Thoughts from the SuperintendentWelcome back to a new school yearWelcome back to the start of yet another great school year at Holley CSD. We have been working very hard to prepare the schools for the first day of classes on September 5. The current capital project has added some new spaces, such as the MS/HS student/staff dining hall and the multi-purpose room adjacent to the gym. We have also renovated many classrooms at both schools, as well as the intermediate gym at the Elementary School. The new football stadium and all-weather track, and the new transportation facility are on schedule for completion. A new traffic pattern has been developed in front of the MS/HS that separates bus traffic from other vehicular traffic, which you can read more about in the MS/HS update. We will have staff stationed in the lot on the first day of school to assist you. Ms. Karri Schiavone is the new Elementary School principal. Many of you know her and for those who do not, please dont hesitate to introduce yourself to her. Mr. Ashley Grillo, who served as a teacher on special assignment at the MS/HS last year, has been named elementary assistant principal. Mr. Dan Courtney has been appointed assistant principal/athletic director at the MS/HS. Dan began his

duties on August 1. Most recently, he taught seventh and eighth grade math, and coached cross country and track at Oakfield Alabama CSD. And Mr. Tim Dunham is the new director of Special Programs and Alternative High School administrator effective August 31. He was most recently employed in the Medina CSD as the interim CSE chair. Our annual Back to School Night will be held on Tuesday, September 4 and the principals will have additional information for you regarding the activities for this event. If you are just joining the Holley CSD family, we welcome you knowing that you will love the schools and the caring, learning atmosphere that fills every classroom and hallway. If you are returning, we cant wait to welcome you back. I hope that you will have a very enjoyable year and welcome to the 2012-13 school year!

    Sincerely,

    Robert C. DAngeloSuperintendent of Schools

He earned a bachelors degree in elementary education from SUNY Cortland and holds a

masters degree in educational leadership from Niagara University. Courtney and his wife Katie live in Ogden with their two children (Sean, 3, and Bridget, 2) and are expecting their third child this winter. In his free time, he enjoys running.

Vacation plannerThe Holley School District recognizes the importance of vacations to families and thus provides several recesses throughout the school year. When students are absent from school due to extended family vacations, important instructional time is lost and may be difficult to make up. Therefore, the Holley School District discourages vacations that would cause children to be absent from school. Take time to plan vacations with your childs academic development in mind. Middle School/ High School updateby Principal Susan R. Cory

It is hard to believe that the summer is over and we are ready for another school year. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone back to a new and exciting year. I am also pleased to welcome Daniel Courtney to the building as the new assistant principal/athletic director. Please be sure to stop in and welcome him to Holley. With Phase 2 of the Capital Project winding down as we get ready to return to the MS/HS, students and community members can expect a lot of changes. The building project is 50 percent complete with the entire project scheduled to be completed in September 2013. There are significant changes to the parking area, student drop off area and bus loop. There is a map of the new parking configuration on the districts website. Please look it over and familiarize yourself with the new drop off points. The changes were designed with student and community safety in mind. Students being dropped off should never have to cross traffic. The bus loop is only for buses and the bus loop should never be used as a drop off point. The inside of the building has a very different look as well. The main office has been moved to temporary space for the 2012-13 school year. The office, counseling suite, and library are scheduled for complete renovation in the summer of 2013.

The cafeteria has been moved to the other side of the building. This new dining hall is gorgeous and will be a pleasant place for lunch and other activities throughout the year. The seating area of the dining hall will be open on the first day of school; however the kitchen will not be fully operational until October. Students will be provided lunch, however some of the selections may need to be limited until the kitchen is fully operational. The building will be in a state of transition throughout the school year. The building will be safe and clean, but it may not be beautiful. Students will be safe and secure, and have a great learning environment. We will all need to be flexible when it comes to space, but the end result will be worth it. The Code of Conduct and the Attendance Policy have been revised and updated, and can be viewed on the district website. Attendance and punctuality to school will be stressed from the very first day. Please make sure that your students are in school each day and arrive with time to get to their first period class. Students who are late to school without a legitimate note will be required to stay for an after school detention that day or the next day. Students attendance in school directly impacts student achievement.Respect, responsibility and safety will be a common theme for this school year throughout the district. It is my

expectation that our entire school community respect themselves and others, be responsible and accept the responsibility that is given to them, and for us all to be safe. In our ever changing world people who possess and understand those qualities will be ready to take on the daily challenges while being productive citizens in their community. The first day of school for students is Wednesday, Sept. 5. The first class of the day begins at 7:30 a.m. and period 9 ends at 2:21 p.m. following the afternoon announcements. On the first day of school students will attend every class. Students also will be presented information on the changes to the Code of Conduct and Attendance Policy, the Dignity for All Students Act, and receive information about upcoming class activities, especially Homecoming. Regular communication between home and school is always encouraged. It is important for parents to have open communication with all members of the school community. Please do not hesitate to contact teachers, staff and administrators with questions, comments or suggestions, and use the district website to get the most updated information on the school and programs available. It is my hope that all students, parents and community members take pride in our entire school program. Best wishes for a productive and enjoyable school year.

