D'Souza is affiliated with a number of conservative organizations and publi- cations, including the American Enterprise Institute, the Heritage Foundation, the Hoover Institution, and Policy Review. [2] In 2010–2012, he served as president of The King’s College, a small Christian school in New York City. [3][4][5] Born in Bombay (Mumbai), D'Souza came to the United States as an exchange student, graduating from Dartmouth College. He became a naturalized citizen in 1991. He is the author of several New York Times best-selling books, including on Christian apologetics, such as What’s So Great About Christianity and Life After Death: The Evidence. D'Souza has also been a critic of "New Atheism". [6][7][8] In 2012, D'Souza released 2016: Obama’s America, a documentary film based on his 2010 book The Roots of Obama’s Rage. Both posit that Barack Obama's attitude toward America derives from his fa- ther’s anti-colonialism and from a psychological desire to fulfill his father’s dream of diminishing the power of Western imperial states. The film has been the highest- grossing conservative documentary film produced in the United States. [9] In January 2014, D'Souza was indicted on charges of making illegal political contributions to a 2012 United States Senate campaign. [10] On May 20, 2014, D'Souza pleaded guilty in the U.S. District Court for the South- ern District of New York to a charge of using "straw donors" to make illegal political campaign donations. On September 23, D'Souza was sentenced to eight months in a community confinement center near his home in San Diego, California, five years probation, and a $30,000 fine. [16] He went to the United States as an exchange student in 1978 through a Rotary International program. He attended Patagonia Union High School in Patagonia, Arizona. He attended Dartmouth College, where he graduated with a B.A. in English Phi Beta Kappa in 1983. [1][17][18] At Dartmouth, D'Souza became the editor of a monthly called The Prospect. The paper and its writers ignited much controversy during D'Souza’s editorship by, among other things, criticizing the College’s affirmative action policies. After his time in Dartmouth, D'Souza moved to Washington, D.C., where he served from 1985 to 1987 as an editor of Policy Review, a journal then published by the Heritage Foundation (and since acquired by the Hoover Institution). [1] In his September 1985 article “The Bishops as Pawns”, D'Souza theorized that U.S. Catholic bishops were being manipulated by American liberals in agreeing to oppose the U.S. military buildup and use of power abroad when, D'Souza believed they knew very lit- tle about these subjects to which they were lending their religious credibility, writing: Interviews with these bishops suggest that they know little or nothing about the ideas and proposals to which they are putting their sig- nature and lending their religious authority. The bishops are unfamiliar with existing de- fense and economic programs, unable to iden- tify even in general terms the Soviet military capability, ignorant of roughly how much of the budget currently goes to defense, unclear about how much should be reallocated to so- cial programs, and innocent of the most ba- sic concepts underlying the intelligent layman’s discussion of these questions. 1 Life and career

1.1 Early life and careerD'Souza was born in Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1961.His parents were Catholics from Goa[13] in Western In-dia. His father was an executive for Johnson & John-son, and his mother was a housewife.[14] He went tothe Jesuit school St. Stanislaus High School in whatwas then Bombay.[15] He graduated in 1976 and com-pleted his 11th and 12th at Sydenham College, also inBombay.[16] He went to the United States as an exchange

  • 2 2 POLITICAL ADVISER AND COMMENTATOR

    2 Political adviser and commenta-tor

In August 2010, D'Souza was named president of TheKings College, a Christian liberal arts college thenhoused in the Empire State Building in Manhattan.[22]The college relocated to a larger space in Fall 2012, nextdoor to the New York Stock Exchange in Lower Man-hattans nancial district.[23] On October 18, 2012, afterclaims became public that he had stayed in a hotel witha new girlfriend though not yet divorced from his wife,D'Souza resigned his post at The Kings College.[24][25]

    2.1 Political criticism

Dinesh D'Souza speaking at CPAC 2012.

