    ORIGINS AND DEVELOPMENT OF DIPLOMA IN MANAGEMENT STUDIESTheinceptionoftheDiplomainManagementStudies(DMS)atSIMin1973wasasignificantmilestoneinthehistoryofexecutiveandmanagementdevelopmentinSingapore.ThepedagogicalpurposeoftheDMSwastoprovideexecutiveeducationandtodevelopinsightfulandprogressiveleaderswhowouldmakeadifferencetotheadvancementofmanagementandbusiness,startingfromthecosmopolitancontextofenterpriseinSingapore.

    Priorto1973,nosuchformalDMSmanagementeducationprogrammeswithcertificationandteachingfacultyfromthelocaluniversityandpolytechnicsaswellaswell-knownmanagementpractitionerswereavailabletoexecutivesandmanagersinSingapore.Atthattime,SIMsmainrolewastoconcentrateinprovidingcomplementaryeducationandtrainingfordevelopingprerequisitemanagerialskillsandtalentthatareneededforthesoundexpansionofthenation.TheDMSwasintroducedatanopportunetimetoprovidesuchdevelopmentaleducation.

    TheDMSisabroad-basedmanagementstudiesprogrammethatwasopentoup-and-comingexecutivesandmanagerswhohadtakenimportantresponsibilitiesinawidevarietyofcompanies,includingwell-establishedenterprisesinSingapore.Itprovidedtheseparticipantswithaplatformtoformsocialnetworksand,exchange,cross-fertiliseideasandrecommendorimplementviablepropositionstotransformtheirworkplacesforthebetter.Therewereabout500applicantsinthefirstintakeand70participantswereselectedtojointhefirstDMSclass.

    TheDMSstartedasapart-time,post-experienceeveningprogramme.Thefull-timeequivalentoftheDMSstartedin2002inresponsetonewdemandsofschool-leaversandbuddingexecutivesforfoundationaltertiarylevelstudiesin

    managementeducationagainstthebackdropofSingaporeasan exemplar of economic accomplishment. The programme wasbuiltonthepremisethatthereisnosuchthingasunder-achievingbutonlymaturityandinsightindevelopmentallearning.Andso,itmetamorphosedintoaback-to-basics,Singapore-brand,18-monthfull-timemanagementprogrammeofreputablequalityforbothlocalandinternationalstudents.Today,thefull-timeDMShasenrolledover40intakes.Amongitsstudentenrolment,includesanumberofstudentsfromSingapore,Indonesia,China,VietnamandIndia.

    ThetotalnumberofDMSgraduatesiscurrently15,000atSIMandstillgrowingstrong.

    ThequalityandrigoroftheDMSwasconstantlymonitoredandupdated.Thiswasdonethroughthemodernisationofthecurriculum,andinjectinganewspiritofinnovationandentrepreneurshipinthemodulestaughtsothattheycateredtotheinherentneedsofanincreasinglyknowledge-based,globalsociety.Thequalityinitiativesincludedtheemploymentofright,qualifiedlecturersandcoursecoordinatorswhowouldgotheextramile,developingappropriatemodulespecificationsandcoursematerials,monitoringthequalityofteachingandlearning,tightmoderation and maintenance of assessment/examination standardsandprovidingthenecessaryconditionsforacreativecultureoflearningtoflourish.

    Today,theDMShasbeenrefinedasanexemplaryqualificationinitsownrightthatenjoysarticulationintothedegreeprogrammesofreputableuniversitiessuchastheUniversityofLondon,RMITUniversity,UniversityatBuffalo,UniversityofBirminghamandUniversityofStirling.

  • 4GENERAL PROGRAMME INFORMATIONProgramme ObjectiveTheDiplomainManagementStudies(DMS)isawell-establishedanddynamicprogramme.Itisdesignedtoprovidetheprerequisiteandproductivelearninginvitalmanagementknowledgeandskillsthatareneededinallentrepreneurialorganisations.