Elementary School updateby Principal Karri Schiavone

Middle School/ High School updateby Principal Susan R. Cory

Welcome back to a new school year! I hope everyone was able to relax and enjoy the summer break. I am thrilled to be able to announce that Mr. Ashley John Grillo has joined the Elementary School family as assistant principal. He and I are very excited to start the school year and to have the opportunity to work with the students, parents and staff. This has been a summer of great change and positive outcomes. As you can see when you pass by or stop into one of our schools, the campus has been under major renovation. The renovations to the Elementary School are nearly finished. Classrooms, hallways, lavatories, gymnasiums, and hidden systems like electrical, ventilation and roofing have all been renovated. The result is a cleaner, safer and more efficient building.

Teachers have worked diligently over the summer to rewrite curriculum, and raise the standards and learning expectations for all of our students. The new curriculum will be implemented this year in English Language Arts and math classes at every grade level. Students will be expected to read, think critically, problem solve and write a great deal more. Parents will be essential in this initiative as we increase the rigor of instruction and increase student skill mastery. There will be opportunities throughout the school year for parents to participate in and support student learning. The very first opportunity will be to help prepare your child for a positive start to the school year by sharing your learning and behavioral expectations with them. At school, Respect, Responsibility and Safety are the words the students will hear throughout the year.

Here are a few events to add to your family calendar as you prepare your child to return to school on Sept. 5:

Tuesday, Sept. 4, 5:30-7 p.m. Back-to-School Night Come and visit your new teacher and classroom!

Wednesday, Sept. 5 Kindergarten Orientation AM Session: 9-11 a.m., PM Session: 1-3 p.m.

    Wednesday, Sept. 5 Pre-K Orientation (Held in your childs classroom)AM Session: 10-11:30 a.m., PM Session: 12:30-2 p.m.

Thursday, Sept. 6 First day of school for Pre-K and kindergarten students

reminder:If your child will need bus transportation and you have not submitted a transportation request form, please do ASAP. The form can be obtained in any of the school offices or at www.holleycsd.org/transportationThe following important documents can be found at http://www.holleycsd.org/documents.cfm: Code of Conduct, Attendance Policy, District Calendar, Free and Reduced Meal Application, Parent Handbook, and SchoolTool Parent Access Letter.I look forward to Back-to-School Night and the first day of school!

Cell phone use not allowed during regular school day

This year, Holley CSD has a new cell phone policy in effect. There is no use of cell phones during the regular school day in any manner. An exception may be made for student cell phone use with permission from an administrator. If the cell phone is found to be in use, it will be confiscated and may be searched. Consequences are as follows: First Offense: The cell phone will be confiscated and a verbal warning will be given to the student, with a notation made in the students file. The student will be permitted to retrieve the phone from school administration at the end of the school day. Second Offense: The cell phone will be confiscated and a written warning will be issued to the student. (A copy of which will be kept in the office.) The students parent or guardian will be contacted in order to retrieve the phone. Third Offense: The cell phone will be confiscated, the students parent or guardian will be required to retrieve the phone from school administration, and the student will be given a minimum of five after-school detentions in ISS. Fourth Offence: The cell phone will be confiscated, the students parent or guardian will be required to retrieve the device from school administration, and the student will be given a three-day in-school suspension. Fifth Offense: The electronic device will be confiscated, the students parent or guardian will be required to retrieve the device from administration, and the student will be given a five-day in-school suspension. The student will forfeit the right to bring a cell phone or other electronic device to school. In instances where the students conduct is egregious or the student has engaged in misconduct in addition to his/her violation of the cell phone policy, the district reserves the right to initiate student discipline at any of the levels above. Not giving a phone to a staff member who requests it will result in the student spending the next nine periods in ISS NO CELL PHONES ARE ALLOWED IN THE LOCKER ROOMS FOR ANY REASON. Sexting is an unacceptable (and possibly illegal) use of technology. Parents and law enforcement will be contacted as warranted. Consequences may be given for a disruption to the educational process.

