And it is a SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN fact..Now I will give yousome reasons why learning English is good..1. You will be more employable.2. You will be able to work anywhere across the globe.3. You will be considered an intellectual (and an educated) fellow.4. It is easier to milk the internet resources if you are acquainted with English5. Almost everything worth reading/listening/watching is in English or translated in it, and it can be experienced only if you know English.6. You can access or be accessed by most of people if you know English.....How to learn English?~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Ask anyone. I want to improve my communication skills (or Learn English) and the people (even those who do not know anything) will bombard you with suggestions like these..1. Read English newspapers (magazines)..2. Read English literature (or Novels)..3. Watch English movies..4. Listen to English songs..5. Master grammar (Solve one exercise daily from Wren & Martin)..6. Join some English classes..7. Learn one word daily from the Oxford Dictionary..I am anincorrigible believerof the fact that communication skills (or Learning English) cannot be acquired by doing any one or all the above mentioned activities. Let me give you the reasons for my belief...1. The importance of reading newspapers..This suggestion is given by almost everyone. My only question to anyone who suggests this is, WHAT have you learnt by this method? In fact nothing is as detrimental to learning English as reading newspapers..Most of the newspaper/magazines use very difficult words to show elitism. They avoid using common words..They purposely construct complicated and complex sentence structures. Their sentences are extremely long and confusing. .They use some very unfamiliar idioms and phrases. Readers have to read and re-read several sentences several times to decipher the meaning. Even the most dedicated English teacher will not make any effort to decode the morning newspaper..They situate words of Barrons Vocabulary List in the sentences. They write to IMPRESS and not to INFORM..I am reading The Hindu newspaper from the past 20 years, and it is terrorizing me with its English since then. And with constant use of such English it is depleting its readers base. It never uses the English language in the way, it should be used. That is for everyday give and take..Forget it pick any English newspaper, read its editorial, and you will see a lot of ancient sentence structures filled will excessive abstract nouns, adverbs and adjectives. Every word carefully chosen and written to confuse the readers. .People do not want this, they are busy. They want everything to be simple..Do not blame them!!!.It is not their fault. Every editor has to give one article everyday. And because they have to write everyday, they have to write on those topics also about which they do not know anything. So they take help from google. But being an editor they cannot simply Cut-Copy-Paste it. Therefore they replace the actual words with their synonyms and put several words to hide their ignorance. (which is what I am doing right nowJ).If it comes to plain simple English, Central Chronicle and the TIMES OF INDIA are bests..You might be thinking if The Hindu is that bad, why at all, I read it?.All the Reading Comprehension passages for all the Competitive Exams held in India appear from it. Thats why?..2. The importance of reading English literature (or novels)..This is the second most popular suggestion. .My question is, HOW can you learn current usage of English by reading the English which was prevalent 400 years ago? How by studying Shakespeare can you learn English?.There is something about English authors and Indian authors which you need to understand..Indian AuthorsEnglish Authors

Try to impress by using heavy words.Try to use everyday expressions.

Write primarily in PASSIVE VOICE.Write primarily in ACTIVE VOICE.

Still use the English which was used during the British RaajUse conversational form.

Deliberately construct complex sentences.Automatically construct simple sentences, which are easier to understand.

Useless for learning English.Very useful for learning English.

