ActivelyworkingtoshowtheKingdomofGodhereonearth.
Wehaveidentified9572activevolunteers—churchmembersandsomefriends(anyonethespiritmoves!).Mostofthemcallthemselves“membersofEquipasdeVida,”butotherscallthemselves“communityhealthworkers,”“animators,”or“counsellors.”Buttheyallworkvoluntarilytohelptheircommunities.
In2015,theyhave
taughtandmobilizedtheircommunitiesaboutHIV,health,agriculture,andmore
supportedsickandelderlypeopleandvulnerablechildren
tendedgardenstosupporttheirownwork
builtorrehabilitatedhousesforpeopleinneedandchurches
advocatedforthethingstheybelievein
encourageddignity-enhancingchangesthroughtheconstructionofimprovedstovesandlatrines
Mobilisingchangeagents
Thechurchisstrategicallyplacedtoworkforcommunitydevelopment.Ithasanextensivenetworkofpeopleinevenveryremotecommunities.Itisatrustedinstitutionatthecommunitylevel.Thesefactorshelptheworkgowell.
Ourmotivation
Butthesearenottheprimaryreasonswefacilitatecommunitydevelopment.WedosobecausethisiswhoGodcreatedustobe:alive,incommunity,serving.Inlivingoutandworkingtowardswhatisgoodandlife-givingforourneighboursandourselves,wecometolife.

Agricultureandsustainablelivelihoods
1.25savingsandloangroupswereformedandtrained,with435members
2.7560familiesstartedgrowingvitamin-richorange-fleshedsweetpotatoes
3.2307peoplereceivedteachingonimprovedconservationagriculturaltechniques
4.2254farmersarenowtrialingnewtechniquessuchasgreenmanure,carefulspacing,mulchingandimprovedseeds
Thesechangeagentsaresupportedbystaffwhospentacombined9000daysinthefieldthisyear,workingtochampion,buildup,andsupportthevolunteerchangeagents.
Mostofthesecommunityfacilitatorsareknownas“adeptos”—aPortuguesewordthatmeans“supporter”or“fan.”Usingasportsanalogy,itisnotthefanswhowinsthegame,buttheteamitself.Inthesameway,thechangeagentsorEquipasdeVidahaveacriticalroleinwinningthegame.

Communitychangeagentsaresupportedbytheirfans
Theadeptoshaveavocationtothiswork,havingstartedoutasvolunteersintheirowncommunities.
Themostcommonprevailingmodelofleadershipinthisregionofthecountryisthatofabosswhosendsratherthanacolleaguewhoaccompanies.Thismodellingersasaconstanttemptation—butadeptosstrivetofollowJesusasservants,servingthededicatedvolunteerchangeagentsbyhelpingthembuildtheircapacitytomoreeffectiveworktowardstheirvision.
CommunityHealth
1.784prenatalvisitswereconductedbytrainedtraditionalbirthattendants,whoassisted344births;19newtraditionalbirthattendantsweretrained
2.Anetworkof575counselors(oneforevery10households)receivedtrainingin8healththemes
3.Healthfacilitatorscollectivelywalkedapproximately18,000kmonfoottoreachremotecommunities,manyofwhicharenotaccessiblebyroad
4.Communityhealthworkexpandedinto23newcommunities,attherequestoftheProvincialHealthDepartment
5.18activehealthcommitteesfacilitatedcommunity-ledmonitoringofhealthoutcomesandavailablehealthservices

Hygiene,Water,andSanitation
1.210newvolunteerhygieneanimatorsreached42,000householdswithareportedreductioninchilddiarrheaandtwicethenumberofhouseholdswithlatrines.
2.Activitybasedlessonsonhygieneweretaughtin49schools
3.51wellmanagementcommitteeswereformedortrained
4.HygieneworkexpandedintonewareasoftheDiocese,andnowtakesplaceintheDistrictsofLago,Lichinga,Milange,MorrumbalaandMecanhelas.
5.Theconstructionof3rainwaterharvestingtanks,3improvedwatersuppliesand2institutionallatrineswasfacilitated
6.Staffweretrainedintheuseofanewly-purchasedwaterqualitytestingkit

HIV
1.HIVteachingwasintegratedintoallthematicareaswithintheDiocese
2.Mobiletreatmentandlaboratoryserviceswereprovidedto158peoplemonthly
3.TherewascontinuedmanagementofatestinglaboratoryatthehealthcentreinCobue,Lagodistrict
4.5344peoplerepresenting250communitiescelebratedWorldAidsDay
5.Atleast4504peoplewentforHIVtestsasaresultofourfacilitation
6.AteamofpeoplelivingopenlywithHIVsharedtheirstoriesinLúriodistrict
7.ActivistsfacilitatedconversationsaboutHIVin14,692housesrepresenting94,843people.
Nutrition
1.Aseriesofmoduleswasdevelopedandisbeingpilotedin7communitiestargeting21,786households
2.Teachingonenrichedporridge,breastfeedingandweaningfoodwasgivenin18,132households
3.Thefirstnutritionbaselinesurveywasconducted.
4.Thereisincreasedcommunityappreciationoflocalcapacitytonourishtheirchildrenwell.
Disasterpreparationandresponse
SeveralemergencysituationswithintheDiocese—inparticular,floodsandcholera—complicatedotherwork.
Thefloodsandcholeraaffectedevenourstaff,someofwhomlosttheirhomesandfellsick.Despiteallthis,ourplannedworkcontinued.
TheDioceseofNiassabelievesthathandoutssometimesgetinthewayoflongtermdevelopment.However,inthecaseofemergencyscenariositissometimesnecessarytogivedonationstosavelives,andwedothiswiththeutmostcareandcaution.
1.35trainedcommunitycommitteesareactivelyimplementingDisasterRiskReduction.Everyreligioninacommunityisrepresentedonthesecommitteesaswellascommunityleaders.
2.10,154householdsreceivedteachingonthepreventionofcholera
3.2750families,ofwhich1430losttheirhouses,receivedsupportdonations.Thesupportedfamilieshad9518people(including1303orphanedchildren,3150childrenandyouthand680elderlypeople).
4.Thesupportgivenwasof137,500kgofmaize,2700barsofsoap,2700mosquitonets,2700hoes,7200bottlesofchlorine,4500kgofmaizeseeds,54kgofvegetableseeds,3600kgofcassavacuttingsand900kgofpeanutseeds.

Thoughthisworkhasemergedfromthechurchandisanexpressionoflovebypeoplerepresentativeofmanybodieswithinthechurch(clergy,catechists,Mother’sUnion,youth,BernardoMzekiFraternal,andothers),ithasnotbeenintegratedasclearlyaswewouldlike.WerecognizethatJesushadoneunifiedministry,anddidnotseparatehis“spiritual”and“physical”action.
Our2016-2020strategicplanaimstoformallyintegratethe“mission”activitiesofthechurchwiththe“ministry”and“worship”activitiesofthechurch.Ithasidentifiedfourdrivingvalues:
