This directory provides a sense of thevital role colleges play in our economy,communities and society, as well asoffering a perspective on how they canmake a huge contribution to oureconomic growth and social mobility.

There is a college in every majorcommunity in Yorkshire and theHumber, and they demonstrate veryclearly the empowering qualities of acollege education. They give adults theskills to find new jobs, and deliver theA-levels, degrees and professionalqualifications that employers need.

College success rates have improvedsignificantly for students of all ages.Colleges inspire and engage the disaffectedwhile at the same time meeting the needs ofhigh-achieving students. They have shown acapacity for responsiveness in theirwillingness to meet the needs of businesses,employers and students.

These are difficult times financially, and theentire public sector is expected to take itsshare of the pain. At the same time, Britain isrecovering from recession and requires theskills and innovation to ensure that oureconomic recovery is matched by a betterskilled workforce. Colleges are well placed tosupport that recovery.

In this directory, we provide a snapshot ofcolleges today, providing some of the keyfacts and a real sense of the value of theircontribution.

Yorkshire and the Humber has 35 colleges,comprising general FE (21), sixth form (eight)and specialist (six). Each year they providemore than 238,000 students with learningopportunities in subjects as diverse asaerospace engineering, textiles, basic skills,applied maths, equine skills and floristry.

For more than 100,000 young people eachyear, colleges are their first-choice option foreither academic or vocational courses.Overall, 137,000 adults choose to study in ourcolleges, acquiring the skills andqualifications that enable them to pursuespecific careers or retrain for newopportunities.

Higher education is provided by 22 of theregion’s colleges and 20,000 students chooseto obtain a degree in this way.

Colleges make a significant contribution tothe economy of Yorkshire and the Humber.Collectively, they employ more than 25,000people and have an annual turnover of £777 million.

London 2012 proved to be a golden successstory for colleges in Yorkshire and theHumber. Six of Britain’s Olympic andParalympic gold medals were won by alumnifrom the region’s colleges. In addition therewere many other medallists and competitorsfrom the further education sector in Y&H.

Former Bradford College student NicolaAdams made history by becoming the first-ever Olympic women’s boxing champion.

Nicola, who was the first athlete to gothrough the Bradford Police and CollegeAcademy Boxing Club, dispatched the three-time world champion, China’s Ren Cancan,in the flyweight final.

College principal Michele Sutton said: “Weare so proud of Nicola’s amazingachievement. She is an inspiration to thecollege community as well as to all aspiringsports men and women.”

Nicola is also a former student of Leeds CityCollege, where she studied for a NationalDiploma in Software and Development.

It was a double gold success for DearneValley College, where boxing championsLuke Campbell and Anthony Joshua studiedfor their fitness instructor qualifications.

Luke won the bantamweight final whileAnthony took the super heavyweight title.

There were celebrations at Kirklees Collegeafter Ed Clancy led Britain’s cyclists to goldenglory in the team pursuit and took a bronzemedal in the individual omnium. Ed was astudent on the BTEC Public Services courseat the former Huddersfield Technical College.

Principal Peter McCann said he hoped thatEd’s success would inspire others, adding:“He has proved that anything is possible withenough focus, determination and the right

support and direction. We are incrediblyproud of his achievements.”

Finally, it was success at the double forformer Calderdale College student HannahCockroft, who won two gold medals.Wheelchair racer Hannah powered to victoryin the T34 100m and 200m. She also becamethe first Paralympic athlete to break a worldrecord in the Olympic Stadium with her timeof 18.05 seconds in the 100m.

Hannah completed a Level 2 Diploma inSport at Calderdale College, which honouredher with an Inspire Award in 2011.

Principal Chris Jones said: “We are extremelyproud of Hannah’s success. Staff andstudents cheered her on while watching heron the screens in the college cafe, and wehave been celebrating her achievements eversince.”

The Association ofColleges (AoC)represents andpromotes the interestsof colleges and

provides members with professional supportservices. It aims to be the authoritative voiceof colleges – based on credible analysis,research, advocacy and consultation withcolleges – and the first-choice destination forguidance and advice for members.

AoC was established in 1996 by collegesthemselves as a voice for further educationand higher education delivered in colleges atnational and regional level.

AoC Y&H champions the region’s 35 membercolleges and supports them in deliveringmaximum social and economic benefit forpeople, businesses and communities. It has four key objectives:

� To raise awareness about, improve theimage of and enhance the reputation of thesector.

� To represent the sector and influenceeducation and skills policy.

� To support members through information,advice and events.

� To be a fully consultative membershiporganisation.

The work of AoC Y&H is guided anddirected by the Regional Committee,comprising principals and chairs of collegesfrom across the region.

Members are elected by the collegesthemselves to work on their behalf.

AoC Y&H also organises and contributes toa range of regional networks and forumswhich enable senior managers to shareinformation, disseminate good practice andreceive regular updates from key nationaland regional bodies.

Bradford College

Notre Dame Catholic Sixth Form College wasformed in 1989 to serve as the sixth formcentre for Catholic education in Leeds. Themajority of its 1,700 students are from Catholichigh schools and Catholic backgrounds, butthe overall intake is highly inclusive and hasstrong representation from many BME groups.

It also provides highly effective post-16progression for many students from inner-cityLeeds.

Notre Dame offers courses in more than 30 A-level subjects, GCSEs and a variety ofvocational courses, and enjoys very highlevels of examination success. The pass rateat A-level is approaching 99%, and at AS-levelis more than 90%. The achievement rate forvocational courses at Levels 2 and 3 isoutstanding.
