• Includes preventative discipline– Ephesians 6:4– Romans 13:1-7 Warning lest sting of law be

felt– Galatians 5:19-21 Forewarn of dangers

• Involves correction – “Punishment; chastisement, control gained by enforcing obedience or order” (Webster)

• With Adam– Genesis 2:15-17– Genesis 3:6– Genesis 3:22-24

• In Noah’s time– Genesis 6:5; 1 Peter 3:19-20; Genesis 7:21

Purposes of Discipline

• To show our love– 2 Corinthians 2:4, 7-8; 1 Corinthians 13:6;

• That the spirit may be saved– 1 Corinthians 5:5; Hebrews 12:11; 2

Thessalonians 3:14; Titus 1:13; Matthew 18:15b

Corrective Discipline

• For a sin against a brother – Matthew 18:15-17

• For members in sin – 1 Corinthians 5:4-5, 11; 2 Thessalonians 3:6, 14-15 (withdraw—”shrink from a person or thing,” Vine); 1 Timothy 5:19-20

• For the false teacher – 1 Timothy 6:3-5; Titus 1:9-13; 2 John 9-11; Romans 16:17-18

• Includes loving acceptance of the penitent – 2 Corinthians 2:6-8, 11
