AIA Seattle has all course outlines and material already developed, but we need instructors. All classes are in the evening, and all of the above will be co-taught with Johnny Hong, an experienced ARE presenter from Integrus, who will cover the vignettes portion of each session. This program is an important service to our Associate members, and we would very much like to continue to offer all session. Seattle Center Design Ideas Competition Lisa and Danielle are working with Seattle Center to finalize a call for entries by October 21. The focus of the competition: new models for public space. Entries will be sought from around the world. Juries will meet in February and May, with an extensive set of public programs in March and April. We are working on program partnerships with SAM and the UW CBE, among others. Local AIA+2030 Snapshot Session 7 recap- Brian Griffith, AEI and Peter Reppe, Solarc presented on Right sizing: equipment and controls for super efficient buildings on July 22nd 54 attendees /65 Session 8 recap- Jeff Jackson, PAE, Craig Briscoe, ZGF, Ruwan Jayaweera, PAE and Jeremy Smithson, Puget Sound Solar presented on Site Power: renewable energy opportunities on August 19th 45 attendees /65 Energy Forum Survey results are in for the Energy Forum, and it got high marks across the board. Sample comments: “It was inspiring and quite worthwhile.” “Good speakers with a great breadth and depth of subject matter.” Honor Awards Early registration deadline was September 14, and despite the earlier deadline this year, we have met our submittal goal. Still hoping for a few more submittals to bring the total up to last year’s. National AIA+2030 Recent component additions: Huron Valley MI, Las Vegas and NC Triangle, bringing our total component participation to 19. National AIA+2030 Strategic Assessment Committee This committee was formed in May 2011 to examine the future of the AIA+2030 Professional Series national effort and recommend a strategic path moving forward. Report out to the board is expected in Nov or Dec of 2011. The committee continues to meet regularly, have completed their goals exercise and is currently discussing future ownership of the program and is in the middle of a sponsorship campaign. Candidate Forum AIA Seattle’s Public Policy Board partnered with ULI, AGC and CRGBC to host a highly successful and well attended candidate forum September 14 at Miller Hull. All Seattle City Council candidates were there. Questions were focused and thoughtful, and the answers enlightening. The entire program was filmed by the Seattle Channel for broadcast.

Big Sibs Convenes in New York The annual meeting of the Big Sibs, the largest AIA urban chapters, will be held in October in New York. This has always been a great learning opportunity for our chapter. AIA Seattle will be represented by Rick Sundberg, Rico Quirindongo, and Lisa Richmond. Board Committee Reports

Public Policy Board The PPB has formalized its terms of service, and welcomes new 2-year appointee Rebecca Barnes. Thanks go to Bob Shrosbree, founding PPB member, for his great help getting the committee started. PPB member Walter Schacht AIA will be starting terms this week both as the AIA Washington Council representative to the Washington Architects & Engineers Legislative Council (AELC) and as the architect representative to the Governor's Capital Projects Advisory Review Board. Membership Tiger Team Convened by the board at this year’s retreat, the Membership Tiger Team has met twice. Team members Sian Roberts, James Steele, and Phil Duff have begun to outline a membership campaign to help the board reach its membership growth goals in 2012. Member Committee Reports

Design for Aging With our usual summer break upon us, a small group read the book "Neighbor Power" and convened a book club meeting at the Alzheimer's Association headquarters on Queen Anne on August 17th. The author Jim Diers, former head of the Department of Neighborhoods, joined us for a lively discussion of the book, his current travels and speaking engagements, and the relevance of his recent work with Senior Services in organizing discussions at community centers across the area for the "Aging Your Way" series.
