  • 8Has this ever happened to you? Things are going great

on your build and then something that you did earlier

comes back to bite you. Something that had no right

way to do it when you started, but now turns out to be

wrong? As some of you may know, in my spare time (LOL),

I like to restore vintage dirt bikes.

My latest project is a 78 Husqvarna 390OR. It started out

as a $350 bargain that has ballooned into a bike that I have

put nearly $3,000 into, but has turned out great.

The build went sideways all because of the motor mount

bolts. When I first installed them in the engine, I decided to

put them in left to right. There was no thought other than

having them all going in the same direction (yeah, Im OCD

that way). I even used new 13mm Nylok nuts. The only hitch is that the lower rear

bolt needed to be installed onto the engine mount bracket first. Once the engine is

installed, there is no way to remove it; it will hit the frame before it slides far enough

to come out. It is the only one out of eight that is like that.

While the Husky engineers did a great job on the bike, one thing they didnt think to

include was a chain tensioner. No problem, UpTite Husky offered one. While it took

George Erl a while to cobble one together, he was able to find the pieces and handed

    me one ready to install.

Anyway, I gleefully ran back to my garage to install the tensioner. The instructions

say that it bolts right on and all that is required is to pull the bolt holding the brake

arm/brake link and put it on. Sounded easy enough. I pulled the bolt, and then get on

the floor and under the bike. I slid the tensioner into place or at least tried to. The

seemingly unimportant which way to put the bolts in decision now came back to

haunt me. The nut on the lower rear motor mount bolt is in the way. If Id have put

them in so the head of the bolt was there: no problem. As it stands: problem.

I tried everything, but yep, I had to pull the engine out just to reposition that one

bolt. Argh! Im sure that the neighbors (or anyone within earshot) knew something

was amiss. Thats what comes with wrenching on stuff though.

If you have a story like this, let us know. We all like to hear about what it took to get

your rig trail/race ready and what trials and tribulations you had to go through just to

take it out and abuse it. Send them to me at [email protected], and

Ill put them up on our website www.fourwheeler.com and our Dirt Sports + Off-Road

Facebook page for all to read.

Until then, have fun, be safe, and well see you next month.

Continuing to add to its growing list of sponsor part-

nerships, SCORE International has announced that

Coyne Powersports Group has been selected as

the Official Powersports Supplier of both SCORE and the

    SCORE World Desert Championship.

The unique special vendor program sponsorship includes

exclusive discounts to members of SCORE and their extend-

ing racing groups as well as a special discount program for

other SCORE sponsors as well as race team sponsors. The

discount programs including the vehicles, accessories, and

hard parts. With myself being an avid off-road enthusiast,

we stay involved in the sport of off-road racing on many lev-

els, and most recently our Coyne Motorsports Complex in the

Imperial Valley hosted two SCORE events in 2014.

The Coyne family of dealerships have long been taking care

of our sports most recognizable names like, Bryce Menzies,

Jeremy McGrath, Terrible Herbst Motorsports, Larry Roeseler,

Steven Eugenio, McMillin Racing, Mills Racing, Curt Leduc,

Brian Deegan, and Robby Gordon to name a few. As former

SCORE racers ourselves, Travis and I are honored to develop

this special program not only with SCORE itself, but with the

entire SCORE racing family as well, Marty Coyne says.

Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame has brought on Mark

McMillin to take the baton from Rod Hall, who has been

in the position of leading ORMHOF for 14 years. Mark

McMillin is the president of the Corky McMillin companies in

San Diego and a veteran off-road racer with five Baja 1000 over-

all wins. Rod Hall will continue in the role of vice-chairman.

I believe that The ORMHOF is necessary to acknowledge

those who have brought and continue to bring greatness to

the sport and industry that I love and enjoy, McMillin says. I

look forward to taking over what Rod Hall started 14 years ago.

With the great foundation he has created, we can continue to

build ORMHOF bigger and better. I look forward to working

with the board of directors and working with existing and new

sponsors as we move into 2015.

Not so at GAS. GAS stands for Galpin Auto Sports,

and its an offshoot of the many Galpin dealerships. At GAS,

That, and a really bright paint scheme.

    There have been some famous

    names historically associated with Ford

Performance, but Jack Roush is as big

as they come. Roush engines are known

for power and reliability, so it comes as

no surprise that GAS has a long-standing

relationship with Roush and chose to use

Roush components in this 6.2L 2V SOHC

    V-8 engine-equipped Raptor build.

