As of today we have 166 volunteers signed up and need many, many more. We are also in need of team captains for some projects. If you would like to serve as a team captain, please call 919-389-5482 or email [email protected].
Abide. Love. Go.

Dinner and a Show! - Wednesday May 4th Mark your calendars now for Wednesday, May 4th. We will begin
with a spaghetti dinner 5:45-6:30pm in the CLC. Then at 6:45pm
our children’s choirs will present GPS God’s Plan of Salvation, a
story that guides us down the “Holy Highway” to learn that with
Jesus Christ in our lives, the road of obedience leads to the throne
of God. Donations will be accepted to help offset the costs of the
dinner and musical, with proceeds going to children’s music
ministry. Come out and support these wonderful and talented children…don’t miss it!

Take a Hike From Cancer The Cancer Prevention Challenge Walk, Sunday, June 12th
Did you know that the American Cancer Society Guidelines state that adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderately intense or 75 minutes of vigorously intense
activity each week (or a combination of these), spread throughout the week?
Look for more details in the June newsletter! Contact Scottie Dietz at [email protected] for more information about Cancer Companions.
Three big musical events are happening this summer in the Music Ministries of White Plains UMC. On Sunday, June 12th, at 4:00pm in the CLC, the St. Francis Brass Band will present a concert to raise awareness for Wake Interfaith Hospitality Network (WIHN). The concert is free to all, but they will accept donations to WIHN. The concert should last a little over an hour and will have popular music as well as Broadway, big band, and some classical tunes. It will be a well-rounded program and certainly a nice way to start off the summer.
On Friday, August 12th, members of the White Plains Music Ministry will sing the National Anthem at the Durham Bulls game that night. We have reserved one of the party decks, and the entire church is invited to attend. Please sign up online if you want to attend.
We have commissioned Dr. Michael John Trotta to write our All Saints repertoire for this year. This seven-movement work will be presented in worship on Sunday morning, November 6th. We will have the premier rehearsal for this piece as well as 2016 Christmas music at our Choir Retreat on Saturday, August 13th, at the church. Put this date on the calendar to join us as we start on the world premiere of Dr. Trotta’s All Saints work.
Senior Outing - May 3rd at 1:00pm - Join us for a day trip to Barn Dinner Theater in Greensboro for lunch and the show, Smoke on the Mountain. Let us take you back to a simpler time, 1938, where you become the congregation of Mount Pleasant Church in North Carolina. Pastor Oglethorpe is determined to move his flock into the "modern world" by inviting the Singing Sanders Family to join him. The musical talent is surpassed only by the side-splitting hilarity of these characters. The cost is $41 per person and includes buffet lunch, the show and tax and tip. The shuttle bus will leave at 11:00am. Sign up on online or call Debbie in the church office at 919-467-9394. Shuttle space is limited. Future outings later this year: June 29th, the Billy Graham Exhibit; August 17th, a trip to IMAX Theater; Octo-ber, Southern Supreme.
Library Corner — Did you know that the White Plains Library has an Amazon wish list? And that you are invited to suggest a book for it — or even to buy us one? Check it out: http://amzn.to/1WoJ9nX
If you have read something we ought to have on the shelf but you can’t bear to part with your own copy or if you have marked it up, please let one of the librarians know your recommendation by emailing us at [email protected]. We will add it to the wish list and consider it for purchase when funds become available. If you feel inclined buy us a present, just hit the “Add to Cart” button, as you do for your (grand)kids. And don’t forget to add us to your “Friends list” on Amazon.
The Daytime Book Club meet will meet from 3:00-4:30pm on Tuesday, May 17th in room C205 to discuss True Paradox: How Christianity Makes Sense of Our Complex World, by David Skeel. This will be our last meeting before taking a summer break. Meetings will resume in September and are always on the third Tuesday of the month. For our fall selections, visit wpumc.com/bookclubs.

SUMMER NIGHTS BOOK CLUB SPOTLIGHT ON JUNE 16th—Margot, by Jillian Cantor Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl has been required reading for many students over the years. Anne Frank’s true story has long been a symbol of bravery and hope, as it put a human face on World War II. But most of us have forgotten that there were two sisters hidden in the annex, one a cultural icon made famous by her published diary and the other, nearly forgotten. In the spring of 1959, The Diary of Anne Frank came to the silver screen to great acclaim. In this fictional account, a young woman named Margie Franklin is working in Philadelphia as a secretary at a Jewish law firm when the movie comes out. On the surface Margie lives a quiet life, but she has a secret: a life she once lived, a past and a religion she has denied, and a family and a country she left behind. Margie Franklin is really Margot Frank, Anne Frank’s older sister, and this book imagines what might have happened if Margot did not die in Bergen-Belsen as reported, but instead escaped the Nazis for America. As Anne Frank becomes a global icon, Margie’s carefully constructed American life begins to fall apart. Her past and present begin to collide and Margie is forced to come to terms with Margot, with the people she loved, and with a life swept up into the course of history.

Parent Resources - did you know we publish a blog from Orange just for parents of youth to help you connect to what we're teaching at youth group? Check out this excerpt from our most recent Judgement Call Series. A quick Internet search reveals the worries many parents feel when it comes to their teen’s friends. “How to spot a bully.” “How to spot a bad influence.” “How to spot the wrong crowd.” There is plenty to worry about when it comes to your student’s friends. And while we all want our students to show good judgment when it comes to friends, our tendency as
parents may be to judge too quickly. One friend has too low of a GPA. Another has too many extracurricular activities. One talks too much and another is too quiet. It’s hard to know which qualities our students should accept in their friends and which ones should put that friend on the proverbial no-fly list. But what if, as parents, we spent less time figuring out who our students should be friends with and more time figuring out how to influence the friends they’ve already chosen? What if you were able not only to help your teen choose friends, but to directly influence the life choices those friends make? More and more stud-ies say you can... ABRO Update: Many of you continue to be interested in the young people we brought over from Belarus in the summers of 2003-2008 via the American Belarussian Relief Organization. We are excited to have two of them coming to visit this July. One of the children is Sveta, who was seven the first year she came, right after her mother had passed away. As an eight-year-old she visited again and was able to receive treatment for an illness. Returning too will be Yuliya, who will translate when needed. While they are here, Patti Crane and Judi Brettschneider will be collecting clothing to be sent back to Belarus for two other girls (ages 3 and 6). If you would like to make a contribution to help with expenses, please make checks payable to WPUMC and mark ABRO/PDF.
