-Birth name: Benjamin Géza Affleck -Born: August 15, 1972 in Berkeley, California, USA

Actor, writer and director Ben Affleck hit the Hollywood radar in 1997 as the co-writer and co-star of "Good Will Hunting," earning an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay along with childhood best friend Matt Damon. In fact, the seemingly overnight ascent to stardom in tandem with Damon became one of the great "Hollywood" stories" of all time - rivaling Lana Turner being discovered at Schwab's Drugstore. Flying past the more understated Damon in terms of initial popularity and box office, the handsome, chiseled Affleck went on to achieve box office gold in uneven blockbusters like "Armageddon" (1998), "Pearl Harbor" (2001) and "Daredevil" (2003), as well as quirky Kevin Smith comedies "Chasing Amy" (1997) and "Dogma" (1999). But it was his extracurricular activities - dating famous actresses and ending up in rehab - that made him a magnet for media attention. His overexposed romance with actress-singer Jennifer Lopez - collectively known as "Bennifer" - and a string of flops threatened to banish Affleck to B-film status until concerted efforts to reclaim his private life and his celebrated directorial debut "Gone Baby Gone" (2007) and his subsequent efforts "The Town" (2010) and the Oscar-winning "Argo" (2012) proved that perhaps Affleck's most underused talent was his ability to write his own happy ending.

In the fall of 2002, Affleck moved to the small screen when he co-produced the ABC mystery series Push, Nevada. The show promised $1 million cash to the viewer who solved its mystery, but was canceled just a few weeks into the season. Affleck also partnered with friend Matt Damon yet again, and founded the production company LivePlanet. The duo produced the documentary series, Project Greenlight, which gave aspiring screenwriters the opportunity to produce their creative visions. The show earned three Emmy nominations for an Outstanding Reality Program.

Affleck returned to feature films later that year, when he appeared as Tom Clancy's young Jack Ryan in The Sum of All Fears. The movie fared well at the box office and cemented Affleck's reputation as an action star. His next film, the comic book action-adventure movie Daredevil (2003), also performed well, setting a box-office record for its Presidents' Day-weekend debut.

““ARGO”ARGO”

Affleck saw one of his biggest cinematic successes in 2012 with the release of Argo, a film about former CIA operative Tony Mendez, who led six American citizens to safety during the Iran hostage crisis in 1979. Affleck directed, co-produced and acted in the film, playing Mendez.

Argo earned Affleck a Golden Globe Award for best director. The film also won a Golden Globe for best picture in the drama category and the 2013 Academy Award for best picture. Argo also garnered Academy Award nominations in six other categories, including best adapted screenplay and best actor in a supporting role (Alan Arkin).

Argo is a 2012 American political thriller film directed by Ben Affleck. This film is adapted from U.S. Central Intelligence Agency operative Tony Mendez's book The Master of Disguise and Joshuah Bearman's 2007 Wired article The Great Escape: How the CIA Used a Fake Sci-Fi Flick to Rescue Americans from Tehran. The latter deals with the "Canadian Caper," in which Tony Mendez led the rescue of six U.S. diplomats from Tehran, Iran, during the 1979-1981 Iran hostage crisis.
