Disability Action has launched a new training programme and website for the Health andSocial Care sector, which aims to improve access to health and social care for people withdisabilities. The new training programme entitled Developing a Disability and HumanRights Approach to Health and Social Care and website www.disabilityhealthtoolkit.org were launched on 28 June.

Access to health and social care was identified as an area of key concern by people withdisabilities in a preliminary scoping study, by Disability Action, of disabled peopleshuman rights in Northern Ireland. People with disabilities identified barriers such asquestions over their capacity to make decisions, inaccessible communication, poor physicalaccess and a lack of understanding among health and social care professionals of the rightapproach.

Disability Actions new training programme has been designed to enable the health andsocial care sector to tackle these barriers. It considers the barriers faced by people withdisabilities, how a rights-based approach to disability can be used to remove these barriers

and the practical steps that can taken by the sector to ensure equal access to health andsocial care for everyone.
