PAUL HARRIS Paul P. Harris (1868-1947), a lawyer was the founder of Rotary. Born in Racine, Wisconsin, USA on April 19, 1868, Paul was second of six children of George and Conelia Harris. At the age of three he moved to Wallingford, Vermont where he grew up in the care of his Maternal grandparents. Married to Jean Thomson Harris (1881-1963), they had no children. He received a L.L.B. from University of Law and received an Honorary L.L.D. from the University of Vermont. Paul Harris worked as a newspaper reporter, a business teacher, a cowboy and travelled extensively in the USA and Europe selling marble and granite. In 1896 he went to Chicago to practice Law. One evening, after dinner, as Paul and his friend strolled through the neighbourhood , he was introduced to various tradesmen in their stores. This reminded Paul of his New England Village and it occurred to him “Why not have a fellowship composed of businessmen from different occupations, without restriction of politics and religions?” On 23 February 1905 Paul Harris formed the first club with three other businessmen. Paul Harris named the new club “ROTARY” because members met by rotation at their various places of business. Club membership grew rapidly. Many members were from small towns. In the Rotary Club, they found the opportunity for camaraderie. When Paul Harris became the President of the club in its third year convinced of its role he strove to extend Rotary to other cities. The second Rotary Club was founded in San Francisco in 1908. When there were 16

clubs: the National Association of Rotary Clubs was organised. When clubs were

formed in Canada and Great Britain in 1912 the name was changed to International

Association of Rotary Clubs, and in 1922 shortened to Rotary International. Paul

Harris was the first President of the National Association and the International

Association. Two world wars changed the face of Rotary. Eastern Europe was closed

to Rotary until 1989, when clubs were re-established in Poland and Hungary. In

1990, the first club was opened in the Soviet Union. When Paul Harris passed away

on 27 January 1947, his dream had grown from an informal meeting of four to

some 6000 clubs brought together through the service and fellowship of Rotary.

DISTRICT GOVERNOR ELECT - ADELE HUGHES (WADE)

Born in the lovely little north Queensland town of Ingham, Adele’s family transferred around, until at the age of 13, Gladstone became the family’s first permanent home.

Adele worked as a receptionist at a Doctor’s surgery, and in administration at the Gladstone Hospital. She met and married a dashing young hockey player, Wade Hughes. They have 4 children, 4 children-in-law and 10 grandchildren, who are the delight of their lives.

In 1978 they established their first business - a printing firm, which has run successfully for the past 40 years, and in 1997 they also established a Funeral Home, which Adele manages.

Wade became a Rotarian in the RC of Gladstone in 1993, and Adele subsequently joined the RC of Gladstone Midday in 1999. Both have been Presidents and Directors over the years, with Adele also doing stints as Secretary.

In 2012 Adele and Wade attended the International Convention in Bangkok, and then also attended the Convention in Sydney in 2014. Adele undertook a trip to Kenya to peruse a potential RAWCS project in 2014. This was followed by another in 2015; a Polio Vaccination trip to India, where they also built a dam (by hand) in 2016. They then took part in a Helping Hands project in Laos in 2017 where one of the prosthetic hands she fitted had been assembled by her grand-daughter here in Gladstone. Over the years Adele and Wade have hosted YEP students, including Jessie from America, Teeranun from Bangkok, Tina from Germany, and Elise from Belgium.

A lifestyle change saw Adele and Wade spending more and more time at the idyllic little haven of Agnes Water and having a desire to bring Rotary to the Discovery Coast. Adele and Wade were instrumental in forming a satellite club of the RC of Gladstone there, Adele subsequently becoming a charter member of the RC of Discovery Coast, in 2016. Adele recently had the honour of organizing the 2017/18 District Conference held at Agnes Water.

Adele was also a founding member of the Inner Wheel Club of Port Curtis in 1999, and has served as President, Secretary and Director.

huge new district of 9560 in July 2021.

The Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) is a training program that seeks to strength-en Rotary Clubs by helping Rotarians to become more knowledgeable about Rotary and more effective leaders in their clubs.

District 9570 is facilitating a series of fast paced, two day, interactive weekend courses in the following locations this year:-

• Mackay Saturday/Sunday August 24-25

• Emerald Saturday/Sunday September 7-8

• Biloela Saturday/Sunday October 12-13

• Bundaberg Saturday/Sunday November 9-10

All Rotarians will benefit from completing this course but it is particularly effective for new members and inexperienced office bearers. WHAT IS INTERACT? Interact is a service club for youth ages 12 to 18 who want to connect with other young people and have fun while serving their communities and learning about the world. Clubs, which meet at least twice a month, are sponsored by local Rotary clubs. Interact clubs organize two projects every year, one that helps their school or community and one that promotes international understanding. Members of sponsor Rotary clubs mentor Interactors as they carry out the projects and develop leadership skills.

AUSTRALIAN ROTARY HEALTH

Australian Rotary Health is a registered charity, conceived by a Rotarian and supported by most Rotary Clubs in Australia. Australian Rotary Health is governed by an honorary Board of Directors and advised by an honorary Research Committee of eminent medical research professionals most of who are not Rotarians. Individuals, workplaces and companies can make donations which are used to fund research grants. Individual donations are tax deductible.

Since 1981 Australian Rotary Health has funded over $40 million of research. Research topics have changed over time to match national priorities. The current area of research is centred on the prevention of mental health disorders in our community. Could you and your club become active in the current Lift the Lid on Mental Illness initiative?

Australian Rotary Health supports these areas of need in our community through:

From the earliest days for the organisation Rotarians were concerned with promoting high ethical standards in their professional lives. One of the world’s most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics is the FOUR WAY TEST, which was created in 1932 by Rotarian Hebert J. Taylor (who later served as RI President) when he was asked to take charge of a company that was facing bankruptcy. This 24 word test for employees to follow in their business and profession, production and advertising and all relation with dealers and customers and the survival of the company is credited to this simple philosophy. The 4 Way Test was adopted by Rotary 1943 and has been translated into more than 100 languages and published in thousands of ways, the messages should be known and followed by all Rotarians.

MARK MALONEY

Dear fellow Rotarians,

When Gay and I began practicing law, we joined my father-in-law, Gilmer Blackburn, in his law firm. He had been practicing law in Decatur, Alabama, for more than 25 years and, in that time, had also served for six years as the mayor of our city. One of the first things he taught us when we joined the firm — something he never stopped teaching, by word and by example — was the importance of paying what he referred to as our “civic rent.”

He considered paying your civic rent an obligation similar to paying your taxes or contributing to your place of worship. You benefit from being here, and those benefits are not free. You need to give something back for the privilege of being part of your community.

Organizations like Rotary allow us to pay our civic rent to our local and global communities. And when we join Rotary — when we work to keep the organization itself strong, when we give back through Rotary with our abilities, our time, and our resources — we are declaring that we know that our presence in this world carries with it the obligation to serve.

All of the service that Rotary does, all of the lives we change, all of the children in the world who will never, ever get polio — all of this happens because we, joining together through Rotary, are strong. Because Rotarians, with the family of Rotary, have risen to the challenge and with each passing year strive to make our world a better place.

As a global organization with over 1.2 million members, Rotary Connects the World. You help make that connection last and ensure both Rotary’s legacy and its future.

Kindest regards,

Mark Daniel Maloney
