Since 1967, when the Association of Southeast Asian Nations(ASEAN) was established, a significant change in the economy of SoutheastAsia has taken place. ASEAN has provided economic efficiency whichprovided a big help to the nations that formerly faced the same problemsregarding economy failures. It served like water, quenching the thirst of theregions towards development. With its objective, ASEAN united and

organized the Southeast Nations, bringing about a free flow of goods, services, investments, capitals and skilledlaborers. This further resulted to the enhancement of facilities, promoting higher-educational system; and to the boostof the economy, aiming at the peoples’ good and welfare.

However, though the ASEAN can be considered as a very influential organization, it cannot, on its own, deliverits objective without the help from other significant institutions. To this regard, it cannot be denied that the library hasplayed an important role in reaching the nations’ needs and wants towards progress.

The Library has been widely used in all countries. Despite of technological program majority would still preferthe use of library services and resources. However, due to the obsolete character of many libraries, Filipinos, somehow do not consider them as a good source anymore. Moreover, its aim of broadening the knowledge of people, providing reliable information sources and enhancing information facilities are likewise not met. These are all due tothe Philippines’ underdeveloped economic system, way back when ASEAN has just started its step to reform. But now, vast resources have come to existence to enhance our nations’ library and information infrastructures. ASEAN,digging its objective for a better economy, advances all the nations concerned, for bringing about exchange in productsand to technological interaction, for instance, in the case of the Philippines which has various raw products, andSingapore which has fully developed industries.

The two countries can actually share their resources which can be converted to an output to advance certainfacilities. If in such way, the library has been given advanced facilities to take care of its materials and to improve itsservices, this would result to Filipinos being inspired more to read as well as to visit libraries. Furthermore, the ASEANcould channel more of its communication as to each nation’s culture, practice and living, which can contribute to thereengineering and advancement of libraries.

To this year’s ASEAN integration, it would be a salute to the nations who initiated such, to whom Filipinosowed gratitude for being a part of it. Though, it is hard to reach global integration, ASEAN took part in proving thatthere is progress if there is unity. The ASEAN Libraries, as minion of the ASEAN itself, shall encourage participationand collaboration from the ASEAN Region towards globalization. Finally, it is not just the institution itself that shallexert effort for the aim of development but more importantly, “you”, the Filipino Reader should take part and be a“catalyst” of societal advancement.
