DIGSI 4One Software for all SIPROTEC Protection Relays

DIGSI is a familiar trade name alreadytoday. Originally launched as an MS-DOSsoftware, DIGSI, in its third version, wasdeveloped to become a convenient tool forsetting numerical protection relays underMS Windows. DIGSI 4 now is the logical in-novation for easy-to-use and user-friendlysetting, commissioning and operation of allSIPROTEC protection relays, whatever theversion. With a PC or Notebook, you canset the relays via one of the interfaces andread out and visualize fault data.

Because of its modular design, DIGSI can beused economically depending on the re-spective requirements. The basic versionDIGSI 4 Basis already covers most standardtasks. The basic version can be extendedwith optional components. The basicversion includes:

• Setting parameters and routing

• Human-machine interface

• Commissioning, controlling and testing

• Communication via a direct connection,via PROFIBUS-FMS or other bus systems.

The complete version DIGSI 4 Professionalhas a greater scope than the basic versionwith the following additional functions:

• Display Editor – for creating and modify-ing default and single-line diagramsshown on the display

• SIGRA – for visualizing and evaluatingfault records

• DIGSI Remote – for remote controllingof SIPROTEC 4 relays via a modemconnection

• CFC – for creating new functionality orfor changing the predefined interlockconditions

• IEC 61850 System Configurator – forconfiguring and parameterizingIEC 61850 stations. This tool allows youto manage subnets, network communica-tors and their IP addresses and to connectthe information items of different com-municators.

By the way: If you are already workingwith the engineering tool SICAM plusTOOLS, you can integrate the functionalityof DIGSI 4 seamlessly into the SIMATICManager. You can also use DIGSI 4 in con-junction with SICAM on the station controllevel without any problems.

The CD-ROM contains all components inEnglish, German, Russian, French andSpanish. A “quick start” manual and the ca-ble for direct connection between PC andprotection unit is also delivered.

DIGSI 4 Manager – the start platform

When working with DIGSI 4 Basis, you startout from the DIGSI 4 Manager: with thistool, you can conveniently structure andmanage projects; freely-configurable hierar-chies allow for representing any station to-pology. The protection relays are simplychosen from a catalog and dragged into theproject. Beside the possibility of archivingentire projects, the customer now also canexport individual units, e.g. to a floppy disk:time-consuming search within the file sys-tem is a thing of the past.

By double-clicking a relay, you will see allthe operating features: This gives you directaccess to the parameter setting, I/O configu-ration and – provided that you are online –the commissioning functions and processdata. It corresponds exactly to the menu treeimplemented in the units; this consistencyfacilitates mixed operation, in particularduring commissioning.

Routing and allocation

While in the previous versions the user hadto browse through a series of operational se-quences in order to link one single signal toa relay input or output, the allocation ma-trix is a real innovation in this respect: Allitems of information are listed in one win-dow sorted according to functions and canbe configured very easily and allocated with-out intermediate steps to the desired I/Os,LEDs, buffers and the system interface,which also appear in this window. Example:If you want a signal to be processed by thePLC or to be displayed dynamically in thedefault or single-line diagrams, all you haveto do is making a “check mark” in the cor-responding cell. A wide range of filters plusthe possibility to “expand” or “collapse”rows or columns in a flash ensure perfectoverview.

Parameterizing

In the clearly-structured tabbed dialogboxes, only the settings you really need andwhich are determined by the functionalscope are displayed.Particularly when making the protectionrelay-specific settings, it may be of advan-tage to display the tripping characteristics.With just one mouse click in the settingsdialog box you can visualize the characteris-tics or zone diagrams in a window, depend-ing on the set values. This allows you toobserve conveniently the effects of anychange in the settings.

Test & Diagnosis

The testing and diagnostic functions pro-vide decisive support during the phase ofcommissioning: you can check quickly andeasily the wiring or observe the effect that anindication transmitted via the system inter-face causes in the higher-level station.

The fault indications which are logged inthe relay in the case of a disturbance arelisted in DIGSI and can be saved andprinted out for documentation purposes.

SIGRA for fault analysis

The integrated Comtrade Viewer 4 allowsyou to visualize the corresponding meas-ured variables in curves as a function oftime. However, if you are looking for a con-venient tool which offers a more detailedfault analysis and is able to handle not onlycurves, but also circle diagrams, vector dia-grams and bar charts, then the SIGRA 4 op-tional package is the right choice. On thebasis of the measured values which are reg-istered in the fault record, SIGRA calculatesfurther values such as positive-sequenceimpedances, r.m.s. values, symmetricalcomponents, vectors, etc. Two measuringcursors enable you to measure the faultrecord quickly and conveniently. Otherfault records, e.g. from the remote end of aline, can be added to the existing fault re-cord. A synchronization function makes itpossible to synchronize the fault records to acommon time basis.

CFC programming

The SIPROTEC 4 devices incorporate a PLC(Programmable Logic Controller), in whichfactory-preset standard interlockings are ex-ecuted. If you wish to modify and adaptthem, you use the CFC Editor, which isavailable as a component in DIGSI 4 Profes-sional. Thanks to its fully graphical user in-terface, even users without programmingknowledge are able to make full and flexibleuse of the PLC’s wide range of possibilities.All items of information which have beenconfigured to ”CFC” in the allocation ma-trix before can be ”interconnected” withfunction blocks here. Once installed, theeditor familiar from the SIMATIC worldpresents itself with a SIPROTEC-specificblock library, which does not only providestandard operators such as ”AND”, but alsomore complex functions such as ”TIMER”.A sophisticated consistency check ensureserror-free configuration and reliableoperation of the protection relay functions.