..3. The importance of watching English movies..1. Because it is interesting (most of the times you want to know what is being said) it is easier to grasp.2. You get to know what sort of English is spoken by the native speaker in day-to-day conversations.3. You get to know the daily expressions (Idioms and Phrases) thus you become more confident and fluent.4. However, initially (and at times) you would not be able to understand what is being said, and you have to try hard, but it trains your ears best.5. Initially, it is a good idea to watch movies with English subtitles...4. Listen to English songs..It is a bad idea. And it has nothing to do with learning English...5. Master GRAMMAR (Solve one exercise daily from Wren & Martin)..All of us know at least one language. Now, understand that the faculty to converse requires a great deal knowledge of the grammar of the language..As a native speaker you can form the most complicated structures of sentences without even MASTERING the grammar of your mother tongue..Which Grammar book?.It is simply like doing mechanical engineering to learn riding a bike..Language is skill, and a skill is acquired by DOING. And you must understand that usage comes first and usage rules. Before that understand what is Grammar? Grammar is the whole system and structure of a language in general. That is to say that if enough people start making a mistake, the mistake will be accepted as an exception to the rule..Therefore, avoid those teachers who are purists the teachers who insist on CORRECT GRAMMAR..So. Should I give up learning anything related to grammar in any sense?.No. Learn IDIOMS and PHRASES...6. Join some English classes..Before you even think of it, let us do some general calculation..Almost all English classes have 20 to 200 students. With 20 students in a class and 90 minutes of total time, you will get...90 minutes 20 students = 4 minutes 30 seconds per day..But usually, a teacher has to spend 15 minutes in introducing the topic and 15 minutes to correct the mistakes and explain it..60 minutes 20 students = 3 minutes per day..Therefore, you will get to use English for 3 minutes per day..And at what cost?.The fee ranges from 300/- per month to 5000/- per month..Usually all English classes are closed on Saturdays and Sundays, and thus in a week, you will get.15 minutes per week, that is just1 hour per month.Ridiculous!!!.Also think about trainers attention..100% attention 20 students = 5% of the total attention. Right???.Wait I have still more venom to vomit..Have you thought oftravel expenses? To be on the safer side let us assume it to be500/- per month..There are some magicians also who claim to Teach PHILUENT English in 70 / 80 / 90 hours..Ask them that you want to talk to 4 or 5 students whom they have taught..Ask them, who will learn English in 70 / 80 / 90 hours? English medium students or Hindi medium students?.They say they give individual attention. When the very course is not designed specifically for individuals, how can they give individualized attention to an individual who is sitting in a class of 20 to 200 individuals?.Now, understand that in order to have fluency and speaking influentially you need to practice speaking under an experts supervision, but even after spending 90 minutes in class and 30 minutes (at least) in travel (2 hours in total) you are getting a practice of how many hours?.3 minutes per day..How wonderful!!!.You might say that we also learn by hearing. But usually all the students in a batch have more or less the same level. Therefore there is not much benefit..And on top of that you cannot go to class everyday!!!.If you want to learn from a teacher, hire a private tutor. Though it is expensive but it is worth the money. Ask him to teach you 2 hours a day. This will give you the desirable practice of speaking...7. Learn one word daily from the Oxford Dictionary..Some English teachers suggest students to learn at least 10 words daily from the dictionary. Some also suggest to construct sentences on those words. They also suggest carrying flash cards with just one word written on it, and carry it everywhere. Do you think you will write 10 (or 20) words everyday and carry those flash cards all the time?.I do not think it suits me. Moreover, my acquaintances/friends/colleagues will LAUGH at me..I prefer people to think that I do not know anything about English. And then all of a sudden (after a secret practice of 5 or 6 months) they should see me speaking FLAWLESS, INFLUENTIAL and FLUENT English. I want to astonish all of them with my command over the language..It should seem effortless. People should not see how much effort I have put, they should see me as a very intelligent person for whom learning everything is easy..Secondly, it is very difficult to remember words which are not related. And it is very easy to learn words by association. That is to say if you learn words which are related to a particular topic like marriage, family, disaster, school, you can learn and remember the words far more easily..Most of the teachers do not know that the words to be taught are selected based on their frequency of use, the teachability and their penetration among masses. As an English teacher, I never teach words which most of the people cannot understand. I prefer teaching those words which most of the people are familiar with. Whatever you study / watch / listen write a brief summary of it.Actively using your brain everyday will enhance your vocabulary dramatically..5. Learn Etymology. It is a magical way of filling your brain with hundreds of words EVERYDAY..6. Checkthefreedictionary.comeveryday. Whenever you come across a word you do not know, look it up onthefreedictionary.com only..7. When you learn a word, start finding situations to use it. Start using it immediately and frequently. It will commit the word to your memory..8. Never go for English classes. Big classes give you the liberty to sit back and be lazy. That is theultimate aim of educationis to make the learners capable of doing things on their own. To inculcate the ability to deal with the unpredictable daily challenges which they might face. And therefore students should be trained to learn on their own. That is what education is all about. But nearly every school teacher has studied merely from cheap guides and has neither imbibed nor reflected over the teaching concepts which he is supposed to know. And thus they enter the most important profession of the world with useless degrees without knowing the basics. ~ puneet biseria~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Some teachers consider the not-very-bright students as intellectually inferior, but even with the most essential B.Ed. degree they are not aware of their negative attitudes, and they treat the students with same disinterest with which they were treated. ~ puneet biseria~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Nobel Laureate Roger Sperry stated that our educational system tends to neglect the non-verbal form of intellect. What it amounts to is that modern society discriminates against the right hemisphere!