, the cuttershaft speed will drop. If the speedgets too low, the material will start to wrap. The wound up grass will form a big wad at the end of thecuttershaft pressing against the cutter housing end plate. This wad will act like a big friction brake. It canbecome so tight that it will be impossible to turn the cuttershaft without first cutting away the wad. Sucha wad naturally causes the mower to pull hard. This is a situation where a lack of power is actually causinga need for more power.

So much heat can be generated by a wad wrapped around the end of the cuttershaft that thebearing will actually turn blue from the heat. Naturally, such heat will destroy the bearings and seals andresult in bearing failure. Even if the bearing does not fail it may get hot enough to melt the grease in thebearing housing. Once the grease is gone (it can happen as little as 15 minutes), there is nothing to keepthe bearing from burning up due to a lack pf lubrication even though the bearing was just greased. Thetype grease recommended for hammer Knife mower bearings has a high temperature (Bulletin No. 3dated 7/21/56) has a high temperature melting point and will stay with bearing under adverse conditionslonger than ordinary greases. Bearings which fail because of above mentioned conditions are notdefective in material or workmanship, and are not covered by warranty.

Models: All Flail mowers using Mott Flail Knives Date:May 8, 1995

Bulletin No:050895(old # 5895-2)

Electric Flail Knife Grinder:The Mott (Alamo Industrial) Knife grinder P/N 702321, will sharpen all Mott Knives. The

Grinder is shipped complete and ready to use. A word of caution about electrically powered tools:Never use this grinder or any other power toll while standing on a wet surface, even though thegrinder has a grounded plug. Always wear and use all Safety Equipment when using power tools.

The grinder is easy to use. Following is suggested method to use when sharpening MottFlail Knives with the Mott Flail Knife Grinder/Sharpener.1. Support all Heads with stands, Do Not get under any object only supported by hydraulic

system or a hoist. Secure Tractor so it cannot be started by anyone.2. Position the mower so knives are easily accessible and mower is well supported by stands.3. Prevent the Cuttershaft from rotating, this can be done by clamping a bar to knife lugs and

other end of bar to deck.4. Determine which edges should be sharpened, top or bottom. Forward rotation mowers cut

with the rear (Bottom) edge of the knife. Reverse rotation mowers cut with the front (Top)edge of knife. It is necessary to sharpen the edge that is used.

5. Choose proper end and side of grinder. Match the illustration on the grinder with thedirection the knife tip points, as you face it. Note: Keep in mind which edge is to besharpened. If the tip points left, hold the grinder in the left hand, If the tip points right, holdthe grinder in the right hand. Note: Refer to Figure 2 for steps 5 & 6.

6. Use your free hand to hold the knife out away from the cuttershaft. Move the grinder so thatthe knife is inserted into the curved slot. Move the grinding wheel to put light pressure onthe knife edge. Move the grinder back and forth, grinding more at the tip of the knife. Note:Refer to Figure 2 for steps 5 & 6.

7. Sharpen the knives in that row which faces the same direction. Note: after severalsharpenings the knife should be tapered not notched.

8. Reverse the grinder to the use other slot to sharpen in same row which face the oppositedirection.

9. Rotate cuttershaft and repeat procedure for other rows of knives until all knives aresharpened.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION BULLETIN No. 061995Alamo Industrial Technical Services Department

1502 East WalnutSeguin, Texas 78155

830-372-2708

Models:Slope Mower, Boom Axe Balance

Date:Jun. 19, 1995

Bulletin No:061995(old #IB-61995-4)

Boom Balance Recommendations:

Introduction:To insure the safety of the operator against instability of the tractor, it is crucial that the left rear

tire of the tractor exert a minimum force (weight) of 1,000 pounds on the ground when the boom is at fullextension and the cutter head is horizontal and two feet off the ground (Figure 1). An installation notmeeting this requirement is dangerous and should not be operated as overturning the unit can occurresulting in injury or death. An installation meeting this requirement allows operation of the unit on slopesnot exceeding 5°. For operating on slopes greater than 5°, contact Alamo Industrial Technical ServiceDept. for additional information. The head and boom must be resting on the boom rest or the ground priorto removing or repairing Left rear Tire.

Continued Next Page

1. Tractor / Boom Mower Stability -Test Methods:There are two acceptable methods for determining if the above requirements have been achieved.

A. Drive -on floor Scale (Best Method)1. Position the Boom as shown in Figure 1.2. Drive the tractor onto the scale so that only the left rear tire is on scale3. Note the weight, If the weight is below 1,000 pound, refer to the section on "Improving

Stability". If the weight is 1,000 pounds or more, the unit has passed and is safe tooperate as explained above.