Raptors are no slouches stock, but

with the inclusion of a Roush super-

charger and cold air intake/air filter, as

well as a Roush Performance cat-back

    exhaust, the horsepower numbers rose

appreciably. The truck now puts out 590

hp with 560 lb-ft of torque.

    Superchargers compress air/fuel into

    the compression chambers, which is

good, but any pre-detonation is not.

Things melt and develop holes under

those circumstances. Thats why a Snow

    Performance Water/Methanol Kit is used.

The system gives a shot of water/metha-

nol when the system feels that heat

could be a problem. We know, injecting

    water seems counterintuitive to making

horsepower, but the Snow system works.

But as much as GAS wanted this Raptor

to fly, they also wanted it to have an off-

road suspension that was worthy of the rest

of the truck. To that end, they called Icon

Performance. Icon installed their Stage 2

Suspension System. It consists of a new bil-

let upper control arms that feature uniballs

that are matched with a set of Icon SVT

    Zeta 3.0 external reservoir shocks.

The rear suspension sees a set of Icon

rear springs along with Icon SVT Zeta 3.0

    piggyback-style reservoir shocks. The

travel is increased slightly, but the Icon

system adds more in the way of con-

trolled action and adjustability than just

    numbers alone.

For as off-road worthy as they really are,

the interior of a Raptor is pretty plush.

GAS didnt do changes as much as they

    did refinements.

    ABOVE:

    The Roush Performance cat-back

exhaust ensures that the spent fuel is

    exited quickly.

    GIVING IT THE GAS

Replaced also are the stock rims. In

    their place are 20-inch ADV1 ADV6TFSL

off-road wheels (20x10.5) that have been

equipped with full off-road worthy Nitto

    EXO Grappler Tires (35x12.50R20). This

    combination, especially thanks to the

color of the ADV1 wheels, has both the

look of a classic racer (think Stroppe

Bronco) with the upgraded abilities of

    modern technology.

GAS wanted to add performance to

this Raptor, so they figured that they

really didnt need to do anything to the

interior other than items related to per-

formance upgrades, or really: to keep an

eye on the performance upgrades. That

is done with pod-mounted Pro Sport

EVO digital gauges that join the control

panel for the Snow water/methanol injec-

tion system along the top of the dash.

GAS did upgrade the stereo system

too, and that counts as a performance

upgrade in our book. They added an

Audison Audio system that includes a

    four- channel amp/sound processor, new

door panel speakers and a 10-inch sub-

woofer that resides in a custom enclo-

sure beneath the rear seat. The system

puts out much more boom than stock.

Hey, were still talking power, and whats

    not to like about that.

The neon blue wrap on the originally

refrigerator white Raptor may be another

matter. Were not sure why its called

    Conform Chrome Blue Wrap (Avery

    Dennison material), because conform it

does not. Its more like it jumps out at

you. But GAS did build this truck to get

    noticed.

Some tricks they added were more for

go, however; the Road Armor front and

rear Stealth Bumpers are there to keep

the truck protected while the Lazer Star

LED lights are there to turn night into

day. The lights, such as the cool custom

LED headlights by The Lighting Firm,

are more for show, but they do project a

    stronger beam than stock.

FEATUREFEATURE The GAS crew at Galpin have taken what they knowbuilding high-perfor-mance vehiclesand done something

to this Raptor that many may like and

some will find a bit too hot rod for their

tastes. One thing that cant be disputed

is that the upgrades that they have done

to the Raptor enhance an already highly

WORDS AND IMAGES // JAY KOPYCINSKI

97-03 models before Ford swapped to

rack-and-pinion steering. We picked up a

power steering repair kit and set to work

rebuilding the Ford steering box. In gen-

eral, we replaced all the internal seals and

O-rings, lubing each liberally with power

steering fluid to help slip them in place

and help with the initial assembly seal.

Our box had no significant shaft play

and all the bearings were in good shape,

so we kept them. If needed, most of the

roller bearings can be replaced as well.

Should you not want to lay out the

cash for a fully rebuilt box and want to

do the rebuild yourself, follow along as

we show you the steps we took. And,

if you dont own an F-150, but still have

steering box issues, what we show here

is applicable to many similar power

steering boxes. So, you should get a

pretty good idea whats involved in a

    reseal or rebuild.

If youve had trouble with your power

steering box, whether it is some

groaning and moaning, play in the

sector shaft, or simply fluid weeping

and seeping near the pitman arm, we

might have a cure for your ailment. That

is, if you want to do your own rebuild.

