Dear Friends,

In the summer of 2010 I wrote to you about a project that had turned dreams into reality for street children around the world, the Street Child World Cup. This project was thought up and brought to life in one of our city churches by Revd Chris Rose from the Amos Trust.

Amos Trust has been working for many years with a partner organisation in Durban, South Africa to assist street children in the city and to challenge the brutal way they are often treated. The Street Child World Cup brought teams of street children from around the world to compete in Durban before the 2010 football World Cup.

This imaginative event gained prominent supporters including Archbishop Desmond Tutu and David Beckham. It secured worldwide media attention and has transformed the way street children are treated in Durban and beyond.

In April of last year I had the great pleasure of hosting members of the 2010 Brazil team when they came to London to kick us off on the road to the 2014 Rio de Janeiro Street Child World Cup.

Sixteen teams of street children will come together in Rio to challenge negative perceptions and to highlight the treatment of street children in countries such as Brazil, South Africa, Egypt, Philippines, Ukraine, India and Mozambique.

I am so glad that we are able to make the Amos Trust and the Street Child World Cup the focus of our Diocesan Lent Appeal for 2013.

As we prepare again to rehearse how God so loves the world that he is generous and gives himself to us in the person of Jesus Christ, let us reflect back to others something of that extravagant love of the Father. This is a wonderful opportunity to make a difference for millions of street children who deserve a future free from fear, neglect and abuse.

With thanks for our partnership in the Gospel

The Rt Revd & Rt Hon Richard Chartres KCVO DD FSA

In 2010 eight teams of street children from across the world gathered together in Durban, South Africa for the first Street Child World Cup. This event combined football with an innovative art programme and a street child conference, where the children were able to discuss the change they wanted to see.

As a direct result of the 2010 Street Child World Cup police round-ups of street children in Durban came to an end. In Tanzania police commanders met with street children to find out what life is like on the streets, whilst the team from the Philippines became national front page news raising awareness of the plight of homeless children. A change of government policy in Ukraine now ensures that street children are more likely to be fostered or adopted instead of ending up in brutal children’s homes.

And most significant of all The Durban Declaration, a call to action written by all the children, was presented to the UN, ensuring world leaders heard what they had to say.

In 2014 street children from five continents will take part in the second Street Child World Cup in Rio, Brazil. These children will not only represent their countries, but millions of street children like them as they challenge the way street children are perceived.

This is more than a game.

Lorelyn spent three years on the streets of Manila in the Philippines.

“My family were very poor. It was always a struggle for them to feed my brothers and sisters. When I was 12 my parents separated and it was impossible for my mum to make ends meet. I thought I could make some money to help her, but I couldn’t find food or a place to sleep. I ended up living in a cardboard box. Often I would just survive on scraps of food.”

In 2009, Lorelyn found refuge at a shelter. There she joined the football programme and was part of the team for 2010 Street Child World Cup.

The team were front page news in the Philippines and Lorelyn was asked to join the campaign against child labour. She is now at school and continues to enjoy football. She hopes to help mentor the 2014 team.

“This tournament has helped me to believe in the world again and to know that – I am somebody.”

The Street Child World Cup was set up by UK Christian charity Amos Trust as a global initiative campaigning for street children to receive the protection and opportunities that all children are entitled to.

I am Somebody (Inspired by Revd W. H. Borders)

I am SomebodyI may be poorBut I am Somebody.I may be youngBut I am Somebody.I may be on the streetBut I am Somebody.I must be respected,Protected, never rejected.I am a child,I am Somebody

Father God, you created us all in your image and you see the worth in each and every one of your children.

Grant us the wisdom to see the Somebody in everybody and help us to be somebodies who make a difference.

Amen.