Information Bulletin 061995 Continued from previous Page

B. Balance Weight (Acceptable Method)1. Position the Boom as shown in Figure 1.2. Place a 210 pound weight at the outer edge of the mower head as shown in figure 1.3. If the left rear tire lifts off the ground, refer to the section on "Improving Stability". If the

left rear tire remains firmly on the ground, then the unit has passed and is safe to operateas explained earlier.

2. Example: Slope MowerAlamo Industrial has determined that the following tractor specifications will meet the 1,000 pound

requirement for a slope mower.Tractor Weight............................. 5,500 lbs.Rear Tire Size.............................. 18.4 - 30Adjustable Wheels....................... Adjusted to 8 ft. (96") outside measurement

Left rear proximately 50" from tractorcenter line and right rear proximately 46"

from center lineTire Ballast..................................... Left rear tire filled with 960 pounds of calcium

chloride water solution. Use five pounds ofcalcium chloride per gallon of water.

3. Improving Stability:It is difficult to send out a "standard" counterweight package which works well on all

tractors due to the many makes and models used for boom machines. At times it may be necessary toadd wheel weights in addition to the standard practice of adding a full charge of calcium chloride to theleft rear tire and spreading the rear tires to a minimum to 96" if possible, it is also advantageous to spreadthe rear tires to wider than ti minimum 96"

Tire Spacing; The rear tire spacing of the tractor is very important. As the tire spacing is narrowed it

reduces the effectiveness of the tractor weight and wheel weight in counter balancing the boom. Therefore any spacing narrower than the 8 ft. (96") previously referred to will require more applicationwhere tire spacing is less than 8 ft.

Boom Extension; As the boom length at maximum extension is decreased, the amount of counterweight

necessary for balancing the unit is reduced. This is accomplished by relocating the boom stop. Thefactory should be consulted on application where this method is used.

Tractor Weight;Tractor weight is extremely important to the balance of the unit. The left rear tire tends to

tip upward and therefore any weight to the left of the right rear tire acts as a counterweight, tractorincluded. An increase in tractor weight will allow a decrease in the amount of counterweight necessary. The following table lists possible combinations of tire size, weight of calcium chloride water solution, andleft rear wheel weights necessary to achieve the proper counterweight. This table assumes the tirespacing is 8 ft (96") outside, left rear tire 50" from tractor center line and right rear tire 46" from tractorcenter line (or wider).

Failures of the mower push-pull switch:

Alamo has recently received reports of failures of the referenced switch. The failuresmodes are:

(a) Knob pulls off rod.(b) Rod and Knob pulls out of switch body.

Test performed on numerous switches indicates that the (b) failures are due to excessiveforce being applied to the knob when shutting off the mower. Specifically, the knobs are usuallyroughly slapped to turn the mower off. After internal parts of the switch are damaged, the rod canthen be pulled out easily. The (a) failures are due to the knobs not being securely tightened.

To prevent these failures from occurring, or to replace a damaged switch, use the followingprocedure to adjust the travel of the switch. (See attached diagram).

1. Install the switch body in the holder and tighten the nut.2. Screw the Knob on the rod to the bottom of the thread, but do not overtighten. It

will probably be necessary to hold the rod with pliers to get the knob tight, if you douse caution not to score the rod with the pliers.

3. Measure the distance (if any) between the knob and the nut. Record themeasurement.

4. If a Gap exists between the knob and the nut, remove the knob.5. Remove the nut and install the same thickness of flat washers that was

measured in step 3. Install and tighten the nut> DO NOT install more washersthan needed to take up the space. Flat Washer Part No. 00023500 or equivalent canbe used.

6. Install the Knob, using Locktite or similar thread locking compound. Thread theknob on the rod all the way. Test to make sure that when the switch is "Off" (withrod pushed in) that the knob can not travel further into the switch.

Speed Increaser Assembly P/N 00768991: Plug Seal Update, There have been someisolated reports of the case plugs backing out on the above mentioned Speed Increasers, causingloss of oil and cataastrophic failures of the gearbox.

Test conducted by Alamo Industrial revealed when ambient temperatures exceeded approxi-mately 100° F. the nylon and plastic washers on the plugs would get soft or melt, this allowed the plugto back out.

We have contacted our supplier of these parts and had the material specifications changesfor these washers. The new washers are made of aluminum istead of the old nylon or plastic. Thepart number for the washers (P/N 00754536 and 00755424) will remain the same as there will be nochanges in the way they fit, only in the type material they are made out of.

All units operating in warm temperature of 100° F. or higher should be changed right awayto prevent plugs from backing out.

Oil Leaking from new single Acting Hydraulic Cylinders:

There have been numerous cases of the dealers and customers replacing single actinghydraulic cylinders on new machines due to oil leakage out of the vent plug in the cylinder.