    Read on.

We had the occasion to do some repair

work on a leaky F-150 power steering

box. This particular box was used on

  • ABOVE:

We placed the steering box in a vise for

    support and started the disassembly.

First, we centered the steering box

movement, and then removed the four

bolts securing the sector shaft cover.

The lower shaft was tapped with a mal-

let and the sector shaft assembly pulled

    from the main housing.

    ABOVE:

Heres the removed sector shaft and its

cover, which can be unthreaded once

the locking nut has been removed. We

inspected the shaft splines for signs of

twisting, the bearing surfaces for dam-

age, and the gear teeth for signs of chip-

ping or other wear. Ours was in good

    condition.

    ABOVE:

Next, the four bolts securing the valve

housing to the main housing were

removed, allowing us to pull the valve

housing and the large piston assembly

from the box. We were careful not to let

the piston rotate and unscrew from the

    valve housing.

    ABOVE:

Lastly, we removed the sector shaft dust

seal, snap ring, steel spacer, and oil seal

from the lower part of the main housing.

Here, you want to inspect the roller bear-

ing in the housing for signs of wear or

water damage, and replace if necessary.

At this point, the box was stripped down.

We cleaned and inspected the large pis-

ton bore for wear or damage. If youre

simply replacing the sector shaft seals,

you could stop the disassembly here.

    ABOVE:

Here is the valve housing (left) and the

piston (right). They are mated with the

worm shaft of the spool valve and ride

on each other using steel ball bearings.

Dealing with all the loose ball bearings

is usually the intimidating part of a

    steering box rebuild.

    ABOVE:

We removed the two bolts securing the

ball return guide clamp and removed the

guide to retrieve the ball bearings inside.

We carefully unscrewed the worm shaft

from the piston, allowing the remaining

ball bearings to drop into the piston.

There should be a total of 28 balls for

    this particular box.

    ABOVE:

We held the valve housing in a vise and

removed the small set screw that retains

the adjusting nut that secures the spool

valve in the valve housing. There is a

special splined tool that fits the slots in

the nut, but we were able to loosen and

spin the nut with a punch.

    ABOVE:

Here the spool valve is being pulled from

the valve housing. At this point, you

want to inspect the worm gear grooves

and their compliment grooves in the pis-

ton for signs of scarring or wear.

  • LEFT:

    The valve housing uses a

    dust seal, snap ring, and

oil seal. Each of these was

    pulled for replacement.

    After cleaning the valve

    housing, we inspected the

    roller bearing and the inte-

    rior cylinder wall where

    the seals ride.

    ABOVE:

With new seals installed on the spool

valve and it lubricated, it was carefully

slid back into the valve housing while

rotating it. We were careful to make sure

the seals entered the housing smoothly

and did not become nicked or twisted.

The locking nut and set screw were rein-

    stalled. Recommended torque for the

    nut is 55 to 90 lb-ft.

    ABOVE:

The worm shaft was threaded back into

the piston, and it was time to reinsert

the ball bearings. This design has an

insertion hole in the ball return guide

as shown here. We added a little grease

and held the ball return guide gently

in the piston holes while we fed each

of the 28 balls into the assembly. This

required a little wiggling and movement

of the piston to work each ball down

    into the worm threads.

    ABOVE:

Once the balls were all inserted, we

bolted the return guide clamp in place to

retain the balls and checked for smooth

turning movement of the worm shaft in

the piston (no more than 3 turns). We

installed a new valve housing o-ring.

    ABOVE:

We removed the Teflon piston ring and

    its underlying o-ring, then replaced

them with new ones after cleaning and

    inspecting the piston.

    ABOVE:

Here is the complete spool valve. Each

of the four Teflon piston seals was

removed and replaced with new seals.

The seals were dipped in power steering

fluid and then carefully stretched over

the body into their respective grooves,

being careful not to stretch the Teflon

    seals excessively, nor nick them.

    ABOVE:

A fresh oil seal, snap ring, and dust seal

were installed in the valve housing. The

dust seal should be installed with the

    rubber side facing out.

The sector shaft was slid into the main

housing and mated to the piston teeth.

Once it was slid in place and seated, the

From the times of Manny Esquerra to

the present day, the Ford Ranger has

proved itself to be one of the most

    enduring platforms in off-road racing.

From full-blown racers, like Keith Smiths

94 model presented here, to untold pre-

runners around the world, the Ranger

is hugely popular thanks to it being

    tough, capable, and easy to

modified at Newline, the project sat for

several years and went through several

owners. When looking to upgrade and

have a new race truck built, SDR rac-

ing saw the potential in the project and

purchased the chassis that had been

    acquired by SI Motorsports.