D'Souza is a noted conservative, and denes conservatismin the American sense as conserving the principles ofthe American Revolution".[26] In Letters to a Young Con-servative, written as an introduction to conservative ideasfor youth, D'Souza argues that it is a blend of classical lib-eralism and ancient virtue, in particular, the belief thatthere are moral standards in the universe and that livingup to them is the best way to have a full and happy life.He also argues against what he calls the modern liberalbelief that human nature is intrinsically good, and thusthat the great conicts in the world...arise out of terriblemisunderstandings that can be corrected through ongoingconversation and through themediation of the United Na-tions".[27]

D'Souza challenges beliefs and projects such asarmative action and social welfare. In the bookIlliberal Education, D'Souza argued that intolerance ofconservative views is common at many universities. Hehas attributed many modern social problems to what hecalls the cultural left. In his 2007 book, The Enemy atHome: The Cultural Left and Its Responsibility for 9/11he wrote that:

The cultural left in this country is respon-sible for causing 9/11 ... the cultural left andits allies in Congress, the media, Hollywood,

the non-prot sector and the universities arethe primary cause of the volcano of anger to-ward America that is erupting from the Islamicworld.[28]

D'Souzas 2003 book, Whats So Great About America, defends the United States against the criticisms of thelast couple of decades. In particular, he argues againstthe criticisms leveled by the Islamic world, domesticmulticulturalists, those seeking slavery reparations, andespecially the left wing in the United States. He con-tends Americans themselves are too critical and take forgranted the blessings bestowed on them by living withinthe borders of the United States.[29]

He also takes this a step further and challenges the no-tion that all world cultures are equal. If one begins withthe multicultural premise that all cultures are equal, thenthe world as it is makes very little sense, he says. Somecultures have completely outperformed others in provid-ing the things that all people seek health, food, housing, security and the amenities of life.[29]

D'Souza has also criticized aspects of feminism in Lettersto a Young Conservative, writing that:

The feminist error was to embrace thevalue of the workplace as greater than thevalue of the home. Feminism has endorsedthe public sphere as inherently more constitu-tive of womens worth than the private sphere.Feminists have established as their criterion ofsuccess and self-worth an equal representationwith men at the top of the career ladder. Theconsequence of this feminist scale of values is aterrible and unjust devaluation of women whowork at home.[30]

In an interview with Enter Stage Right, he said same-sexmarriage did not work because

Marriage does not civilize men. Womendo. This point is even evident in the gay com-munity: it helps to explain why lesbians aregenerally much better than male homosexualsin sustaining long-term relationships. The rea-son that society privileges marriage and givesit a special legal status is because marriage isthe only known incubator for the raising ofchildren.[31]

2.2 Christianity and religionD'Souza attended non-denominational Calvary Chapelfrom 2000 at least until 2010.[32] D'Souza says that hisCatholic background is important to him, but he is alsocomfortable with Protestant Reformation theology; heidenties as a nondenominational Christian.[33] He often

writes and discusses Christian apologetics and has de-bated against prominent atheists and skeptics, includingDan Barker, Christopher Hitchens, Peter Singer, DanielDennett, Michael Shermer, and Bart Ehrman.[34] In aChristian Science Monitor article, he stated, the moralteachings of Jesus provide no support for indeed theystand as a stern rebuke to the historical injustices per-petrated in the name of Christianity.[35] D'Souza oftenspeaks out against atheism, nonbelief, and secularism. He elaborated his views in his 2007 book, Whats soGreat about Christianity. In 2009, he published Life Af-ter Death: The Evidence, which attempts to use scienticand philosophical arguments to support the concept ofthe afterlife. He also relies on theoretical physics to sup-port the concept of God and the ne-tuned Universe, and to refute atheist arguments. The book earned praisefrom atheist Christopher Hitchens for Dineshs argumen-tative skills.[36] In 2012, D'Souza publishedGodforsaken, which addresses questions of how a benevolent God couldallow evil and suering in the world.D'Souza says living creatures are the products of intelli-gent design, but he is not a proponent of the intelligentdesign (ID) movement, as he does not consider ID to bea satisfactory alternative to the theory of evolution bynatural selection.[37] He argues that belief in the afterlifeand in a supreme being are reasonable conclusions giventhe evidence available, and that atheists have misrepre-sented the case for Christianity on many fronts. In a Catholic Education Resource Center article, heshared his belief on the separation of church and state:Groups like the ACLU, with the acquiescence if not col-lusion of the courts, are actively promoting a jurispru-dence of anti-religious discrimination. In a way theSupreme Court has distorted the Constitution to make re-ligious believers of all faiths into second-class citizens.D'Souza argues that current jurisprudence unfairly pro-motes secularism.[38] More clearly, D'Souza states, To-day courts wrongly interpret separation of church andstate tomean that religion has no place in the public arena,or that morality derived from religion should not be per-mitted to shape our laws. Somehow freedom for religiousexpression has become freedom from religious expres-sion. Secularists want to empty the public square of reli-gion and religious-based morality so they can monopolizethe shared space of society with their own views.[39]

