PCORI (Grudzen) 01/01/2018-12/31/2023 Emergency Department Initiated Palliative Care in Older Adults with Advanced Illness This study will generate comparative effectiveness research evidence to support the delivery of coordinated, community-based palliative care that effectively implements care plans that are consistent with the goals and preferences of older adults with advanced illness and their caregivers. This is a large, multisite study based in nine emergency departments (EDs) across the country to understand which model of palliative care in the community improves patient- and family-centered outcomes. The study will recruit a geographically, racially, and ethnically diverse group of older adults living at home with advanced cancer or end-stage organ failure, and their caregivers, upon visiting the ED. The team will compare two established palliative care models: nurse-led telephonic case management and specialty, outpatient palliative care. Role: Consultant R00NR015903 NIH/NINR (Dionne-Odom) 05/17/2016-05/16/2021 An Upstream Palliative Care Intervention for Rural Family Caregivers The purpose of this study is to develop and test a palliative care health coaching intervention for family caregivers of persons with advanced cancer. During the K99 phase, interviews will be conducted with rural Southern family caregivers; the persons with advanced cancer they care for; and lay healthcare navigators to elicit their perspectives on the potential content, format and delivery of the coaching intervention. During the R00 phase, a pilot randomized controlled trial with 60 advanced cancer family caregiers of rural dwelling and African American patients will be conducted to assess acceptability, feasibility, and potential efficacy of the newly tailored intervention resulting from the K99 phase. cancer prevention and control research. A team science approach is employed based on a variety of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research educational activities. The CPCTP is one of the longest sustained R25 training programs in the country. Additionally, mental health nurses’ perceptions are being collected through individual in-depth interviews and will be compared with the perceptions of adult survivors to identify areas of congruence and discrepancy.
