Tools that come with the PC and Mac operating systems, give basic help. If you need advanced tools for your daily use, we aim to help find the right solution for you.

We aim to provide a high level of support to all users, including those who have disabilities.

Changes can be made on Institute PCs and Macs to assist with individuals needs.

High ContrastYou can change the contrast, use of colour and font format, to help you read the screen more easily.

MagnifierYou can magnify portions of the screen to make viewing clearer and larger.

NarratorThis is a text to speech program, which will read the contents of the screen or your documents aloud.

ToggleKeysThis tool allows you to set sounds to warn you when Caps Lock, Num Lock, and Scroll Lock are depressed.

Windows Accessibility Wizard Windows comes with an accessibility wizard. Which will guide you through the options of selecting tools for better visibility, hearing and mobility.

SoundSentrySoundSentry displays a visual warning, such as a blinking program window, when your computer’s built-in speaker makes a sound.

ShowSoundsShowSounds instructs programs to provide visual cues, such as informative icons or text, for events that are normally only indicated by a sound.

Sound SchemesUse sound schemes to assign custom sounds to events. People who have difficulty hearing sounds within a certain frequency can use sound schemes to adjust system and program sounds to make them more audible.

FilterKeysFilterKeys,can tell windows to ignore brief or repeated keystrokes.

MouseKeysMouseKeys, can control the pointer with the numeric keypad on your keyboard.

On-screen KeyboardUsers can type by using a pointing device, such a mouse.

SerialKeysEnables you to press the Shift, CTRL, ALT or Windows key and have it remain active until another key is pressed.

Zoom FeatureThe Zoom feature magnifies the screen up totwenty times its original size, and automatically follows the mouse cursor.

DisplayYou can control the contrast of the screen display and switch the screen colour to black & white, or grey scale. Helping with screen visibility.

Scalable CursorYou can re-size the mouse cursor, regardless of screen size, so it is easier to locate and use.

Mac OSX Universal AccessMac OSX comes with Universal Access. A built in suite of solutions that help people with Visibility, hearing, and mobility impairments.

Voice Over – Spoken InterfaceThis tool narrates what is happening on the screen. It will also read the contents of your documents and allows you to give commands in speech. Providing full keyboard navigation, it also displays what the computer is saying in large print on the screen.

Custom BeepYou can choose a custom system beep alert, and customise the volume. You can also set the alert beep at a different volume to the system beep.

Unique SoundsChoose unique sounds and set the volume as required for unique system events.

Screen FlashInstead of using an audio system beep, you can set your computer to flash the screen to alert you.

Ignore Track pad inputTemporarily disable the built in track pad, when using mouse keys, to avoid intentionally moving the cursor.

Mouse KeysMouse keys let you use the numeric keypad instead of the mouse. You can move, click, double click, and click and drag with this function.

Sticky KeysThis function allows you to see each key in its sequence on screen. So you can correct and verify the sequence before you execute it.

Speech RecognitionA built in speech recognition system allows you to speak commands instead of typing them.

Full Keyboard AccessAllows you to take total control of the keyboard, without having the need for a mouse, or other pointing device.

There are a number of third party solutions available on PC and Mac, for those who require advanced tools.

However, currently there are no specific tools for the hearing impaired. Listed below are third party options currently available on the market.
