St. Charles Rehabilitation Introduces Schroth Physical Therapy for Treatment of Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a disorder that can affect both children and adults, causing an abnormal curve of the spine. Medical management of scoliosis is complex and determined by the severity of the curvature and skeletal maturity. Conventional options included bracing, observation, and/or surgery to relieve pain. Now, a promising therapy option, the Schroth Method, is available in the United States.

The Schroth Method is a conservative therapy program for the treatment of scoliosis in patients of all ages and in all stages of treatment; pre and post surgery, and when surgery is not indicated. Therapy is tailored to each patient’s specific curves and focuses on stretching, strengthening and breathing techniques that help to counteract the rotation of the spinal curvature. Following detailed guides from the therapist, the patient is then able to maintain the correct posture and practice it in various positions in their daily activities.

For patients, the results can be overwhelmingly positive and include a decrease in pain and a slowing or halting of curve progression,as well as increased cardio-pulmonaryfunction, mobility, improved postural stability and strength.

Laurel Pettit, DPTLaurel is one of a few therapists on Long Island treating patients with the Schroth Method