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~We, in india, do not pay any heed to the Right Hemispherical literacy. The dyslexic children are considered as learning disabled. If you have seen Taarey Zameen Par you can have a clear understand that the kids who can draw much better than the so called normal children, are not considered competent. You have to go to a very expensive school, if you want your child to be well versed with academics, art, and music. Most of the schools do not have art or music departments. In fact, art and music is not even considered a department in most of the schools. Just by including these things also in our education system, we can make the curriculum as vivid as as possible. ~ puneet biseria~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~The teacher should try to develop the ability of the students to use the language for a variety of communicative purposes. It should not be limitized only to answer the questions in examinations. ~ puneet biseria~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~And now, when I am an English teacher, I avoid being an a**hole. I give my students frequent opportunities to speak. I let them speak freely, allowing them to make as many mistakes as possible. First of all, I let them be comfortable with speaking English words. I never use the word grammar, I tell them every rule by saying we usually use this sentence like this. ~ puneet biseria~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~What helped me most in learning English was attempting the English section of competitive exams like IBPS, SSC, Railway, et cetra and study the explanation of the correct answers. It improved my English tremendously. I was exercising my brain everyday to get the correct answer. Solving the reading comprehension exercises exposed me to the widest variety of the texts. It was only because of my reading the standardized and correct English everyday for 30 minutes I acquired a good command over the language. It fixed the correct grammatical forms in my mind. I developed an aptitude for the language. These question papers have a lot of exercises related to synonyms antonyms It helped me a lot to remember the meanings of the difficult words and also the various shades of their meanings. Attempt at least one English section of any competitive exam and check the answer everyday and within an year, your English will be improved incredibly. ~ puneet biseria~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~All the English teachers feel that it is their duty to 'correct' the learners' English, to minimize their errors. But it is not like that, in fact errors are something to be be happy about. It tells us that the learner is in the process of learning, and is slowly and steadily climbing the ladder towards L2. Errors are seen as problems that had to be eradicated immediately. But just correct the student 3 or 4 times and the student either start considering you as an a**hole, or he will abandon all the hopes of learning English. ~ puneet biseria~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~It is necessary that an English teacher should exercise a good command over the English language. But is that enough? No not at all!!!! If it were the case, than the people of USA and UK were employed as English teachers everywhere saving themselves to face the biggest EMPLOYMENT CRISIS. It clarifies that just the working knowledge of the language is not sufficient, what is required is that the teacher must have explicit knowledge about the language. He must have the capability to understand how the language is acquired by the human brain. He must be well-versed with all the teaching principles and, more importantly, how to implement them. Most of the English teachers are employed merely to complete the syllabus. The college wallahs and school wallahs just see the degree of MA in English Literature and (or) B.Ed. degree, and employ them for 5K. They are not given sufficient time to prepare the lesson plans, and in their free time they are required to do the clerical tasks. Nowhere it is checked if the teacher has teaching aptitude or not. ~ puneet biseria~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~According to Rubin (1975), every good language learner is1. prepared to take risks.2. seeks maximum use of opportunities to communicate in the L2.3. interacts with speakers of L2 without inhibition.4. uses study techniques to supplement learning.5. actively monitors learning by analysing, categorising and6. storing linguistic features and attending to errors.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~However, the very educated AAJ KI NAARI bombard their kids with her inaccurate English. She butchers English as many times as she opens her mouth. She thinks that it will make her child fluent in English. But the kids who are brought up in such an environment commit silly grammatical mistakes, speak in fake accents as their mothers, and become a laughing stock in front of those whose mothers have made it a point to speak L1 correctly. ~ puneet biseria~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~If you want to learn L2, first of all master your mother tongue. And not only this knowing two or more languages always helps. It enriches a persons linguistic repertoire. It makes him more versatile in communication. The mastery of mother tongue supplements the mastery of the second language. ~ puneet biseria~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Before going into the class, consider the actual purpose of learning English. Are you concerned with real life purposes or the made-up classroom purposes? ~ puneet biseria~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Almost every grammar book has thousands of sentences which are highly regular and well-structured according to the rules of grammar. It has to be. Because, after all it is a book of grammar. However, if you get in touch with those sentences you will get acquainted with it. WOW!!! It is so simple!!! But what is wrong with it? Speaking any language does not mean that you have to be a master of all the grammatical rules. How did you learn your mother tongue? By reading books?Anyone who uses grammar book CANNOT use the type of language which occurs in day-to-day speech. If you keep on practicing the sentence-based grammar, you will never learn rhetoric (the art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing, especially the exploitation of figures of speech and other compositional techniques). Pumping brain with Wren & Martin is therefore a waste of time. Accept it.