In many of these instances, no defect could be found in the cylinders. Further investigationhas revealed that he manufacture of our cylinders is leaving oil in the cylinders after their testing. TheOil is left to help protect the interior of the cylinders during storage. When the cylinders are fullyactuated, they are forcing this oil out the vent plug, causing what appears to be a leaking cylinderthrough the vent plug. Even the oil is cleaned off the cylinder after testing there is enough oil still insidethe cylinder to bleed out when used.

If you have a New Cylinder that appears to be leaking from the vent plug, The oil should becleaned off and unit ran for a few days to a week to determine if the Cylinder is leaking, or if it is theoil that was left in the cylinder to protect it. It has been found that in some cases it has taken as muchas a week for this to appear that it is not leaking.

If after running and cycling the cylinder during operation and the cylinder continues to leak thenthe necessary repair should be performed.

Cylinders that are attracting dust around them is not considered to be leaking. This dustcollecting around them is considered normal.

All Cylinder that are returned as leaking will be pressure tested for leakage to determine thecondition of the Cylinder and its components.

Dead Batteries on New tractors:

There have been several reports recently of dealers receiving machines with dead batteries, some of which could not be satisfactorily recharged. Please see the attached copy of a tag whichis coming with the new tractors.

The "small electrical discharge" being mentioned amounts to a constant drain on the battery. If the battery cable (+ Post) is left connected for a long enough time with the tractor inactive, the batterywill become sulfated (permanently damaged) and will not accept a charge. Sulfated batteries are notwarranted through the battery manufacturer.

At present, the only alternative to removing the battery cable would to be install a batterydisconnect switch in the negative cable, which would allow the battery to be easily isolated. Theseswitches are available at most major tractor dealers. USE CAUTION when installing any thing onbattery cables, disconnect the positive cable before installing disconnect switch and make sure afterswitch is installed that it is "OFF" before reconnecting Positive Cable.

ATTENTION ! BATTERY CARE

Your new Tractor has electronics which cause a very small electrical demand on the battery. If the tractor in not in use for an extended period, disconnect battery to avoid damage by excessive discharge.

Eleminate Erratic Boom movement:(which utilize the joystick operated proportional valve system)

Procedures to eliminate erratic boom operation caused by microwave interference fromcustomer installed two-way radios.

There have been some scattered reports in regards to erratic or unexpected movement of oneor more of the proportionally controlled boom functions of the joystick control system during theoperation of the customer installed two-way radios.

Specifically, the Swing , Lift or Dipper functions may operate at a speed of one foot of movementevery 10 to 20 seconds, depending on the function and direction, when the radio microphone is keyed.

Research and experiments with machines in the field has revealed that this phenomenon is thereception of the signal transmitted by the radio passing through the variable controls of the boom controlsystem. Specifically, the wire harness of the control system acts much like a receiving antenna andreceives the radio signal which sends a false signal through harness.

Elimination of the interference may be obtained with the use of at least of three possible options:

1. Remove the radio from the tractor completely.2. Install a reflecting plate under the Antenna. A reflecting plate is simply a thin, flat piece of metalwhich provides the proper amount of impedance to essentialy reflect the signal emanating down fromthe antenna and prevent interference with the valve electronics and tractor functions. Since theinstallation requires a fairly large (at least 36" square) area, the specially designed reflecting or "groundplane tape" can be used in place of the metal sheet for easier installation. this tape is available at mostelectronics or radio equipment sources.3. Utilize a ground plane antenna. These specially designed antenna utilize the standard centralradial element and at least two other radials set at 45° angles to the central one. These radials mustbe cut to specific lengths depending on the frequency of the system. Only a professional radio installeror retailer should be consulted in regard to the avaialbility and proper installation of these antenna.

The installation, operation, and resulting effects to the tractor or any attachment due to theaddition of a radio system to any machine is the responsibility of the machine owner and the radioinstaller. Only trained, profesional radio installers should be utilized.

The boom tube brake is installed in order to allow for controllable function of the boom tubeextension, or movement of the mower head outward from the tractor. The boom tube brake is locatedon top of the outer tube assembly at the mower end. The proper adjustment of the brake is required toensure the controllable movement of the inner tube and the mower head such as to limit damage dueto sudden extension from a loose adjustment, or binding due to an over tight adjustment.

Typically the boom extension should allow the head to move away from the tractor at 1.0 to 1.5feet per second.

The Boom Tube bearings are located in several locations around the outer tube and provide aguide in which the inner tube travels. These bearings are installed to limit the amount of slack or freeplay between the outer and inner tubes, and prevent metal to metal contact of tubes.

Problems associated with the brake or bearing adjustment usually involve either excessivelyfast movement of the inner tube extension, or jerky / sticky actuation of the same function.

Adjustment procedures:

Important Note; Do Not make any adjustments to the Boom Tubes, Mower or Tractor withoutfollowing all safety procedures. Likewise the mower head should be sitting on the ground and the tractorshould be turned off and secured before any work is performed.

