The Role of Parents in the Education of their Child.

The Home is the first Institution of learning in a child's life and parents are the

prime educators. The child is a receptor of all that he sees and hears, and it is

the duty of parents to ensure that their behaviour is impeccable so that the child

imbibes only the best. As the child grows, parents have to grow and evolve to

keep pace with the child's constant quest for knowledge. And in all of this, do

not forget that parents are the first role models for their child. Quality time spent

with the child results in their all-round development along with scholastic

achievement. The footprint of a child's educational journey begins at home.

The support structure that the parents create should hold the child in good

stead as the child embarks on this epic journey called life.

As an educationist, my advice to parents is to spare time from your busy

schedule for your children. Review with them what they have learnt in school.

Reinforce learning by helping your children connect with what they learn, to

everyday life and the world around them. Research has shown that high

self–esteem and academic achievement of a child are closely related to

positive parental involvement in their lives.

Provide your children with a supportive environment to study at home. It is very

important to have a family routine that includes time for completing homework,

family meals and regular bedtime. Parents need to monitor a child's television

and internet time. Care should be taken to ensure that both these tools are

used to enhance a child's learning.

Needless to mention that it should be impressed upon the child that, education

is first on the list of priorities. And it goes without saying that good school

attendance is synonymous with academic achievement.

It can't be emphasised too strongly that praise and encouragement go a long

way in boosting a child's motivation and confidence in becoming a successful

learner.

In closing, I would like to quote Jonas Salk, "Good parents give their children

roots and wings. Roots to know where home is, wings to fly away and exercise

what's been taught to them".

God bless!
