Why makes IB unique? Reputation for high quality education sustained for over 45 years.

IB curriculum represents the best from many different countries rather than the exported national system of any one.

Diploma Program assessment is recognized by the world's leading universities.

High standards maintained by actively training and supporting teachers, and by authorizing and evaluating IB World Schools.

It is a complete, comprehensive education programme. We encourage international-mindedness in IB students.

To do this, we believe that students must first develop an understanding of their own cultural and national identity.

All IB students learn a second language and the skills to live and work with others internationally—essential for life in the 21st century.

We encourage a positive attitude to learning Students are encouraged to ask challenging questions, to reflect critically, to

develop research skills, and to learn how to learn. We encourage community service because we believe that there is more to

learning than academic studies alone. Page 9

TOK Essay for Examination 1200-1500 words

Should a knower’s personal point of view be considered an asset in the pursuit of knowledge, or an obstacle to overcome?

“What I tell you three times is true.” (Lewis Carroll) Might this formula – or a more sophisticated version of it – actually determine what we believe to be true?

How can society ethically decide which knowledge should or should not be pursued?

“What distinguishes areas of knowledge from one another is not how ideas are generated, but how they are evaluated.” Do you agree?

What is unique about IB assessment? IB assessment is rigorous, criterion related, consistent and differentiating of student ability.

Assessment is done by exams

that are externally marked all over the world and internal assessments that are marked by the classroom teacher and moderated by the IB

All 4,000 examiners are ‘quality checked’ through a process of moderation.

The IB undertakes random inspections of schools during exams.

The diploma is graded over 45 points giving ample scope to differentiate student ability

Diploma is awarded to students who gain at least 24 points.

Marks awarded for each course range from 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest).

External Assessment Because of the greater degree of objectivity and

reliability provided by the standard examination environment, externally marked examinations form the greatest share of the assessment for most subjects.

The grading system is criterion-based (results are determined by performance against set standards, not by each student’s position in the overall rank order).

Validity, reliability and fairness are the watchwords of the Diploma Programme’s assessment strategy. Page 29

University of California Admissions Officers “The breadth and depth of the IB program, the curriculum,

provides us at the Admissions Office with the kind of information and assurance that students have done the work that we expect of them in the academic area. Not only that, they exhibit the potential of doing very well at our institution. In short, what is in the program of IB, the emphasis on the linkages between the disciplines being studied, for example, the extended essay, all of these things are really excellent indicators to us that the student has done the work that we require, and, also, the student will bring a lot to the institution.” “…there are other things that are intangible…These particular candidates exhibited evidence of determination, tenacity, motivation and all these kinds of qualities that are really, really very valued by all of us as we do our selection for admission.” Page 33

Alumni Testimonials College is all about writing, so is IB. The practice I got in IB writing a

variety of types of papers was undeniably the largest benefit for me. Particularly in terms of English and History, the IB writing style is very applicable to college writing.

The IB Programme very effectively prepared me for a liberal arts education because the learning styles are pretty similar, i.e. focused on writing, in-depth studies of specific topics, close relationships with teachers and other students.

Because of the well-rounded curriculum, talking about art, philosophy, history, or any other topic is easier and more comfortable. Classes like ToK or IB Art provide a background and some confidence to discuss those subjects whether I take another class in that area or not. There's no day to day homework, only large assignments and weekly problem sets. For one class, in a ten week period there are 7 projects that take 5-20 hours each, which amounts to a lot of internal investigations. Coincidentally the reason I'm awake at the moment. Page 39
