ABSTRACT

This report is a compilation of significant research facilities used by geoscience departments in Australian universities and institutes of technology. Information from 21 institutions has been recorded. Because of the range and complexity of research equipment, only basic data on each facility has been included: manufacturer and model, year of acquisition, and where it is located.

INTRODUCTION

This report is a compilation of significant research facil it ies currently used by and/or maintained by geoscience departments within Australian universities. It is intended primarily for use by research workers as a reference directory for the dissemination of information on the distribution of important research facilit ies in the geosciences.

Information in this report was obtained from questionnaires submitted to all Australian university geoscience departments. Compiled data was re-submitted to each department head for final revisions prior to publication. All 16 universities and 5 institutes with geoscience departments have been included. Colleges of advanced education have been excluded, although possible future editions of the directory may include those institutions. The author accepts full responsibility for any omissions or errors in the directory and hopes that these may be remedied in future editions.

It is unfortunate that many valuable and essential facil it ies such as resources limited primarily to teaching, and backup or support could not be included in this directory. These include rock and mineral preparation laboratories, sample preparation and thin section laboratories, field equipment and vehicles, and photographic equipment and facilities. Basic equipment essential to the operation of all geoscience departments, such as optical microscopes and micro-computers, have also been excluded on the assumption that all departments maintain these facil it ies to varying extents.

Due to the broad range and ever-increasing capabilities and applications of research equipment, only the more generalized aspects of each facil ity have been included, viz. manufacturer and model, year of acquisition, and where located. For specific usages and applications, it is suggested that the interested reader enquire directly to the relevant university geoscience department.

Because of the high purchase and operating costs of many research facil it ies, and in an effort to avoid costly duplication of those facilit ies within individual universities, there has developed a trend by universities to operate and maintain significant apparatus in a central science facil i ty accessible to all departments within the individual universities. The locations of the facilit ies listed in this report are indicated where appropriate. These are coded as: Department housed (D), Central science facil i ty (C), shared with one other department (5), and accessible but maintained by a different department (A). Blank spaces indicate that insufficient information was supplied by the various institutions.
