Dirk Nowitzki was born on June 19, 1978, in Wurzburg, Germany.

Nowitzki’s father, mother, and older sister all were athletic and became professional athletes.

At first, Dirk played handball and tennis but was called a freak for his height and went to basketball.

Nowitzki played professional basketball in Germany, but eventually looked to the NBA. In the 1998 NBA draft, the Milwaukee Bucks picked Nowitzki as the 9th pick in the first round. Soon after, he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks.

At first, Nowitzki had a rough time, he only averaged 8.2 points and 3.4 rebounds in 20.4 minutes of playing.

On January 4, 2000, Mark Cuban bought the Dallas Mavericks for $280 million. After Cuban bought the “Mavs”, Nowitzki’s game vastly improved. He then averaged, 17.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists in 35.8 minutes.

After that, nine seasons went by and Nowitzki got better. The Mavericks made it to the playoffs every year, but sadly did not win.

In the 2010- 2011 season all of Nowitzki’s work paid off. The Mavericks went all of the way to the NBA Finals, faced the Heat, and won.

In game four of the finals, the Heat were winning the series 2-1. Even though he had a 101 degree fever, Nowitzki made the game winning basket to tie it 2-2.

In the series, Dirk scored 62 combined fourth quarter points in 6 fourth quarters. That was equal to the combination of what Dwayne Wade and LeBron James scored in the fourth quarter.

In the end, Nowitzki was named the finals MVP. He had a average of 27.7 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 2.5 assists in the playoffs.

Dirk makes 88% of his free throws, 50% of his field goals, and 40% of his three pointers.

One fact about Nowitzki is that his averages in the post season are significantly higher than in the regular season. They go from 22.9 points and 8.3 rebounds to 28.8 points and 11.8 rebounds.