    SI Motorsports then started where

Newline left off and completed the rest

of the chassis, shocks mounts, motor

mounts, front and rear suspension, and

everything in between. Prior to assem-

bly, every part on the truck, including the

entire chassis was either electroless nickel-

plated or powdercoated by PSC in Chino,

California, to save on prep time and

    unnecessary wear on parts.

    The frontend utilizes SI

    Motorsports equal-length

    I-beams/radius arms that fea-

    ture equal-length steering. To

those, a set of SI Motorsports Billet king

pin spindles were attached, and a King

    Shocks 3.0 coilover and one 3.5 six-tube

    bypass shock were installed.

The rear suspension utilizes an SI

Motorsports bolt on four-link, to which

    a Currie custom-fabricated 4130 hous-

ing, modified by SI, is bolted. A Currie

custom 10-inch third member with 5:14

gears is whats mounted to the housing.

King is again the shock brand of choice

with King Shocks 3.0 coilover and 3.5 sev-

en-tube bypass shocks found per wheel.

Speaking of per wheel, the brakes on all

four corners are identical CNC 630 four-

piston-per-caliper units, all of which are

pumped with a Brembo master cylinder.

Again, identical on all four corners are

Smith, of SDR Racing in Hermosa

Beach, California, wanted to have a killer

race truck for a season or two, and then

use it to prerun the various racecourses

that hell find himself on. Those roles are

two areas where the Ranger excels.

The 94 Ranger chassis was ini-

tially started by NewLine Products in

Anaheim, California, which is the sister

shop to SI Motorsports of Santa Fe

Springs, California. After having the inte-

rior cage built and original Ranger frame

    One reason for the good

    handling characteristics

    of the I-beam suspension

    is that the steering bars

    are of equal length.

    38

a respectable 20 inches in the front with

a solid 25 inches in the rear.

The stock steel cab has been

enhanced with a fiberglass front clip

and rear fenders. LA Wraps of Torrance,

    California, did the paintjob.

Rigid Industries LED front and rear

lightbars are used to light the way.

Theres only the one bar on the front push

cage, but were sure that a few more Rigid

units will be in place before long.

No one would ever think that the inte-

rior of a Ranger is spacious, and it seems

that the Sparco race seats, along with

the full cage, takes up most of the room.

The other large interior item is a custom-

built aluminum dash by Curt Beam of

CRB Alumifab that is truly a work of art.

    Housing dual Racepak instrument pan-

els, along with the Lowrance GPS unit

and Winters shifter, its actually sculpted

to give extra knee clearance for the

    occupantsa good thing when bouncing

around the desert. CRB also built the alu-

    minum radiator protection shroud, door

    panels and window covers.

The beautiful dash also houses the

    communications system, which con-

sists of a PCI Intercom and Kenwood

Race Radio as well as a switch panel,

all of which was wired by BDR. The

Mastercraft race harnesses keep a hold

of the occupants while the driver holds

onto a MOMO steering wheel and works

the custom 4130 SI Motorsports brake

pedal assembly. The fresh air system

    comes from PCI.

The one area where the Ford purist

will howl is with Smiths choice of pow-

    erplant: Yep, its a GM LS3. A 2014 edi-

tion, it displaces 420 ci and is fed with a

FAST LSX-R fuel injection system. Dual

UMP Air cleaners that are part of the

custom cold air intake system built by SI

Motorsports provides the clean air, while

a set of custom stainless steel headers

and the exhaust was fabricated by Mike

    Davis.

The GM LS3 was built by Redline

    Performance of Anaheim, California, and

    produces a dyno-proven 610 horses. To

keep the water cool, a Ron Davis radiator

is used and Fluidyne takes care of the hot

oil. A huge Fuel Safe fuel cell (with a Kevlar

bladder) takes up most of the room in the

area where the bed would be, but provided

plenty of fuel. That fuel is moved thanks to

    the Aeromotive pumps and filters.

    A full race-ready Culhane Turbo 400

transmission puts the power to the

rearend, which is done via a Drivelines

    Incorporated driveshaft. The trans is

    cooled with another Fluidyne unit.

What was begun by Newline Products

and finished off by SI Motorsports has

turned into one of the finest Rangers that

youll find, and were sure that the SDR

Racing family got what they were look-

ing for. This is a meticulously built race

truck that will last for seasons to come

    and, hopefully for SDR, championship

    after championship.

