On The Horizon
MAY 2012 As United Methodists we celebrate two sacraments: Holy Communion and Baptism. The sacraments are a means of grace through which God works invisi-bly in us to strengthen and nurture our faith. At Disciples UMC we celebrate Holy Communion at the early service almost every Sunday and on the first Sunday of each month at the 11 o’clock service. The primary understanding around Com-munion is that we celebrate the real presence of Christ. In other words we affirm that spiritually Christ is present. The Communion Table in the United Methodist church is open to all. The Book of Worship says, “All who intend to lead a Chris-tian life, together with their children, are invited to receive the cup and the bread.” In both sacraments we affirm what God is doing in our lives. Baptism is an initiation into the universal church (the body of Christ), the United Methodist Church and the local congregation. Baptism is an act of the Holy Spirit and persons of any age may be baptized. Because we affirm God’s prevenient grace—the grace by which God seeks us out and prepares us for faith—we baptize infants and small children who are too young to take baptismal vows for themselves. As parents take the vows on their behalf, the church affirms that children being born into the brokenness of the world should receive the cleansing and renewing of God’s forgiveness. Since Baptism is an initiation into the church, the entire worshipping congregation participates in the sacrament. Members of the congregation reaffirm their faith and promise to support and nur-ture the person being baptized. Baptism most often is administered by sprin-kling. However it may be done by pouring or immersion. Over the next few weeks, it will be my privilege to baptize several of our
children. We will also receive new adult members. It is a joy to watch and partici-
pate as God is growing the church.
See you in church.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. When we think of healthy lifestyle choices, we often overlook the importance of protecting our skin. Skin cancer (including melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer) is the most common of all cancers. Many skin cancers could be prevented by protecting your skin from the sun's rays and avoiding indoor tanning. The 2012 American Cancer Society sun safety campaign provides ideas
and resources for increasing awareness of the risk of skin
cancer and helping you stay well.
Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers. Many skin cancers could be prevented by pro-tecting your skin from the sun’s rays and by avoiding indoor tanning beds. Unfortunately, when we think of healthy lifestyle choices, we often overlook the importance of protecting our skin.
Sun safety is important all through the year, not just in the summertime. Most skin cancers are
caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and the negative effects of UV radiation build-
up over the course of your life. In fact, you can be exposed to UV radiation while driving in your
car or sitting by a window in your office. UV radiation is also present on cloudy days, when the
sun is not visible.
Obviously, you cannot completely avoid the sun, but you can be aware of the risks and reduce
the amount of time you spend in the sun. To reduce the harmful effects of excessive and unpro-
tected sun exposure, you should protect your eyes and skin every day.
Try to avoid direct exposure to the sun between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. That’s
when UV rays are the most intense.
Wear wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses that block UV rays.
Protect exposed skin by using a sunscreen lotion that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of
15 or higher.
Avoid tanning beds and sun lamps.
Sun safety is important for both adults and children, and it is never too late to reduce your chances of developing skin cancer. For more information on how the American Cancer Society can help you and your family, stay well by protecting yourselves from skin cancer, call us at 1-800-227-2345, or visit cancer.org/sunsafety. We are here to help you stay well.

HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW YOUR PEW-MATE???
The Pew-Mate featured in the April newsletter, as you may or may not have guessed, was Mr. Tom
Turner!!!
Our Pew-Mate for this month is a history buff and is also interested in anything in outer space!! I won-
der if our P-M traveled into outer space if they would find their favorite things, like vanilla ice cream,
Roman Holiday and chocolate covered raisins!!!
Being a history buff explains why their favorite book is “Andersonville”, the story about a prisoner of
war camp during the Civil War.
This Disciples member grew up with two older brothers and a younger sister. They are the proud par-
ent of three, and enjoy three grandchildren.
Our P-M doesn’t think much of reality tv and the tv news media – they had this to say about both –“
they are not real, truthful or honest. The media try to rewrite the news and reality tv does not have a shred of reality in it. They put on entertainment shows, which are not very good or entertaining. “
Sounds like a pet peeve to me!!!!
Old furniture is a hobby, songs from musicals are a favorite, especially those from “Les Miserables”.
Blue is a favorite color, roses a favorite flower and MASH and Star Trek are favorite TV shows.
When asked about their favorite season, the reply was: Winter. I enjoy the quiet peaceful feeling that
winter brings, and the silence and beauty of a gentle snowfall”.
Unfortunately, they didn’t get that feeling this past winter!!
Favorite Bible Verse – They don’t have one. Each time they read the Bible they find something new
and wonderful, no matter how many times they read it.
I hope you enjoy figuring out who this month’s Pew-Mate is!!