D'Souza stated that he has studied radical Islam for sev-eral years[40] and read the Qur'an.[41] D'Souza debatedRobert Spencer about Islam at the 2007 Conservative Po-litical Action Conference and labelled Spencer an Islam-ophobe. D'Souza said Spencer was an eective polemi-cist in his writings on Islam.[42]

D'Souza has also shown his support for the Christian tra-dition of placing articial Christmas trees in homes bypitching[43] the FlipTree articial Christmas tree.

    2.3 Colonialism

In the second chapter ofWhats So Great About America,D'Souza defends colonialism, arguing that the problemwith Africa is not that it was colonized, but rather that itwas not colonized long enough. He supports the Euro-pean colonization of India and other countries, claimingthat Christian colonization was a good thing for India be-cause it was a way for Indians to escape the caste system, superstitions and poverty.[44][45]

    2.4 Abu Ghraib

D'Souza has argued that the Abu Ghraib torture and pris-oner abuse scandal was a result of the sexual immod-esty of liberal America. He further asserted that theconditions of prisoners at Abu Ghraib are compara-ble to the accommodations in midlevel Middle Easternhotels.[46][47]

    2.5 Media appearances

D'Souza has appeared on numerous national televisionnetworks and programs.[48] On November 30, 2007,he debated Tufts University professor Daniel Dennettat Tufts on whether or not God was a man-madeinvention.[49]

Six days after the September 11, 2001 attacks, D'Souzaappeared on Politically Incorrect hosted by Bill Maher. He disputed the assertion that terrorists were cowards bysaying, Look at what they did. You have a whole bunchof guys who were willing to give their life; none of thembacked out. All of them slammed themselves into piecesof concrete. These are warriors. Maher agreed withD'Souzas comments and said, We have been the cow-ards. Lobbing cruise missiles from two thousand milesaway. Mahers comments ultimately led to advertisersending their support and his show being cancelled.[50]

During an interview on The Colbert Report on January 16,2007, while promoting his book, The Enemy At Home:The Cultural Left and Its Responsibility for 9/11, D'Souzamaintained that liberals had some responsibility for theSeptember 11 attacks. He says liberals penchant for in-terference had a decided eect in convincing the Carteradministration to withdraw support from the Shah, whichbrought onMuslim fundamentalists control of the Iraniangovernment. He also said that the distorted representa-tion of American culture on television is one source ofresentment of the United States by Muslims worldwide.D'Souza believes that traditional Muslims are not too dif-ferent from traditional Jews and Christians in America.Towards the end of the interview, he admitted that he andIslamic militants share some of the same negative beliefsabout liberal Americans.[51]

D'Souza has debated several atheists and critics of Chris-

tianity at programs at various universities, including PeterSinger,[52] Bart Ehrman,[53] Christopher Hitchens,[54] andDavid Silverman,[55] on religious and moral issues, in-cluding whether there can be morality without God, howa benevolent God can allow suering, the concept of re-ligion in general, and whether Christianity is good forAmerica, among others.

