Working on a show like Cinderella is both frightening and rewarding. Frighten-ing because each of you reading this has your own ideas of what Cinderella should be, simply because you know the story and the films created around it. Rewarding because I get to work with some really great people and together, hopefully give you a new conception of this well-loved story.

I think it is safe to assume that most people have seen the animated 1950 Dis-ney version of Cinderella. Some of us even grew up on that version, completely unaware that there was any other telling of the Cinderella and her life. More re-cently, Disney presented the Rodgers and Hammerstein version of Cinderella, star-ring Brandy and Whitney Houston. The script was even rewritten and updated for that version of the production. Regardless of the version you know and prefer, your experience with the work will shape how you see this production. And as the direc-tor, I cannot ignore that nor should I. In this production, you will see elements that look familiar and elements that feel new—the combination of these will be what sets this production apart. (And hopefully provide you with a new and enjoyable experience!)

On a personal note, the company of Cinderella has been a delight to work with. Their work ethic and willingness to accept the vision set out for this production are commendable. I approached this musical the same way I would a straight pro-duction, not allowing the music and movement to weaken the work the actors are asked to do and the characters they are asked to create. They have met the chal-lenge and put forth the effort necessary for a production like this—which is outside the scope of most musicals anyway. I hope that you get wrapped up in their en-thusiasm and energy…and find your own little corner of contentment and serenity.
