Direct to Home (DTH) Technology
DTH technology is a distribution platform for television channels. It enables the subscribers to receive and view TV programmes directly and without any intermediary such as local cable operators. While ensuring more privacy to the viewers, more than 150 programmes/channels can be accessed through this technology. To avail this , viewers have to establish a small dish antenna along with a set top box. And prepaid channel cards are provided to recharge the account.
Benefits
i) It provides access to large number of TV channels as compared to the local cable network.ii) The picture quality through this technology is also better.iii) It is also capable of providing internet connectivityiv) The privacy of viewers remain intact and direct access to adult channels by children can be controlled.
Drawbacks
i) Being highly susceptible to rain, the programmes & the signal receiving during rainy season is affected.ii) Conditional access system is required for its implementation.iii) It also affects the revenue collection by various advertisers.Importance from examination point of view:a) Shot Note- DTHb) Explain DTH technology & discuss its various advantages.c) Topic of current affairs, since it is recently in news.