The 2015 Mint 400 is quickly

    becoming a must-race event on

    many racers busy schedules.

    Owned and operated by the

    Martelli Brothers, the series

    utilizes the brothers creative agency,

Mad Media to promote the event. The

Martellis also contract Casey Folks and

the Best in the Desert racing organiza-

tion to run logistics and race control for

the Mint. Folks has the ability get race

permits signed off by the many govern-

mental agencies and is well liked across

    Nevada.

RICH HISTORYThe Mint 400 started in 1974 as an idea

by Norm Johnson, owner of the defunct

Mint hotel, as a public relations stunt to pro-

mote the hotels annual deer hunt. It wasnt

long and soon the Mint ballooned into a

legitimate race. Mint Hotel public relations

director KJ Howe became race director.

The Mint 400 race attracted all kinds of

    celebrities, famous racers, and Hollywood

film types. Howe had friends all over

Hollywood. Of course with those celebri-

ties came plenty of media attention. Howe

decided he needed girls to help to promote

the event and the Miss Mint contest was

born. Vanna White got her start as a Miss

Mint girl, Howe says. The military even

got involved parading a tank right down the

center of Fremont Street. In 1988 the Mint

hotel was sold and everything ended.

THE REVIVALIn 2008, local Nevada race organization

SNORE revived The Great American Race

known as the Mint 400. KJ Howe came

back as the grand marshal that year, the

city of Las Vegas and the Fremont Street

THE 2015 MINT 400 MAXES OUT ENTRIES

Experience got involved bringing the event

right back to its roots in downtown Las

Vegas. Over the next several years contin-

gency sponsors lined Fremont Street as

    vehicles historically paraded through the

area. Drivers signed autographs at meet

and greets. Its with the help of a high-rank-

ing police official that racers can now drive

their vehicles right down the strip in front of

hundreds of thousands of people in a police

escort all the way to Fremont Street. On

a recent Wednesday afternoon in March,

tourists from all over the world crowded

on bridges and sidewalks up and down the

strip getting their first experience of what a

900hp truck sounds and looks like up close.

MAXED OUTThe Mint 400 attracts racers from all

classes. Buggies, UTVs, and, of course,

Trophy Trucks, or Trick-Trucks as Best

in the Desert names them. Just three

weeks before the race, entries reached

their max cap at 330 meaning anybody

else sending in an entry to the race will

be placed on a waiting list. Title sponsor

Polaris has come on board for 2015 and

everyone is invited to the party. What a

party it was! There was a pit crew chal-

lenge to see which crew could do the

fastest tire change. The highlight of the

night was the crowning of Miss Mint

    400. The honors went to Amy Scott from

    Solana Beach, California.

THE 2015 MINT 400 MAXES OUT ENTRIES

BIG DUSTYWhen you attend all the events sur-

rounding the Mint 400, its hard to

believe there is still a race to be run.

In a city that never sleeps and casinos

that never close, a 6 a.m. start time can

come fast and furious. For limited race

car drivers, that means skipping the fun

at the blackjack table and early to bed.

The wind must have stayed out late and

slept all day because there was none.

No wind means the dust hangs in the

air creating visibility issues. Racers also

push their vehicles to the limits at high

speeds. Safety is taken very seriously.

According to a statement released by

the Mint 400, two racers were involved

in a multi-vehicle accident. The race was

    temporarily stopped while the racers

received medical attention and flown by

air to local hospitals. They are expected

to recover. The safety of our racers is

    paramount, Matt Martelli says. When

the race resumed, so did the dust. Just

before pit A, racers battled almost zero

visibility conditions. Of course none of

that matters when you are out front and

have clean air. Justin Lofton managed

to do just that. Got out front and went

for the home run. Lofton who was only

in his second race in a brand-new Jimco

built Trick Truck, overalled the 2015 Mint

    400. At the finish line Lofton was show-

ered with oversize checks and purpose

built trophies. The Great American Race

    is back bigger than ever.

They say you dont know how fast you can go

until you crash. Lets face it: Ouch is a four-

letter word. So when you crash (and we all

crash eventually), its possibly going to hurt.

Like they say, thats racing. But with a few precau-

tions, the amount hurt can be greatly diminished.

Its all in how prepared to you are for the inevitable.

We dont know about you, but we dress to

crash. We want to have fun, go as fast as we can

and then get up and go back to work on Monday.

The producers in this guide have made it their