    Inthisprogramme,buddinglearnersandexecutiveswillprogresstodevelopafirmgroundingonwhatconstitutesthedynamicsofeffectivemanagementinanenvironmentofreal-worldlivingorganisations,whichintheirstatesofflux,are in competition, in co-existence and/or in collaboration withoneanother.Itisinsuchacontextthatparticipantswoulddevelopafoundationandexplorationintwofieldsofmanagementstudies.Thefirstfieldcoversthebroad-basedstudiesincommunications,economics,statistics,mathematicsandlaw.Thesecondfieldcoversthefunctionalareasofaccountancyandfinance,marketing,peopleandhumanresourcemanagement,informationsystems,andoperations management.

    TheuniquenessoftheDMSprogrammeisthatitprojectsmanagementstudiesasapassionateandexcitingendeavour.Thisprogrammenotonlyhelpsparticipantstodevelopastrongunderstandingofbusinessfundamentals.Morethanever,itsemphasisisalsoonpracticalproblem-solving,people-centerednessandcriticalthinking.Suchskillsandpracticeareessentialtotodaysknowledge-based,transientsocial,technologicalandglobalenvironment.Indoingso,participantsareencouragedtousethetoolsofmanagementstudiesasameansofstudyingandreflectingonorganisationalsuccesswithamoreintensivedisposition.Asaresult,valueisaddedtotheparticipantsjourneyofdiscoveryandlearning.

    Programme StructureThefull-timeDiplomainManagementStudiesprogrammecanbecompletedin1.5years.Thisprogrammeisintensiveanddemandinginitsrequirements.Itisimportanttonotethattheprogrammedesignexpectsstudentstoundertaketheirstudiesonacompletelyfull-timebasis.Studentsareexpectedtoattendlecturesatleastfivetimesaweek.Eachlectureis3hoursduration.LecturesareheldbetweenMondaysandSaturdays.Classesconsistofbothinternationalandlocalstudents.Therearethreesemestersintheprogramme.Eachsemesterissixmonthsduration.Fivemodulesareofferedpersemester.

    Mode of DeliveryThecourseis100%face-to-facelecture.Thecourseworkincludesattendanceoflectures,discussionsofcasestudies,presentations,completionofgroupandindividualwrittenassignments.

    StudentsneedtomakeuseofrelevantwebsitesandtheInternetforresearchpurposesanddoalargepartoftheirstudiesintheirowntime.Besidesattendinglectures,studentsalsoparticipateinprojectlabsessions.

    Assessment and ExaminationStudentswillbeassessedonacontinuousbasisthroughoutthe1.5-yearprogramme.Continuousassessmentscantakeonseveralforms,suchascasestudies,presentations,classdiscussionsandparticipation,individualand/orgroupprojects,quizzes,commontestsandsoon.Theyaredesignedtoensurethatstudentshaveanadequategraspofthesubjectmatter,andtoprovideopportunitiesforselfexpressionandfortheacquisitionofanalytical,creative,andleadershipskills.Inadditiontocontinuousassessments,mostmodulesrequirestudentstoundertakeafinalexam.

    Themannerinwhichthecontinuousassessmentwillbeconductedandtheassessmentschedulescanbefoundintheindividualmodulesyllabusaccessiblebystudentsviathestudentsportal.

    Theend-of-semestermainexaminationisusuallyheldinFebruary/May/August/November.ThesupplementaryexaminationisusuallyheldinMarch/June/September/December.Themannerinwhichtheexaminationwillbeconductedandthescheduleisaccessiblebystudentsviathestudentsportal.

    Attendance Attendanceismonitoredregularly.Studentsmustachieveanattendanceof75%andabovetobeeligiblefortheend-of-semesterexaminations.TheImmigrationandCheckpointsAuthorityofSingapore(ICA)requiresallinternationalstudentsissuedwithavalidstudentspasstoachieveattendanceof90%andaboveinanymonthofthecourse.

    Promotion and GraduationEachmoduleisassessedthroughacombinationofcontinuousassessment and end-of-semester examination. To attain a pass foreachmodule,studentsmustachieveanoverallminimumGPAof1.0(gradeD).

    TograduatewithaDiplomainManagementStudies,studentsmustsuccessfullycompleteandpassall15modules.

    GraduatingstudentswillbeissuedaresulttranscriptandawardedwithadiplomacertificatefromSIMupongraduation.