2.6 AuthorshipIn early 2007, D'Souza published The Enemy at Home:The Cultural Left and its Responsibility for 9/11, in whichhe argues that the American cultural left was in largepart responsible for the Muslim anger that led to theSeptember 11 attacks.[28] He argues that Muslims donot hate America because of its freedom and democ-racy, but because they perceive America to be imposingits moral depravity (support for sexual licentiousness) onthe world.[56] The conclusion of the book, as stated byD'Souza in the introduction, is, "[t]he [George W.] Bushadministration and the conservatives must stop promotingAmerican popular culture because it is producing a blow-back of Muslim rage. With a few exceptions, the rightshould not bother to defend American movies, music, andtelevision. From the point of view of traditional values, they are indefensible. Moreover, why should the rightstand up for the lefts debased values? Why should ourpeople defend their America? Rather, American conser-vatives should join the Muslims and others in condemn-ing the global moral degeneracy that is produced by lib-eral values.[57] The book was criticized in major Amer-ican newspapers and magazines and described as, amongother things, the worst nonction book about terrorismpublished by a major house since 9/11[58] and a nationaldisgrace.[59] D'Souzas book caused a controversy in theconservative movement. His conservative critics widelymocked his thesis that the cultural left was responsiblefor 9/11. In response, D'Souza posted a 6,500-word es-say on National Review Online,[60] and NRO subsequentlypublished a litany of responses from conservative authorswho accused D'Souza of character assassination, elitismand pseudo-intellectualism.[61]

His Christian apologetics books, Whats So Great AboutChristianity and Life After Death: The Evidence, wereboth New York Times Best Sellers.[62][63]

2.7 Opposition to Barack Obama2.7.1 Forbes article and The Roots of Obamas Rage

At the conclusion of a September 2010 opinion articlein Forbes about President Barack Obama, titled HowObama Thinks, D'Souza wrote that the president was

...trapped in his fathers time machine. In-credibly, the U.S. is being ruled according to

the dreams of a Luo tribesman of the 1950s.This philandering, inebriated African socialist, who raged against the world for denying himthe realization of his anticolonial ambitions,is now setting the nations agenda through thereincarnation of his dreams in his son. The sonmakes it happen, but he candidly admits he isonly living out his fathers dream. The invisi-ble father provides the inspiration, and the sondutifully gets the job done. America today isgoverned by a ghost.[64]

Several liberal/progressive leaning groups and commen-taters take issue with D'Souza. Media Matters for Amer-ica, Ryan Chittum in the Columbia Journalism Review, and others, disputed D'Souzas assertions about PresidentBarack Obama.[65][66]

Conservative publications also criticized D'Souzas the-ory. Daniel Larison of The American Conservative states,Dinesh D'Souza has authored what may possibly bethe most ridiculous piece of Obama analysis yet writ-ten...All in all, D'Souzas article reads like a bad conspir-acy theory.[67] Larison also criticizes D'Souzas sugges-tion that Obama is anti-business, noting his lack of evi-dence. Andrew Ferguson of The Weekly Standard writes,D'Souza always sees absence of evidence as evidenceof something or other...There is, indeed, a name for thebeliefs that motivate President Obama, but its not anti-colonialism; its not even socialism. Its liberalism!"[68]The magazine published D'Souzas letter, in which he ex-pressed surprise at the petty, vindictive tone of AndrewFergusons review.[69]

His book, The Roots of Obamas Rage, of which theForbes article was a condensed version, was publishedin September 2010 by Regnery Publishing. The bookpresents his interpretation of President Barack Obamaspast and how it formed his beliefs; it was on The NewYork Times Best Seller list for four weeks in Octo-ber/November 2010.[70] D'Souza appeared onGlenn Beckin September 2010 to discuss some of his theories.[71]

    2.7.2 2016: Obamas America lm

Main articles: 2016: Obamas America and America:Imagine the World Without Her

Next, D'Souza began to work with Gerald R. Molen, co-producer of Schindlers List, on a documentary lm called2016: Obamas America.[72] Through interviews andreenactments, the lm compares the similarities in thelives of D'Souza and President Barack Obama. D'Souzasuggests his theory of how early inuences on Obamaare aecting the decisions he makes as president. Thelms tagline is Love him or hate him, you don't knowhim. The lm has been critiqued on the grounds thatwhat D'Souza claims to be an investigation of Obama in-

  • 5cludes considerable projection and speculation and selec-tive borrowing from Obamas autobiography to prove hisown psychobiography.[73][74] The Obama administrationdescribed the lm as an insidious attempt to dishonestlysmear the president.[75]

After a limited release on July 13, 2012, the releasewas expanded to over 1,000 theaters in late August 2012and reached more than 2,000 theaters before the end ofSeptember 2012. As of October 19, 2012, the lm hadgrossed more than $33.4 million,[76] making it the 4thhighest-grossing documentary of all time[76] and the 2ndhighest-grossing political documentary of all time in theUnited States.[77]

