Director’s Note by Cynthia Robinson

Welcome to the 2015-2016 academic year!! It’s always a pleasure to see

so many familiar faces returning for another year. We also want to extend a

warm welcome to the incoming medical, physician assistant and graduate stu-

dents, as well as recently hired faculty and staff.

SciVal and SciVal Funding Acquired by PSU Penn State University, through the Office of the Vice President for Research, has

acquired an institutional license for both the SciVal and SciVal Funding intelli-

gence tools. The purchase of these Elsevier products represents a significant

investment by Penn State.

SciVal will help us assess our institutional research performance from a variety

of perspectives, including comparing our performance against the other Big Ten

institutions. The database is prepopulated with ≥ 7,000,000 researchers from

over 5,500 institutions and 220 countries worldwide. SciVal uses Elsevier’s

Scopus as its data source and mines both Scopus and Science Direct usage

data to convey the impact of the research community. Scopus includes

over 33 million publication records from 21,915 unique journals.

SciVal pre-populates author profiles, which enables users to verify output

and combine them to create groups of researchers under a specific depart-

ment. A user can view Penn State Hershey, Penn State University, or com-

bine them to get a snapshot of the entire university. SciVal is broken down

into four functional areas: 1) Overview, where you can get a high-level over-

view of various research entities, both people and institutions, 2) Bench-

marking, where you can compare against researchers, institutions, other

groups, etc., 3) Collaboration, where you can explore collaboration networks

and identify possible collaborators, and 4) Trends, where you can get infor-

mation on the current scientific trends and identify rising stars.

SciVal Funding is a tool to help researchers identify funding opportunities

targeted to their interests and areas of research. A user can set up a “My

Profile” page which will identify targeted funding opportunities and automa-

tically send emails notifying him/her of the prospect. Funding can be nar-

rowed to specific funding bodies, i.e.: government, corporate, private and

others, or encompass the entire funding landscape. SciVal Funding covers grants from Australia, Canada, the Eu-

ropean Commission, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United

States.

When you connect to SciVal for the first time you will be asked to set up an ID and password. This ID and password

will work for both SciVal and SciVal Funding. You must be on the Penn State Hershey or Penn State University net-

works in order to set up your account. SciVal is authenticated using the institution’s IP ranges. For more infor-

mation about SciVal and SciVal Funding you can contact the Harrell Health Sciences Library at 717-531-8634 or

Robyn Reed, Biomedical Informatics & Emerging Technologies Librarian at 717-531-6137 or [email protected].

Training will be forthcoming, watch for more information.

The library also has an extensive selection of Board review books that you can find in The CAT.

Once in the list in The CAT choose "More Categories" in the "Limit These Results To" box at right to filter by special-

ty:

Some specialty organizations also provide sample board review questions (although most sell these as print or

electronic books) For example, the Emergency Medicine Residents' Association posts questions, while the Ameri-

can Academy of Family Physicians posts information about the products they offer to support board reviews.

Additionally, a simple Google search for "board review" and the specialty you are interested in will result in a list of

products and sites specific to that specialty.

ScholarSphere, Penn State’s institutional repository offered by Penn State

University Libraries, has been going strong for several years now. Several

members of the Penn State Hershey community have successfully used

ScholarSphere to share their work with the world.

Dr. Max Lang, professor emeritus of comparative medicine, recently pub-

lished Founders, an account of founding faculty of the Penn State College of

Medicine based on oral history interviews. Esther Dell, Harrell HSL’s interlibrary loan librarian, assisted

Dr. Lang in finding a solution to providing access to the founding faculty’s CVs, letters of invitation, and

oral history transcripts—important historical documents, but too voluminous for inclusion in the book. The

solution was ScholarSphere, where the entire collection of historical documents now resides.

Dr. Paul Haidet of the Office for Scholarship in Learning and Education Research tweets at @myhero-

istrane about medical education topics. He uploads PDFs of his published articles in ScholarSphere then

tweets out the link to the article (for example,

https://twitter.com/myheroistrane/status/598155567723458561) as an easy and quick way to publi-

cize his work and get peer feedback on his work. Others “retweet” and his work spreads even farther.

The Department of Nursing uses ScholarSphere to store and share their scholarly and quality improve-

ment work in the form of posters and PowerPoint presentations. Nursing faculty and staff submit their

posters to a departmental administrative associate who uploads them to ScholarSphere (although they

could also do this on their own). Now people in the department can include links to their posters in CVs or

share the links with colleagues. View their work here:

https://scholarsphere.psu.edu/collections/r781wk48c

ScholarSphere is free and easy to use…simply upload your document, image, poster, or other file and de-

cide whether you want to share it with Penn State only (requiring Access ID to view) or with the world.

ScholarSphere is indexed by Google so it allows your work to be discoverable by scholars worldwide. Want

to learn more? Email or call the library: [email protected] or 717-531-8634.