1. Operate the boom extend function to evaluate the operation or confirm a complaint.2. Secure the tractor and mower3. Loosen the one or two bearing adjustment bolts on each bearing plate by at least one turn to

eliminate any possible binding by the bearing (See Figure 1).4. Operate the tractor in order to reevaluate the extension function. If it is still jerky, the brake is most

likely to tight.5. Secure the tractor and mower.6. Loosen the four brake bolts one turn at a time until smooth operation is achieved. Likewise, if

the operation was allowing the head to extend to fast, tighten the four bolts one turn at a time.Recheck the operation in order to ensure smooth controllable movement.

7. Reset the bearing by tightening the one or two bearing adjusting bolts on each bearing plate untilthe bearings contact the inner boom tube, then back off the adjustment 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn toprovide slight clearance between the bearing and the tube. NOTE: It will be necessary insome cases to manipulate the hydraulic controls with the mower head on the ground such thatthe inner tube is relocated within the outer tube, this is in order to take pressure off the bearingsand allow for the proper adjustment.

8. Reevaluate the extension function. If the operation becomes jerky after the completion of stepfour, it may ne necessary to further loosen the bearing plate adjustment bolts.

9. Confirm that the Boom is operating such that the boom extends at a rate in the range from 1.0ft to 1.5 ft per second.

10. Persistent problems with the boom extend functions should be brought to the attention of theAlamo Industrial Technical Service Dept. at 830-372-2708 or fax to 830-372-9603.

Hydraulic Pump and Mechanical Improvements:As of January 1998, many design characteristics of the Triumph Sickle bar Mowers were

updated to provide increased durability and improved performance. Many of these improvementsinvolved added supports or increased strength of many high wear components.

The most notable change, however, involved the complete redesign of the hydraulic system toprovide systems matched to the individual tractor specifications or requirements. As a result, thesystem will provide only enough hydraulic flow to allow for the most efficient operation of the mower. This has eliminated the need for any governor or other restricting or reducing components. Therefore, all hydraulic components will provide longer service life at much cooler operating temperatures.

Care should be taken to replace any failed components with only the genuine Alamo Industrialcomponent parts specifically designed and adjusted for the machine. Installation of any substandard,or incorrect after market parts can result in poor performance or rapid failure of the entire hydraulicsystem due to the development of incorrect pressures or flows and/or excessive heat generation dueto restriction or over speed.

The Alamo Industrial Technical Service Dept. should be contacted should any questions arisein regard to the proper replacement part required for any specific machine.

There are three different replacement pumps available, depending on Application, RPM thattractor is running, See Instruction Drawing P/N 02973295 for a complete set of instructions onthese old and new pumps.

Change in the availability of rebuilt components:

This bulletin has been published to inform you of a change in the availability of rebuilt parts. In the past, rebuilt components such as pumps and motors were available for use as spare parts. That will no longer be the case. The major factor in this decision was the lack of cores that are returnedfrom the customer.

Since Alamo Industrial will no longer offer rebuilt parts an effort will be made to offer customersa complete parts listing of all components that are needed as service repairs. The most commonservice parts are pumps and motors will now be available for order through Alamo IndustrialCustomer Service Department. Likewise, a parts breakdown with Alamo Industrial part numbers willbe provided. The Eaton Pumps and Motors, Danfoss Control Valves will be the first componentsavailable with such a parts breakdown.

It is Our intention to provide a better and more reliable service parts system. This transitionwill better suit customer, and provide more timely and efficient parts delivery.

Spindle Bearing Lubrication Update:

Normal maintenance of the # 02960553B, 02960553C and 02968859A Spindle assemblieshas included the addition of NLGI 000 grease to provide proper lubrication of the bearing assemblies.Due to repeated customer requests, this lubrication requirement has been changed to NLGI EP, #2 Lithium Wheel Bearing Grease.

Implementation of this grease will allowimproved lubrication especially to the top bearingas well as substantial improvement of the dailymaintenance requirements.

Conversion:

1. Remove the existing fill plug from thespindle housing and discard it. (this is thelower plug in figure 1)

2. Install a standard 1/4" fine thread greasezert into the fill plug port as shown in figure 1.

3. Remove the Vent plug (Top plug in figure 1)4. Fill the housing with NLGI EP, # 2 Lithium Grease or equivalent from a standard grease gun

until the new grease is seen in the vent plug hole. (Approximately 2 standard grease tubeswill be required when Spindle Assembly is empty).

5. Clean off any excess or over flow grease and reinstall vent plug.6. Maintain proper lubrication with 5 pumps of grease into the spindle every 8 hours of use. This

will keep the Spindle bearings lubricated.7. Always clean excess Grease away from Spindle after greasing Spindle.
