What’s a direct object? A direct object receives the action of the verb

directly, like a foot kicking the ball

Ex: John is buying a car > a car is the direct object

The direct object pronoun

When do you use a direct object pronoun? When you don’t want to repeat the name of the direct object.

Ex: I like this car. I am buying it. D.O. D.O.P

Me gusta este coche. La compro. D.O. D.O.P

The Spanish Direct Object Pronouns

Please note! In affirmative sentences, the direct object

pronoun is generally placed before the conjugated verb

Ex: No tienes tu libro porque yo lo tengo.

In negative sentences, the direct object pronoun is placed between no and the conjugated verb.

Ex: ¿Tienes mi libro? No, no lo tengo.

Infinitive construction

Ex: Ir + infinitive

In this case, the direct object pronoun can be placed before the conjugated form or attached to the infinitive.

Ex: ellos van a escribir unas postales.

ellos las van a escribir

or ellos van a escribirlas.

Direct Object Pronouns & present progressive forms

Like with the infinitive construction, the direct object pronoun can be placed before estar in the present progressive construction or it can be attached to the present participle.

Ex: ¿Los estudiantes están leyendo la lección? Sí, la están leyendo.

Or Sí, están leyéndola.

¡Atención! When a direct object pronoun is attached to the present participle, an accent mark is added to maintain the proper stress.

Una cosa más When a direct object noun in Spanish is a

person or a pet, it is preceded by the word a. [there is no English equivalent]

Ex : Don Francisco visita a la Señora Ramos.

Don Francisco visita el hotel Prado.

**In the first sentence, the personal a is required because the direct object is a person. In the second sentence, the personal a is not required because the direct object is a place, not a person.
