Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness and to put on the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which your Son Jesus Christ came to us in great humility so that on the last day, when he will come again in his glorious majesty to judge the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal, through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Lighting of Advent Wreath Advent IV (Traditional) V. Rejoice in the Lord always R. And again I say, Rejoice. The lighting of the fourth candle. V. There standeth one among you, R. Whom ye know not. V. Behold the Lamb of God, R. Which taketh away the sin of the world Almighty God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious Majesty, to judge both the quick and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, now and ever. The Advent Wreath The following may be used for the lighting of the Advent Wreath. You may want to light the new candle for that Sunday at the beginning of the service (before after or in the middle of the opening Hymn), during a Children’s time or before the Sermon. There are two forms provided appropri-ate for the BCP and the BAS. These forms allow you to draw out some of the memorable verses of the Scriptures for the day. Some may want to bless the Wreath on the first Sunday. You might use the Christmas Anthems (BCP page 104) and the second Collect for Christmas (BCP page 107) for the lighting of the White/Christ Candle on Christmas Eve or Day. The verses are short and easy enough to be read by children. The Advent Collect is to be used every Sunday in addition to the Collect for the Day and fits well here.

Lighting of Advent Wreath Advent I (Traditional) V. The night is far spent, R. The day is at hand; V. Let us therefore cast off the works of darkness R. And let us put on the armour of light The lighting of the first candle V. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; R. Hosanna in the Highest! STIR up, we beseech thee, O Lord, the wills of thy faithful people; that they, plenteously bringing forth the fruit of good works, may of thee be plenteously rewarded; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (Contemporary) V. The night is far gone, R. The day is at hand; V. Let us then cast off the works of darkness R. And put on the armor of light The lighting of the first candle V. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; R. Hosanna in the Highest! Stir up, O Lord, the wills of your faithful people, that richly bearing the fruit of good works, we may by you be richly rewarded; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Lighting of Advent Wreath Advent II (Traditional) V. Whatsoever things were written aforetime R. Were written for our learning V. That we through patience and comfort of the Scriptures R.
