Center Block

Block Assembly Note: Pay attention to the orientation of the units when assembling the blocks.

1. Sew (1) 3” x 41 ½” Fabric B strip to each side of the 33 ½” x 41 ½” Fabric A panel. Sew (1) 3” x 38 ½” Fabric B strip to the top and to the bottom of the Fabric A panel. Trim the block to measure 36 ½” x 44 ½” to make the Center Block (Fig. 1).

2. Place (1) 4 ½” Fabric C square on the top left corner of (1) 8 ½” Fabric D square, right sides together (Fig. 2). Sew across the diagonal of the smaller square from the upper right corner to the lower left corner (Fig. 2). Flip open the triangle formed and press (Fig. 3). Trim away the excess fabric from behind the triangle ¼” away from the sewn seam.

3. Follow Figure 4 for the seam direction to add a 4 ½” Fabric C square to each of the remaining corners of the 8 ½” Fabric D square to make (1) Unit 1 square (Fig. 5).

4. Repeat Steps 2-3 to make (4) Unit 1 squares total.

5. Sew (1) 2 ½” x 8 ½” Fabric C strip to each side of (1) Unit 1 square. Sew (1) 2 ½” x 12 ½” Fabric C to the top and to the bottom of the Unit 1 square to make (1) Block One square (Fig. 6). Repeat to make (4) Block One squares total.

6. Place (1) 4 ½” Fabric C square on the left side of (1) 4 ½” x 8 ½” Fabric E strip, right sides together (Fig. 7). Sew across the diagonal of the square from the upper right corner to the lower left corner (Fig. 7). Trim away the excess fabric from behind the triangle, leaving a ¼” seam allowance. Flip open the triangle formed and press (Fig. 8).

7. Place another 4 ½” Fabric C square on the right side of the 4 ½” x 8 ½” Fabric E strip, right sides together (Fig. 9). Sew across the diagonal of the square from the upper left corner to the lower right corner (Fig. 9). Trim away the excess fabric from behind the triangle, leaving a ¼” seam allowance. Flip open the triangle formed and press to make (1) Unit 2 strip (Fig. 10).

8. Repeat Steps 6-7 to make (6) Unit 2 strips total.

9. Repeat Steps 6-7 and refer to Figures 11-20 for fabric identifications and placement to make the designated number of units for Unit 3 through Unit 12.

Quilt Top Assembly (Follow the Quilt Layout while assembling the quilt top.)18. Sew the Left, Right, Top and Bottom Pieced Borders to the Center Block.

19. Sew (1) 2” x 68 ½” Fabric B strip to each side of the Center Block. Sew (1) 2” x 63 ½” Fabric B strip to the top and to the bottom of the Center Block.

20. Center (1) 6 ½” x 87” Fabric M strip on (1) side of the Center Block and pin in place. Start sewing the strip a ¼” from the top edge of the block and stop a ¼” from the bottom edge. DO NOT TRIM THE EXCESS. Repeat with the opposite side.

21. Repeat Step 20 to sew (1) 6 ½” x 79” Fabric M strip to the top and to the bottom of the Center Block, making sure to stop and start ¼” away from each end of the block. To miter each corner, fold the Center Block on a diagonal, wrong side together. This should line up the strips from adjacent sides (Fig. 40).

23. Layer and quilt as desired.

24. Sew the (8) 2 ½” x WOF Fabric N strips together, end to end with 45-degree seams, to make the binding. Fold this long strip in half lengthwise with wrong sides together and press.

25. Bind as desired.

22. Starting at the sewn seam (represented by the arrow in Figure 40), draw a 45-degree line to the edge of the fabric. Sew on the drawn line. Trim the excess fabric leaving a ¼” seam. Repeat this step with the remaining corners to make the quilt top.