The Dignity for All Students Act, Common Core Standards and the Annual Professional Performance Review school districts across the state are working on implementing these standards and policies for the 2012-13 school year. Take a minute to become more familiar with changes affecting students school environment and methods of learning, along with how educators are evaluated.

dignity for All Students Act (dASA) The Dignity for All Students Act was signed into law by

Governor Patterson on Sept. 8, 2010 and became effective as of July 1, 2012.

According to the law, the legislature finds that students ability to learn and to meet high academic standards, and a schools ability to educate its students, are compromised by incidents of discrimination or harassment including bullying, taunting or intimidation.

The law is intended to protect students from discrimination or harassment through conduct, verbal threats, intimidation or abuse based on a persons actual or perceived race, color, weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, religious practice, disability, sexual orientation, gender or sex.

The Dignity Act applies to behavior on school property (including athletic fields, playgrounds and parking lots), in school buildings, on a school bus/vehicle, as well as at school-sponsored events or activities.

The law also includes protection of people who report discrimination or harassment.

To comply with the Dignity Act, at least one staff member in each school must be designated as the Dignity Act Coordinator (DAC).

o The Holley DAC is Susan Cory at the MS/HS and Karri Schiavone at the Elementary School.

Resource: New York State Department of Education website, The Dignity for All Students Act, http://www.p12.nysed.gov/dignityact/

Annual Professional Performance review (APPr) According to NYSED, the purpose of the evaluation system

is to ensure that there is an effective teacher in every classroom and an effective leader in every school. The evaluation system will also foster a culture of continuous professional growth for educators to grow and improve their instructional practices.

Beginning in the 2012-13 school year, the evaluation system includes all classroom teachers and building principals.

The APPR can be broken down into three parts: growth, locally-selected measures and other measures.

o Growth will be measured with state-provided numbers and student learning objectives (SLOs).

    - Student growth percentile showcases the change in performance compared to students with similar starting points. The definition of similar students is not just test based student characteristics, such as poverty and disability indicators, gender and student age, among others, are also taken into consideration.

o Locally-selected measures are measures defined by the number of students in the cohort who pass all the required exams and earn at least 22 HS credits within four years.

o Other measures include, but are not limited to, rubrics, observations, visits and surveys.

    - For teachers, at least two classroom observations must be done each year by either a principal or another trained administrator.

Resources: EngageNY.org, New York State Department of Education

Common Core Standards According to EngageNY.org, the Common Core Standards

Initiative is defined as a state-led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO).

The intent of the standards is to prepare students for college and the workforce through an enriched and challenging K-12 education.

The standards:o are aligned with college and work expectations;o are clear, understandable and consistent;o include rigorous content and application of knowledge

through high-order skills;o build upon strengths and lessons of current state

standards;o are informed by other top performing countries, so that all

students are prepared to succeed in our global economy and society; and

o are evidence-based.o There are 12 shifts of common core, six in mathematics

and six in English language arts/literacy. These shifts help districts align with Common Cores expectations and goals.

o The ELA/literacy shifts are meant to:- encourage students to read more non-fiction, - learn about the world by reading, - read more challenging material thoroughly, - discuss reading using evidence, - write using evidence and - increase academic vocabulary.

o In mathematics, the shifts are meant to:- learn more about fewer key topics, - build skills within and across grades, - develop speed and accuracy, - have a deep understanding of the mathematics

concepts, - apply concepts to the real world and - intensely practice and understand mathematics.

SchoolTool, Connect-Ed and Facebook keep parents in the loopMost parents have already registered for SchoolTool (the districts student management system) and can view their childs daily attendance and discipline information. Parents of students in grades 6-12 can also view their childs schedule, attendance, and interim and report card grades. Parents who have not yet registered are encouraged to do so by visiting www.holleycsd.org/SchoolTool where they will find a downloadable sign-up form and instructions. The sign-up form may be returned to either schools main office. Parents only need to register once to have access to this secure system.

Parents also need to be sure their childs school has current telephone numbers and/or email addresses, so that they do not miss out on important communications through Connect-Ed, the districts messaging service. This service enables the district to personally communicate with parents about emergency situations, school events, and important issues impacting Holley students. Parents can update their phone numbers and email addresses by calling the main office of their childs school.

Another way parents can stay in the know is by liking the Holley Central School District Facebook page and following Holley CSD on Twitter. Reminders and links to stories found on the website are posted there regularly.
