M y thoughts this June reflect on observations of our members’ experiences during last month’s CTHOG Family Picnic and the Texas State HOG Rally. Our Officers planned this year’s picnic to be more family inclusive - expressly inviting non-member spouses, parents, grandparents and kids of all ages. We had 120+ folks enjoy the afternoon together. It was heart warming to meet, greet and enjoy the com- pany of those wives who don’t ride but give their husbands a “kitchen pass” to join us for some V-Twin therapy. It was likewise a wonderful thing to see members bring their children, their grandchildren and watch them interact and play games together. Our CTHOG family was enlarged and enriched. We ran a survey, learned some lessons and will refine our family picnic plan next year. Fun family times...that’s how we roll! I’ve been able to observe the past 10 Texas State HOG Rallies. I’ve experienced good & bad - rally sites, organization and attendance. Regardless the state of these factors thru the years, one observation stands out. Our CTHOG Road Captains always ride the “extra mile” to offer an enriched rally experience. This year was no exception! Our RCs offered four chapter ride opportunities to/from the rally. They scouted out 2 routes providing a variety of local and regional riding experiences plus Saturday night’s dinner ride en route to the closing cer- emony. Our RC game plan offered new scenic adventures, some good eating, built camaraderie and left ample free time to experience rally events and local area sights. This year’s CTHOG participation was the largest in our history and we missed having the largest chapter presence in Tyler by 8 members. Sixty-two members signed up and most were undeterred by weather. It was most encouraging to see others arrive by alternate means or rescheduled arrivals/departures to join the CTHOG party at the rally. Fun family times...that’s how we roll! Many thanks to our Officer staff and Road Captains for planning chapter events that remain true to our CTHOG Mission Statement. That my friends...that’s how we roll!!! Well, its summertime and life is good, good and hot that is! It’s always great to see

all the new faces on our rides and at our events and I just want to remind everyone to prepare for the weather before you leave the house.

The next few months will be the hottest yet here in beautiful Central Texas, so make sure you’re ready for it when you’re on your scooter. Remember to hydrate, not only while you’re on the ride but before, days before. That doesn’t mean your favor-ite brewski either! Good ol’ fashioned H2O is what I’m talking about. Even some Gatorade or some other type of sports drink works, just remember they have a lot of sugar as well. Also remember, as hot as it sounds, long sleeves are a great way to keep the direct sunlight off of you and keep you cooler. As I’m sure you know, there are many different varieties of “sleeves” you can get besides a tee shirt that offer not only SPF protec-tion but have a wicking effect that will cool you down as you perspire.

There are also various types of hydra-tion vests available that work very well. By the way, don’t forget the sunscreen for that pretty face of yours too!

While you’re preparing yourself for that awesome, but scorching ride you’re getting ready to partake in, don’t forget about your mount as well. Make sure the fluids and tire pressure are up to specs so you don’t overheat your iron pony.

Most importantly, please remember, if you do get out there and start feel-ing less that ok, by all means speak up! Let one of the road captains know or if you have to, just pull off to the side and we will check on you. Don’t try to tough it out. It’s always better when you control the dismount!

That’s my two cents on trying to keep cool in the summer, but I’m sure you all have your own ways that work for you as well.

Whatever method you choose, pick one, use it, and enjoy the ride….

by Gary ForsytheSAFETY OFFICERSAFETY CORNER

There is nothing more impressive than seeing a group of Harleys in tight for-mation coming down the highway. It causes non-riders and riders alike to take

a double take. Very Impressive to say the least. Other motorcyclists, whether they be one percent-ers, or other riders, do look and judge you by your skills in a group, or lack thereof.

This article is dealing with “tight formation” .While it looks awesome to see a group in tight formation, there is a real danger when we do not keep in that formation. All too often we have a tendency to lose concentration and suddenly find ourselves with a large gap between our motor and the bike in front of us. On a two lane road this gap can have catastrophic consequences. The main danger is an oncoming car, thinking all the motorcycles have passed, the car might then pull out into that gap to pass a slower moving vehicle. You get the idea, and it isn’t pretty.

The other danger in this excessive gap is when you snap back into reality and have to accelerate to close the gap. We normally travel at the posted speed limit or to prevailing conditions. If the Road Captain is running at 60 MPH and you find yourself a couple hundred feet behind, you are go-ing to have to accelerate to over 70 MPH to catch up with the bike in front of you, not the safest

procedure. Along with that fact, you more than likely have bikes in the group that are behind you causing them to have to catch up.

The third point I want to bring up is your Road Captains. This position is difficult to say the least! While each one of us is responsible for our own safety, the RCs are making multiple decisions on each ride. Their main goal is keeping the group-safe by communication from the front of the group to the last rider, the sweep. This communi-cation is called Hand Signals. If you have twenty bikes in a staggered formation and the fifth bike is falling behind, what happens to that communica-tion? It will usually be missed. This missed com-munication is not fair to the group as a whole.

We run two different formations; tight staggered, meaning two seconds behind the bike in front of you and loose staggered, meaning three seconds behind the bike in front of you. Tight staggered is signified by the RC holding up his/her hand with two fingers extended (think hook’em ). Loose staggered is hand up in the air with the index fin-ger extended. Loose stagger allows the use of the entire width of the lane. Please do your part and ride with the proper amount of distance between you and the bike in front of you, this is the safest method.

Saturday, June 6,San Antonio OvernightCTHD 8:30AM L3

Howdy y’all! We are fixin to saddle up on our ponies to head south to San Antonio to sit a spell at the historic O’Brien Hotel just off of the River Walk!! We are gonna mount up at 8:30 AM sharp at the CTHD Corral (Pavillon) and hit some scenic trails as we wind our way to the Alamo City. Gonna stop and pick up some vittles along the way at Luling where they have several eatin’ places to satisfy any grub you are wantin’ to chow down on. After feeding the ponies, we continue down the dusty trail, round a bend or two, and a stop to whet the whis-tle, we will end up in the heart of the city. After checking in and bedding down the steeds for the night, a quick Saturday night bath, a photo op and a group meal at a lo-cal establishment, the streets and river of San Antonio will be yours until we saddle up the next morning.

We will saddle up and ride out with the Ala-mo in our rear view mirror at 8:30 AM Sun-day heading towards the Uptown Blanco

Restaurant on the square for the most ex-cellent grub this side of the Pecos! From there, we will head towards the Peder-nales and Colorado Rivers and a winding trail back to the Cedar Park Chevron at Lakeline/Whitestone about 3:00 PM. Be sure to join your trailmasters - H. Schmid-lapp, ESQ and Houndawg John on this wonderful Texas adventure! This is a rain or shine event....so dust off yer spurs and boots and slick your hair back for some down home fun!! We will make a pretty direct route out to the Hyatt, have a great breakfast buffet and then head back to CTHD for KSD by approx 12 noon. The return route will be a little more scenic and offer some rid-ing through the Colorado River Valley. The Hyatt is located on the south bank of the Colorado River and is a beautiful ride back into just off of Hwy 71. (A footnote so you won’t be surprised at paying the bill-the cost for this full breakfast buffet is $20 per person, but I think you will find that the food, atmosphere and scenery are worth

the money.) So, plan now to add this ride to your itinerary of things to do at the first of the new year. Check out their website at www.lostpines.hyatt.com for their menu and more info. We will be eating at the Fire-wheel café 512-308-4651 inside the main lodge.
