Diocesan Executive Council Retreat

On the afternoon of Friday, February 5, and the following day, Diocesan Executive

Council members (see names below) met on retreat at the farm of one of our

members.

The hospitality of our hosts, Angela and James Bell, was without a doubt, truly

exceptional! We were warmly greeted and felt at home from the very first moment

we arrived.

The retreat gave us a more comfortable and relaxed atmosphere, with time and space

to chat about various topics that Bishop Michele had raised in his “charge” during the

last annual Synod, in addition to also sharing more personal things with each other,

especially through informal conversations.

As to the formal discussions, so to speak, they focused on three issues:

Administration, Promoción Humana, Education / Training.

We realized that each of our communities/congregations, as well as the diocese itself

need to work on answering two fundamental questions: Why do we exist? And: What

is our purpose? On this basis we can start building our identity in Uruguayan society,

demonstrating through our own individual lives, as well as our institutional life, who

we are and who we follow.

This implies that each community would have to make its own pastoral plan, a

process in which the Bishop is willing to assist. Simply contact him.

It was also decided to give a small workshop/course to members of the various parish

councils, including treasurers, so that everyone can meet the demands and

requirements of their positions properly.

And the Council proposed a meeting of all the parish councils, the parish clergy from

the various communities, along with members of the CED, to share: experiences,

achievements and challenges, and to become better acquainted. A date of May 7th

was set for this gathering, beginning at 15 hours in Lafone Hall.

As for Promoción Humana, the CED decided that two members of the Council will

form a team to represent the CED with Promoción Humana. This team will ask those

who have already taken a leadership role in the past to give us their comments and

suggestions so that we can keep improving this important ministry. We hope to

improve what we have been doing over more than two decades, remaining faithful

both to the Gospel, as well as responding to the demands of the state and our users.

As for Education/Training, it was proposed to develop some guidelines for education

and the preparation of materials.

A small committee was formed to study the needs and possibilities and to present a

plan of action to update the congregation on the principles of Anglicanism. This would

increase our feeling of identity as Anglicans, helping us to answer questions such as:

What does it mean to be an Anglican? Why am I an Anglican?

As a first step this committee has suggested to begin by stimulating the participation

of those members in our congregations who are already exercising some kind of

ministry (e.g. members of the Parish Councils, delegates to the Synod, delegates to

the Province, and members of different committees). This in no way precludes it also

being recommended to all those who, although active for a long time, would like a

refresher and, of course, to any newcomers who approach our Church.

Concretely, in order to achieve this, the suggestion is to produce some simple, basic

and easy to understand booklets using brief stories and illustrations together with

some items to reflect upon and a simple bibliography. Each booklet would cover a

single theme following a proposed itinerary that has been mapped out and which

could include subjects such as: the organization of the Church, the use of symbols

and liturgy, a brief history of the Anglican Church in South America and Uruguay, an

introduction to prayer and the Book of Common Prayer, etc.

The meeting which will take place on May 7th would be used to present this proposal,

so as to give some time for the preparation of the project with the participation of

appropriate persons.

As to the practical part, the way of implementing the use of these booklets would be

addressed at the meeting of the Parish Councils. The members would decide whether

they would like to work on them in workshops, in which case the frequency of these

must be determined, or if some would prefer a blended system using the internet

and specifying the frequency of actual group meetings. In this way, different

contributions and reflections can be shared in groups, as well as questions or doubts

members might have or conclusions which they have reached.

Members of the Diocesan Executive Council.

Lay: Angela Bell, Rolando Dalmas, Ellen Jacoby, Lydia Romero, Isabel Sienra - Valerie

Dee (Secretary, with voice but no vote)

Ordained: Tito Castaño, Susana Lopez, Cynthia Myers Dickin, Michele Pollesel,

Gilberto Porcal, Asdrubal Toledo.

A note from our Bishop In the last issue of The Town Crier a list of our communities here in

Uruguay, was published. We have received some questions about

the name of Fr Alejandro Manzoni, who did not appear in the list.

Towards the end of January, Fr Manzoni asked me for an extended

sabbatical. I granted it to him. Fr Alejandro will have no position,

nor official task within the Anglican Church of Uruguay for an

indefinite period.

WE PRAY & GIVE THANKS FOR

The Anglican Church of Uruguay and our mission to be God´s instrument in the midst of our society; our clergy and their families and the workers at each Project and their families.

For each person who draws near to a Parish / Mission / Project … May we be open to welcome every one of them …

For the sick, the lonely, homeless, those who haven’t sufficient food…

We also pray for those who are unemployed, those going through transitions, and those facing difficult decisions . . .

For those who are sitting for examinations, towards a new job/position…

For those who are on a spiritual search … may we be aware of their needs.