    Module 7: Financial AccountingThismoduleisdesignedtoprovidestudentswithanunderstandingoftheconceptsandprinciplesofaccounting,theaccountingequationanddouble-entryconcepts.Emphasisisplacedonanalysingbusinesstransactionsandunderstandingfinancialstatementstosupportdecision-making.Studentswillbetaughthowtopreparethebalancesheet,incomestatementandcashflowstatement.

    Module 8: Information Systems for BusinessThismodulefocusesonbusinesscomputing.Buildinguponthebasicknowledgeofcomputing,studentswilllearntoappreciateadvancedconceptslikedatacommunication,networking,Internetandmultimedia.Thismodulealsocoversthesecurityandethicalaspectsofcomputing.Forthehands-oncomponent,studentswilldevelopapersonalhomepagetoexperiencethebasicprocessofdesignanddevelopmentofwebsites.

    Module 10: Managerial AccountingThismoduleisdesignedtohelpstudentstoanalyseandprocessaccountinginformationformanagementdecisions.Studentswillacquiremanagerialaccountingtechniquestoenablethemtoplan,controlandtomakesounddecisions.Coverageinthismoduleincludescostterminologyandbehaviour,relevantcosts,break-evenanalysis,budgetarycontrol,standardcostingandvarianceanalysis,andperformanceevaluationandpricing.

    Module 11: Managing Human ResourcesThismoduleequipsstudentswithbasichumanresourcesmanagementskillsthatareneededbysupervisorsandmanagerstoensurethattheirorganisationsattract,employ,developandretaintheoptimumnumber,typeandqualityofemployeestoachieveorganisationalobjectives.Topicscoveredincludehumanresourceplanning,recruitment,selection,compensationandbenefitsadministration,performanceappraisal,careerdevelopmentandtraining.

    Module 12: Managing People andOrganisationsThismoduleequipsstudentswiththekeyprinciplesofmanagement,organisationalbehaviourtohelpthembecomeeffectiveandefficientmanagersandsupervisors.Topicsincludetheroles,skillsandfunctionsofmanagersandhowtheycaneffectivelydealwitharapidlychangingandhighlycompetitiveenvironmentintheknowledge-basedeconomy.Otherimportantareasincludepersonalandteameffectivenessinaglobalorganisationandinterpersonalskills.

    Module 13: MicroeconomicsThismoduleexaminestheproblemofscarcityandthechoicesofindividualconsumers,firmsandthegovernment.Itconsidersconsumerchoiceanddemandusingutilityandindifferencecurveanalysis.Italsolooksatafirmseconomicobjectiveandhowittriestoattainthisobjectivegivendifferentmarketcharacteristics.Thefirmsproductionfunction,costcurves,pricingandsupplydecisionsarediscussed.

    Module 14: Operations ManagementThismoduledealswiththeuseofoperationsstrategytobuildvaluechainsandcompetitiveadvantage.Itprovidesparticipantswithframeworkstoaddressboththedesignandthemanagementofoperations.Thedesigningframeworkcoversforecasting,thedesignofgoodsandservices,managingquality,processstrategy,capacityplanning,andlocationandlayout.Themanagingoperationsframeworkcoverssupply-chainmanagement,inventorymanagement,materialsrequirementsplanningandERP,projectmanagement,JITandleansystems,andmaintenanceandreliability.

    Module 15: Principles of MarketingThismoduleprovidesanoverviewofacontemporaryapproachtotheconceptsandtechniquesofthemarketingprocessintodaysdynamicenvironment,anditsinter-relationshipwithotherbusinessfunctions.Itexaminesthemanyissues,bothcontrollableanduncontrollable,surroundingtheexecutionofthemarketingfunction.Emphasisisplaceonbuyerbehaviourandtheuseofthemarketingmixtosuccessfullyreachthebuyer.

  • 8Candidature PeriodThe maximum allowed period for a student to complete the 18-month programme is 36 months. The candidature period of 36 months includes repeat semesters or leave of absence within the period of study.

    Admission CriteriaApplicants must be at least 17 years old and meet one of these minimum pre-requisites for direct admission to the Diploma in Management Studies (Full-time) programme.

    as a first language; Otherqualificationswillbeassessedbasedonthe

    equivalencetoGCEOlevelexaminations.
