DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT Opportunity : The University of Virginia Alumni Association seeks nominations and applications for a Director of Development. The Director of Development will represent all fundraising priorities across the Alumni Association, with a specific focus on the Jefferson Trust. The Jefferson Trust provides discretionary funding for trustee-selected projects that enhance the University of Virginia as a preeminent global institution of higher learning. It was founded during the 2005-6 academic year to provide grant funding for initiatives that will enhance the student and faculty experiences at and overall reputation of the University. Since inception, the Jefferson Trust has grown to more than $30 million in assets. During the 2017-18 academic year, it gave out more than $700,000 in grant funding, bringing its twelve-year total to over $7 million in grants to fund 179 new initiatives spanning a broad range of schools, departments, student groups, and academic centers at the University. The Director of Development is responsible for assisting with the planning of the development activities of the Alumni Association, including the organization of a Jefferson Trust Capital Campaign and the Jefferson Trust’s participation in the University-wide Third Century campaign. Reporting to the Vice President for Development and Executive Director of the Jefferson Trust, she/he will work with a team of four fundraisers to raise money for the Alumni Association and its key initiatives. Key Priorities: The Director of Development will join the Alumni Association as the University embarks on a $5 Billion campaign. Led by Jennifer Andrasko, President and CEO, the Alumni Association will make a significant contribution to the University’s overall effort. Among the key responsibilities: Assist the Executive Director of the Jefferson Trust in planning the Trust’s participation in UVA’s capital campaign. Organize and coordinate the strategy for all Jefferson Trust development initiatives, an effort that is anticipated to include raising an additional $10 million over the next five years. Assist the Executive Director in the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of major gift prospects. Personally cultivate and solicit major gift prospects, conducting 150+ quality visits with prospects per year. Along with the Executive Director recruit, and provide leadership to, a volunteer capital campaign committee.

Provide leadership and staffing to the volunteer Development and Communications sub-committees of the

Trust; participate in all other sub-committees. Cultivate support for targeted special events introducing the Alumni Association and the Trust to prospects

and donors in key cities and regions; including planning, staffing and attendee follow up. Provide Development and Communications activity update presentations at board meetings and when

requested. Review and provide analysis of activities, costs, operations, and forecast data to measure progress. Complete monthly development reports for University Advancement, the Alumni Association Scorecard and

University Principal Prospects Bulletin. Collaborate with AA Communications on annual marketing plan and public relations efforts for the Trust. Manage the development and production of an annual report, videos and other collateral material. Collaborate with UVA Advancement community to increase Alumni Association and Jefferson Trust visibility

and cultivation and solicitation partnerships with other development officers across Grounds.

Professional Qualifications:The successful candidate will be an experienced fundraising professional with a track record of success closing major gifts. She/he will have experience interacting with alumni, parents, committees and senior leadership. Compelling candidates will be mission-driven with an appreciation for the unique and direct impact that the Jefferson Trust has on the University of Virginia.

Additional competencies for this position include:

At least three to five years of successful fund-raising experience including the solicitation of major gifts. Experience in planned giving preferred.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills required. Exceptional interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact well with donors and colleagues and to motivate

volunteers. Must possess strong public speaking ability. Must be self-directed and rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Familiarity with the University of Virginia preferred. An understanding of higher education and experience in a university setting also preferred. Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and database software required. Proficiency conducting online research to identify statistics, trends, and demographic information required. Proficiency utilizing BSR/Advance is preferred. Ability to travel 40-50% of time required. Bachelor of Arts degree required. Graduate degree or equivalent professional experience preferred.
