TECHNICAL TOURSOn Monday, 18 November 2019, technical tours to selected destinations will be arranged for local and international delegates. The tours enable delegates to experience and gain new knowledge in various aspects of the oil palm industry in Malaysia. These are the options for delegates:

OPTION A: PLANTATION & MILLMalaysia is the second largest producer of oil palm in the world. A visit to an oil palm plantation is a must while you are in Malaysia. Visit a plantation and mill to gain close experiences in managing an oil palm estate and palm oil mill and learn how to improve productivity and optimise resources. Delegates can take this opportunity to gain knowledge and advice from experienced estate and mill managers.

OPTION B: BIOGAS PLANTBiogas capture is a key agenda in our country to ensure the sustainability of palm oil industry. In Malaysia, oil palm operators are required to implement sustainable practices through optimal usage of natural resources and their biomass products. This technical tour provides delegates the opportunity to visit a plant where biogas is produced from palm oil mill effluent (POME), which is then scrubbed and purified to produce clean methane for use as fuel.

OPTION C: MPOB RESEARCH STATION Located in Keratong, Pahang, this research station was established in 1992. The land area is about 607 ha of which 522 ha are designated for oil palm plantation and R&D activities especially on oil palm planting materials. This research station also has an animal feed processing plant for producing quality animal feed. It also has a training centre which provides training to local youths in areas related to plantation, mechanisation and entrepreneurship.

OPTION D: SMALLHOLDERSOil Palm Independent Smallholders (ISH) are individuals who own less than 40.46 ha of oil palm plantation and manage the plantation themselves. In Malaysia, land size owned by ISH is very small averaging around 3.9 ha. 16.8% of 5.85 million ha (979 892 ha) of total oil palm planted area in this country are owned by ISH. A visit to an ISH oil palm plantation is a must while you are in Malaysia. The visit will give you a broader view of how the ISH make a living with small scale land planting oil palm and supplement their income through integration with other crops, livestock, and/ or other valuable activities.

OPTION E: OLEOCHEMICALSOleochemicals are generally chemical products derived from animal or vegetable triglycerides, even if they contain elements of petrochemical origin. The oleochemical industry in Malaysia started in the early 1980’s. There are 20 oleochemical companies operating in Malaysia with 2.73 million tonnes processing capacity/ year. Oleochemicals from Malaysia have been exported to more than 100 countries, developed regions as well growing regions in Asia.

agricUlTUre, BioTecHnologY & sUsTainaBiliTY (aBs) conFerence SESSION 1 • AGRICULTURE

Oil palm plays a crucial role in the economies of developing countries, and provides the source of food, income and employment for their rural populations. As global palm oil demand is expected to grow further, palm oil offers promising economic prospects under the constraints of social responsibility and environmental sustainability. In this modern society, the development of technological advancements help to provide oil palm planters with the tools and resources to make farming more sustainable. Current emphasis are placed on the ability to mechanise, viable fertiliser application, implementation of integrated pest and disease management along with the sustainability of natural resources towards a sustainable agriculture. This session will discuss on the up-to-date upstream management practices, crop biosecurity, innovations in farm mechanisation and application of precision agriculture towards achieving higher yield and productivity of this golden crop.

SESSION 2 • BIOTECHNOLOGY

Changing consumer trend towards sustainable products is clearly impacting the global oil palm industry. Consumers are now more concerned with the cultivation of food, the purchase and most importantly, the value of the power of choice. Commitment towards sustainable practices means strict adherence to maintaining sustainability and traceability throughout the supply chain. As the industry immerses itself in the realms of the 4th Industrial Revolution, adopting cutting-edge technologies and disruptive innovations to revolutionise conventional methods in crop improvement would ensure higher output can be achieved with less time and effort. It is envisaged that these integrated platforms (e.g big data, data analytics, disruptive technologies, etc.) may potentially contribute to the future development of the oil palm. This session will continue to highlight the latest biotechnological trends in agriculture research and development, relevant to the oil palm for a sustainable posterity.

SESSION 3 • SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability in oil palm management is an important element in ensuring the profit and prosperity of stakeholders, environmental conservation and better livelihood without compromising the needs of the future generation. This session will deliberate issues in which social capital influences the sustainable practices by smallholders, the impact of MSPO certification in verifying the sustainable approaches and the efforts towards enhancing the conservation of biodiversity within the oil palm ecosystem.