During the ACC Tournament basketball teams took time outs to get their heads straight, to get a

know, got off the “gerbil wheel” of life to sit before the Lord to hear Him speak to
you? Buncombe Street UMC Women at the Well ministry will be hosting a morning of reflection
and quiet prayer led by Rev. Laura Bratton, Robbie Boman and Margo Patton. Afterward a light
lunch will be served for a time of sharing. For more information and reservations contact Margo
Patton (430-2908) or [email protected]

Bring Your Friends – Everyone Welcome
We will be working on rawhide bracelets to give to the Salkehatchie Upstate campers who will stay at Disciples this Summer. We will also work on necklaces for eyeglasses and sunglasses. These have been popular at “Mountain Made” in Pendleton where we have our beads on consignment. We want to have a nice supply when we go later this summer to re-plenish our stock.
Mother’s Day is just around the corner. Beads of Hope would make a lovely unique gift,
and your purchase will help our mission programs as well. The jewelry is available in the
church office during weekday office hours or see Cheryl Turner, Lanneau Grant, or Debby Bal-
cer on Sundays to see the Beads of Hope Collection. If you need more information about
Beads of Hope, call Cheryl Turner 297-3273 or email at [email protected].

It is hard for me to believe that we are approaching the end of our school year. May will be packed with activities….Cinco De Mayo festivities, Mother’s Day teas, our Pirate Day, our end of year picnic for CDC families, and K-4 Graduation. It is always bittersweet to say farewell to our 4 year olds that will be attending Kindergarten next fall. Many of these children have been with us since they were infants. Watching them grow and develop has been our pleasure. Be-low is a list of our K-4 graduating class.

Adult Fellowship Pizza and Movie Nite
Saturday, June 16 at 6:00 PM
Enjoy pizza from Tony’s New York Style Pizzeria in
the Fellowship Hall. Then watch the inspiring movie, “Amazing Grace” on our big screen in the sanctuary. This is the heroic story of how one man’s passion and perseverance changed the world. Based on the true story of William Wilberforce the movie follows his courageous quest to pass a law to end the Brit-ish slave trade and reform society. Along the way, Wilberforce meets intense opposition from members of Parliament but his minister, John Newton, a reformed slave ship captain who penned the beloved hymn “Amazing Grace”, urges him to put his faith into action and see the cause through. The outstanding movie “Amazing Grace” will move your heart.
Dinner and a Movie and it only costs $7.50/person – What a Deal!
Sign-Up, Pizza Preference, and Payment will begin in mid May. To register
for this event simply sign up on the sheet on the Communication Board and denote
your pizza preference. Use the envelopes for prepayment on the shelf below the
poster and place in the Adult Fellowship mailbox or give money to Tom Turner or
Dan Stansell.

Operation Overboard
June 25-29
9AM -noon
Dear Parents,
We’re bringing an underwater universe adventure to the kids at our Vacation Bible School,
OPERATION OVERBOARD: DARE TO GO DEEP WITH GOD! Your children will become
divers-in-training at OPERATION OVERBOARD as we plunge into God’s word and discover
stories of deep faith.
After a high energy opening at Ocho’s Cove, the divers make their way to the Underwater Pas-sage. Interactive Bible lessons reveal five ocean insights for living as followers of God, and your divers will discover Sea Scripture memory verses that will boost their faith long after VBS.
Our mission project will again be Upstate Salkehatchie. We encourage the children to bring wa-ter and building supplies and safety gear to VBS to donate. These supplies will be used in mid July when teens and chaperones repair, reroof and restore houses for those in need.
Our preschool registration this year is limited to 16 three/ four year olds. We can not take more than that due to teacher/student ratio. We welcome your help if you can volunteer. Please com-plete the registration form and we will confirm your child’s attendance. Children must have turned 3 before August of 2011 and be potty trained (unless there is a medical reason they are not potty trained).
For more information contact Debby Balcer at 254-0802 or the church office at 297-0382