In March 2013, D'Souza announced work on a lm titledAmerica, for release in 2014.[78] He announced the lmat Conservative Political Action Conference 2013.[79] TheAtlantic Wire has called the planned movie a sequel to2016: Obamas America.[80]

    3 Election campaign nance con-viction

In January 2014, D'Souza was indicted by federal pros-ecutors for campaign nance law violations.[81][82][83] Hewas arraigned in a Manhattan federal court on January24.[84] The two charges were for making illegal campaigncontributions and causing false statements to be made tothe Federal Election Commission.[85]

D'Souzas attorney argued that D'Souza did not actwith any corrupt or criminal intent whatsoever and de-scribed the incident as at most...an act of misguidedfriendship.[81][86] His co-producers alleged that the in-dictment was politically motivated retribution for the suc-cess of his 2016 movie.[87] In May, United States DistrictJudge Richard M. Berman rejected that contention, stat-ing, The court concludes the defendant has respectfullysubmitted no evidence he was selectively prosecuted.[88]

In May 2014, D'Souza pleaded guilty to one felony countof making illegal contributions in the names of others.[89]D'Souza told Judge Berman, I knew that causing a cam-paign contribution to be made in the name of another waswrong and something the law forbids. I deeply regret myconduct. During sentencing, D'Souza submitted a let-ter to the court arguing that prosecutors purposefully ne-glected to present an honest comparison of past sentencesfor the same oense[90] and in September 2014, the courtsentenced D'Souza to 5 years probation, 8 months in acommunity connement center, and $30,000 ne, reject-ing the prosecutors recommendations of prison time.[12]He is also required to perform a day (eight hours) ofcommunity service each week during his probation andmust undergo therapy on a weekly basis.[11]

D'Souzas claim of selective prosecution has receivedsupport from some legal scholars and commentators.[91]

Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz said in an inter-view, The idea of charging him with a felony for thisdoesnt sound like a proper exercise of prosecutorial dis-cretion.... I cant help but think that [D'Souzas] politicshave something to do with it.... It smacks of selectiveprosecution. He went on to say such alleged campaignviolations are common in politics.[92]

However, D'Souzas admission of guilt uponwhich hewasconvicted has been cited as enough evidence of the appro-priateness of conviction, with prosecutorial bias consid-ered unlikely given that the sentence did not include anyjail time despite a request for 10-16 months of incarcer-ation by the prosecution.[93] [94] Judge Berman also madeexplicit reference in his sentencing remarks to claims ofpersecution that D'Souza made publicly outside of courtproceedings. According to the New York Times, Whilethe judge said that Mr. DSouza had an absolute rightto express his opinions, he described his claims of politi-cal persecution as nonsense, and scolded the defendant, saying that he continued to deect and minimize the se-riousness of his crime.[12]

    4 Personal life

In 1992, D'Souza married Dixie Brubaker, whom he rstmet when he worked in Washington, D.C. They have onedaughter, born in 1995. [1] In his book Life After Death:The Evidence, D'Souza stated that Dixie had a near-deathexperience at the age of 19.[95] The couple lived togetherin California until D'Souza moved to New York as pres-ident of Kings College.[96] He maintained a residencenear San Diego where his wife and daughter remained.[97]

In an October 16, 2012 article inWorld Magazine, authorWarren Cole Smith reported on D'Souzas activities aftera September 28 talk that year in Spartanburg, South Car-olina.[96] Smith said that D'Souza, who was married at thetime, checked into a hotel with another woman, and leftwith her the following day. In his rebuttal, D'Souza saidthat he and his wife had separated. He conrmed that hehad been engaged to Denise Odie Joseph, noted in the ar-ticle. After an investigation by ocials at Kings College,he suspended the engagement to Joseph.[4] D'Souza o-cially led for divorce from Dixie Brubaker on October4, 2012.[98][99]

After D'Souzas engagement became public, the trusteesof The Kings College announced after meeting on Octo-ber 17, 2012, that D'Souza had resigned his position aspresident of the university in order to attend to his per-sonal and family needs.[100]
